My review of Bradley Cooper's Maestro starring Carey Mulligan, Bradley Cooper, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Michael Urie and Sarah Silverman. The film got its world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival. Here is my review and Oscar Predictions.

Loved this also. I completely bought Bradley Cooper as Bernstein. That Mahler conducting scene was breathtaking. It’s the highlight of the film for me. That scene alone earned an ovation from the audience in my movie theater.

It just occurred to me: if Cillian Murphy doesn’t get BA, I will call flagrant prejudice against the Irish (Best performance last year was Colin Farrell’s.) 😂

I loved A Star Is Born, it was one of my favorite films of 2018. I thought it was a fantastic directorial debut from Bradley Cooper which I felt like he was snubbed of a Best Director nomination and should’ve swept the Best Actor category that year. Ever since then, I’ve been excited to see what he has in store for his next film as a director. This looks like a very interesting followup that I’m glad is getting a lot of good reviews and Oscar buzz. Curious to see if Cooper has a shot at winning Best Actor or a two horse race between him and Cillian Murphy who would be a great Best Actor winner. Can’t wait to watch Maestro on Netflix this December. Great review as always, Luke!

Thanks so much Jack. Cooper is certainly gonna be a contender for Best Actor. I’m actually leaning more towards Coleman Domingo (even though I haven’t seen the film yet) but Cooper is certainly in the “way overdue” category so it could be his year. Time will tell x

Spanish actresses were made to look White, if possible (Raquel Welch). Carey's casting makes sense. They tried to make Bradley look like Bernstein. He had big nose. No controversy.

@LukeHearfield Yes very much so. Myself and most pundits have Bradley winning the Oscar. However Colman, Murphy, and Leo could also win. But I think Bradley will secure the W. Him and Colman are the frontrunners. But Brad has the benefit of his film securing ABL and BTL nominations.

David Openheim was a lifelong friend of Leonard Bernstein, he was even close to the family, there are letters from both of them that were published, I think Cooper focuses on his marriage to Felicia. Bernstein also leaves Felicia for Cothran. Bernstein was homosexual, everyone around him knew it, as did several of Leonard's friends, but at that time, if you wanted to succeed and be respected, you had to have a family, so Ophenheim also got married, a Leonard movie would be great and everyone his loves because he had many.

Will see if BC can best Cillian Murphy. In my view he’ll have to be more than excellent to do that. If voters pick the homeboy over an extraordinary CM, I’m done with the Oscars.

I’m commenting on the win. Sorry. I agree BC will get a nom. We saw Oppenheimer 3x and are now reading the screenplay so you know why our vote to win BA has got to go to CM. 😁

@@LukeHearfield coincidentally I found Oppie and Barbie are STILL running at our AMC! We’re seeing Oppie for the 4th time tomorrow! Not IMAX but we don’t care. Excited to see those performances again. We are presently reading the book; it’s fascinating.

@@LukeHearfieldis a way to honor the film since Japan is most likely sibmitting the boy and the heron. And I think we need a subtle best actor nominee with all the biopic or over the top performances.

Best actor race is going to be a slug fest. Nothing against last years movies these movies in 2023 seem more epic from this movie to Scorsese's film and Oppenheimer.

This was terrible. Why does Hollywood celebrate such jerks as Bernstein? Bad choice by Cooper. I get Bernstein accomplished great things career wise, but addiction and affairs made him a not so great guy personally. I also think Mulligans' character and Bernsteins' real life wife was very weak willed to stay with him. I hope neither wins the Oscar. I would rather have seen Mulligan win for Promising Young Woman, not this poor role.
