Doesn't the rule that the first player can secretly dismiss a role of they choose solve the problem of perfect information? (Yes, the second player has perfect information, but no one else has any reason to trust that second player.)

​@@oppie2363It's not a matter of perfect information, it's a matter of "picking mafia" being the dominant strategy, so most people who try to get sneaky are very quickly sussed out. If you have a bunch of gutsy players, this game works as advertised, but if you have anywhere near a majority of people who play things safe, it's very easy to rule out ~70% of the table immediately

If you are the don and you guess wrong, then as long as someone else doesn't immediately win (like a CIA agent), you can hand them to the player you accused instead of losing. So if you accuse a loyal henchman? you get a do over in an 8 player game.

Aren't the FBI/CIA supposed to solve that problem?

+fatexx544 There are two problems: 1) the FBI/CIA need to pick up the roles near the end for that deception to work (and people like to take them early in my experience). 2) Coming up with a lie requires a lot more brainpower in this game than in other hidden role games, as by the nature of how early they're picked, the "townsfolk" have near perfect information, so contradicting them is quite difficult. You can solve these problems by either playing multiple rounds and giving each role weighted points for victory (so that playing a harder role gets you to the target point total faster), or by having a moderator who can keep information mostly hidden when players ask for roles.

Well, in my experience, the players love the emotion to pick the diamonds and always happens to be a lot of thieves.
