I thought Maestro was just ok. Wasn't really invested in it. However, I did think Carey was fantastic. When are you going to review Wonka! So curious what you all think as I loved it. Happy New Year!

For those of us who are musicians and are extremely well- versed on everything Bernstein, this film did not meet my expectations. The film could have been called “ Felicia “ … the things that made Bernstein a prodigious genius are not given the exploration worthy of such a phenomenon. His sexual proclivities were well known and , in my opinion, irrelevant. But, this is the theme Cooper decided to explore . His children may be happy that their mother is given the attention she was denied because Bernstein’s light blinded everyone around him. I did not expect a documentary( there are many books and films that emphasize his creative process for those who are seeking that knowledge)… however, there was so little of it in this film and it leads me to ask: 1-who is the audience for this film and, 2-what was Cooper trying to show that audience about this man and his music making” As far as I am concerned , this film was not for me….and I am bitterly disappointed. 😢

Hmm interesting! It definitely took me a long time to warm to Maestro, but I did find that I was moved by their performances in the end. I did care about the relationship and I enjoyed the Mahler conducting scene a lot. But then again I generally enjoy watching conductors rather than finding them icky 😄 Would be interested to hear what you think of 'Priscilla'. I just saw it and thought it was very effective. Very impressed by Cailee Spaeny's performance and the film will stay with me for a while.

Same, I was unsure about the format at first but settled into it and found myself invested in the characters and story by the end.

Happy New Year. I wouldn’t naturally be drawn to this subject matter and for some reason I’m not a huge fan of the lead actor. Fearing the same for Ferrari I’m watching later. Loved Carey in Promising Young Woman.. so different to other characters she’s played xx

Hi everyone, i was holding on watching this review till I had time to watch the movie. I watched it yesterday and I have to say, i really liked it. I usually agree with you guys but on this "Star is Born" vs "Maestro" thing, i'm totally on the other end. I found "A Star is Born" quite lame and cheesy, I felt the drama was shoved down my throat and it didn't trust the viewer to understand what was happening without showing us. But then, "Maestro" does the contrary and that's what I liked. I'm a classical musician, so I absolutely adored the Mahler sequence. It's a one hour and half piece, so 6 minutes was nothing!! I understand not liking Mahler and I won't dispute that, it's a question of taste. But Mahler was the previous Bernstein in that he did both, conducting and composing. The subtitle of this symphony is "resurrection", which makes it very poetic for me... it feels like at the same time he's coming back to life, getting his wife back... his wife looks sick and is about to get diagnosed. Plus I always cringe at people acting playing an instrument or conducting .. and I didn't cringe at this. I totally believed his performance, and Carey Mulligan broke my heart. I didn't find him insufferable. Not anymore than all those men of the time. Leonard Bernstein did great things for music, even while being a white men and acting like one sometimes. He democratized it, brought it to children and the masses. His own music is accessible but not simple. I've played many time with one of his disciples here in Vienna, the first american female conductor to ever be the chief conductor of a major american orchestra (Marin Alsop). There's a documentry about her. wasn't allowed to study conducting for being a woman and so she went to him, Bernstein, at his Tanglewood masterclasses and he took her under his wing. We have to understand that we're only now trying to get out of the "genius culture" in classical music. These men would be called "geniuses" and allowed EVERYTHING. Most of them abused it and were tyrants and monsters. Bernstein, though being a man of his time, is considered one of the nice ones, and this movie made me like him more. He was a bit camp, a bit crazy, but not unkind (which i think we see in the movie) and i find it charming.

I totally agree in relation to the problem with the way the relationship. was portrayed. I didn't believe the relationship there for I wasn't invested enough in it to care when the relationship fell apart. I thought Carrie was amazing in the scene where she received her diagnosis.
