Someone who speak about that ! Meenakshi Sundareshwat Temple had been damaged by decades of irresponsible, politically-driven and historic/heritage consciousless "renovations" (instead of restoration), which aren't respectful of Agamic rules and Stapathis traditions. The city urban fabric too isn't respected, like every historic centres of Tamil Nadu, Madurai old town had been neglected and damaged by unaccompanied urban growth and real estate dynamics.

Cleaning was definitely done by Mr Alagiri when he was at the helm of affairs, though there was a lot of controversy around him thanks to the guys with him . The momentum last ground. Similarly last year all the water bodies around Madurai were filled with vaigai water and the ground water level has been recharged thanks to the efforts by localMLAs as I learnt from people during my visits to Madurai.

This is biggest lie...we were not poor. We were richer than entire world. They looted us and took everything but couldn't loot our culture, our Religion, tradition and our sanskriti.

It was somewhat clean even upto 1980. There was afunctional sewage water cleaning system in sandhaipettai near Ramnad road: the filtered water was odourless. It was pumped to avuniapuram area to grow grass.! In the 60s if any body cleans the vessel near the public tap provided by the municipality they would be levied with exemplenary fine of 2 rupees. If you step down from the platform and walk on the road, police will fine them. People will not throw the bus ticket on completion of journey; there was provision for dropping the tickets in the front steps meant exclusively for getting down ; people will enter only through the steps at the back . It cost 18 paise for a trip to Theppakulam from central bus stand. Cost of half ticket for children below 12 was 5 paise upto the first stage . - say from bus stand to simmakkal. There was a lot of sand in the river behind Thiagarajar college and one had to Wade through waist deep water to see lord kallazhagar visiting Vandiyur. People were very disciplined and well behaved. Another very special feature was that the seats in the right side of the bus were exclusively reserved for women. Men may occupy an empty seat till the arrival of ladies. Moment a lady comes, menfolk used to get up and vacate: if not the conductor will pull them up; his authority was unquestionable. What a beautiful place as it was then. Now to visit my own place there is some anxiety, fear worry to find people behaving in an unruly manner particularly the autowalas who were an unknown entity till the time of the buses run by TVS.(1972). It is half a century. Everything in shatters and shambles as rightly predicted by my teacher mr K K Ragavachari in1971, probably out of his experience with us then? !
