I remember playing this game when I was 13 or 14, I always used to skip cutscenes in most of the games, but Mafia 2’s story hooked me so much that I never skipped cutscenes of any game going forward and that ending…… I still remember that ending and it shocked me so much that I sat still for at least 4 minutes.
My favorite gameplay bit about Mafia II for me is the simulation driving mode, which you didn't mention for some reason. It's SO much fun, especially in faster cars, or cars with wobbly suspension. It's so intuitive and honestly, I think it's the best driving model in a non-racing game. Each car has a different set of physics, different suspesion setups, upgrades matter, tires change the grip level too.
What I really like about this game is that is was set mostly in the 1950s and there aren't a lot of good games set in the 1950s. Another thing I liked was the music, this game introduced me to artists that I still listen to today such as Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, Screamin Jay Hawkins ,and Louis Jordan. Also a fun piece of trivia, the guy who voices the DJ on Delta radio also voices Lee Everett on the Walking Dead.
You can actually sneak Leo Gallante out of the house without Henry knowing using bedsheets. Additionally, there is a secret cutscene between Vito and his sister’s husband if he goes to their apartment before Vito beats him up.
I went to the balcony and got the voice line to use the sheets, but Leo says to get them from "the laundry" and I thought that referred to a laundry room somewhere else in the house. I got caught immediately after looking for the room and thought I failed the mission, lol.
Robbing the gun store is the #1 way to earn at least 2k at the beginning of each chapter. It's so satisfying to walk in, show the business end of your shotgun, and take the money. Speeding off in the most badass way possible. I You could even hit them in the middle of escorting someone to look even more badass
When I first played Mafia 1 I gave up during the racing mission and started the second one (which I've played multiple times now) and the thing I loved the most about those games as a Pre-Teen was how driving was more conscious than GTA, having to not accelerate too much because of the police blew my mind that said, mafia 3 disappointed me so much because for the first time I felt like Mafia was trying to "catch up" to GTA by losing it's more unique vibe
I was trying to do a run of Mafia 1 on classic difficulty...... I swear it took me 2 full days & I could hear, "Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?" I swear the rest of the game was baffling how easy it was after that
@@theoutsiderjess1869 see for me it wasn't about breaking my PS4 it was thinking of war crimes against virtual characters that would make WW1 Canada take notes
1:04:28 That's incorrect, we can actually sneak out of Leo's mansion without being noticed by Henry. It's another one of those untold alternate solutions that you mentioned with the safe early on. There's even an achievement for doing that.
There's also multiple ways you can exit unseen too: the balcony, sneaking behind Henry to get to the kitchen or the front door and stealth kill the guard
yep in order to disable the alarm , you must go to thw other side of the buidling (sneaking behind the entrance guard) and go to the basement , check all the doors until you see the alarm , you disable it and thats it thats some splinter cell stufd right there 😂
Worth noting that when you get to Leo’s house, if you pick the right route, you can lead Leo out of the house without Henry seeing you. You’ll take Leo to the train station and the game continues on as usual.
My experience with mafia 2 was a pretty strange one. Idk why or how, maybe my disc was scratched or something, but like 5ish hours into the story i experienced a glitch where every time i would drive to one specific building it would flag the current mission as completed and mark my next objective to drive home. And the entire rest of the game was pretty much me driving to that street corner and back home to watch a cutscene rinse and repeat until roll credits.
Nono that's normal. The rest of the story from there on out Vito got payed to be a building-sitter. They mention it in a cutscene or something, I'm sure of it.
I used to be so obsessed with this game before it came out, having been a huge fan of the original and the 1950s. I was very active on the forums (I was like 12 without much better to do) and kept a list of all of the cars and what they were based on, updating it with every trailer and gameplay footage. I was naturally disappointed with the end product, nothing could measure up to that level of hype, but it is by no means a bad game. It just hurts see how much was cut, what could have been.
His voice has uncanny similarity to The Salt Factory. Very similar tone and style of narration. Seriously, listen to this and tell me it doesnt sound like the same person: watch?v=uTP-8Vc3cME
Just played through Mafia 2 Definitive Edition, a good game still holds up today, got many quirks and its great how much details for example the vehicles have. The story is good, the world is fine, but after it ends I didnt find much else to really do. The ending and the "DLC" show how much got cut out from the game.
Mafia 2 was one of my favorite games in the series, the game would've been perfect had the devs had enough time to add more side missions as a breakaway from the story but im happy with the way it turned out, the whole Henry being a cop thing kinda reminded me of Troy from Saints row 1, where it reveals that he's a cop at the end but during his missions early on it shows you hints that lead up to that moment.
This is my new favorite channel man. I like your style of critique, it has this "whatever" feeling to it and your content is fun to binge 😂😂😂keep it up
Came to the comments to explain the Daniel situation, but other's have beat me to it. Perhaps you could look into it when doing Mafia 3. Much love. This video and channel deserves more engagement. ❤
Joe's Adventures could have been so good if it followed the main game's mission structure, I actually finished it myself, the rest of the story revolves around Joe making connections with the Falcone family, and it makes the transition between the prison chapter feel less Jarring, but it's absolutely bogged down by the stupid mission structure.
53:32 fun fact Frankie Potts is the protagonist for the promotional site The Story of Frankie Potts which details his investigation into the criminal underworld
Just played this game for the first time this month so the timing couldn’t be more perfect. I don’t always agree with your takes on these games but loved the video regardless. Really a fantastic game.
I think something that was unintentionally really sad was the last words Vito says to Joe. It's very likely Joe's last thoughts were that Vito sold him out to save his own ass.
The ending part is indeed kind of rushed because IIRC the lead writer left and they basically changed his entire vision for last few missions, like Henry was never supposed to be a rat
Something cool I like to do to save money in Mafia 2 also (kinda works as a negative too but I enjoy it), is if you go into a clothes store and aim a weapon at the cashier, you can rob the store. And that includes the clothes there also. You can just quickly equip all the different clothing options in the store after holding up the cashier and leave before the cops show up and provided you don't die, you keep all of those clothes for the rest of the game xDD
Fun fact: There are actually 5 different levels when it comes to police attention. 1) They will check your I.D. This can be triggered by repeatedly bumping into a police officer. 2) They will issue a fine. This can be triggered by speeding or colliding with another vehicle at low speed, as long as nobody is injured or killed. 3) They will arrest you. This is triggered when committing more serious offenses, such as brandishing a weapon in public, armed robbery, or murder of a citizen. 4) They will attempt to destroy you with their service revolvers. This is triggered when you commit a violent offense on a police officer or a violent offense on citizens on serial scale. 5) They will attempt to destroy you with high-powered weaponry. This will be triggered after engaging in a prolonged, serial scale of violent crimes. Unless you are a skilled combatant and/or driver, you are unlikely to escape from this situation. Bonus facts: The police will engage NPCs using these same techniques according to the severity of their crimes. This can prove advantageous to the player, as it may allow you to escape enemies in dire terms. If either the playable character and/or his vehicle is identified or not, especially after a large-scale serial crime, more police officers on-foot and in-vehicle will patrol the streets for a set amount of time. I hope this helped add some information to your video. Cheers.
my guess is that Joe "wasn't part of the deal" because he did not vouch for Henry, therefore he's the one getting to the cathouse, whereas Vito gets exiled to New Bordeaux as the guy who collects the commission fee from the Marcano.
Mafia 2 is one of my favorite games ever I've played it through probably about 10 times I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD DISABLE THAT GOD DAMN ALARM IN THE OPA I legitimately always thought that you were supposed to get caught and shoot your way out
I’ve been sick for close to a week now, and I gotta tell you, your videos have been making lying in bed a lot more tolerable. Thanks for always making awesome content!
i just made a video on mafia 2 a couple days ago! it was my first video and i can easily say it was no where as detailed as yours! great video as always!
The part after the china town mission where u have to drive Joe home and evade the police was way too hard. Police would pull up right before I drop him off
Great video as usual really loced it Also : 1:10:43 on the topic of henry being an agent i have a theory that the events of enter the dragon ( and most of the later chapters ) are planned by the vincis to have a reason to get rid of falcone in fear of losing their grip due to the death of Clemente and most likely just seize control over the entire city for themselves Which expalins why there seem to be very few clues pointing to Henry's betrayal and why Vincis were able to figure it was Joe and Vito were behind the massacre in Chinatown
I always saw the DLCs as a much better replacement for the Free Ride mode that Mafia 1 had, with the addition of expanding the story a bit on Joe's side.
Some good memories associated with this one. I was coming out of a major depressive episode thanks to a new job and was finally flush with cash after YEARS of living paycheck to paycheck and it was pretty awesome to march right into Best Buy and buy a game that had just been released full price. I had a lot of issues with the story (the stuff with Vito dad and Derek comes out of nowhere, to cite one example), the run and gun gameplay was efficient but unremarkable, and the driving could be interminable, but subsequent playthroughs softened my opinion. I liked how the game was unapologetic about how Vito and Joe were low level flunkies and borderline sociopaths and not nearly as sympathetic as the game's previous protagonist, Tommy Angelo. As empty as Empire Bay is, there's something weirdly soothing about going out for the mission of the chapter, doing a massive story mission, and climbing into bed to end the day. I'm currently working through the Definitive edition of II, but I still have my 360 copy of the game. I'm convinced this game had/has a TON of cut content. I do remember one interview at the time with the developers where they admitted story content was cut for pacing reasons- they specifically cited a cut scene where Vito's mother visits him in prison that was just her talking about how worried she was about Vito. I kept wondering if there was other stuff missing- about Frankie, about Vito having a potential love interest, about the other gangs in the city.
20:20 yes the cars have less traction on the snow and as for henry. the first thing that gets on your mind when seeing the guy is that he looks too much of a goody two shoes to be an actual criminal. idk. everything about him screams fed. perhaps they dialed down the amount of clues of him being a g worker to make it less apparent.
“Marty got up that morning and decided to wear the red shirt, little did he know….he fucked up.” Seriously though Marty’s wearing a red shirt???? Coincidence???😊
Cheers, Fuzzy, great review. Is a great game, but never knew about the DLC. Although it sounds as if that isn't a bad thing. Really looking forward to Hit and Run! Man, I loved that game. Take it easy, and see you next time.
Man, I tried playing the definitive edition and I got so many bugs, I had to restart the game in some cases, and in other cases it crashed and made me lose a lot of progress. This was on PS4 btw.
Honestly, after observatory team up i kinda expected that the ending will be where Vito and Joe decide that they had enough of bosses and that they will take out Chu and Galante. Effectively making them a new "big players" in the town....cause...almost everyone else is dead now. Either that or they take out both of them and than leave town for good. I read somewhere that the game originally supposed to have multiple endings. 8 or so IIRC The real ending is kinda anticlimactic...for me at least.
It saddens me how the series went from Mafia and Mafia II to being what Mafia III is. I played the first 2 a couple of years back around when Mafia III came out and loved them even with the fairly poor mission system in the first game. Mafia III basically took the characters and world from the first 2 and ruined the stories and gameplay even though the first 2 games have a ton of jank.
I prefer Mafia II to any GTA game. It's got tighter script, it's more serious, more atmospheric, the protagonist is very likable, plus it doesn't have any irrelevant missions that don't have nothing to do with the larger plot.
I think i used the phone thing once and then forgot but i think the cops are While high fire power and rate but you can survive by driving away fast through streets but i wish you could have challenging chases mafia de has the same feel
Mafia 2 is a game that does nothing great, but everything passably. The story is a shallow series of Mafia tropes and Scorsese references. Still, the characters is where this game shines. Vito, Joe, Leo, Henry. The characters are great, which leaves this story and game a very close place in my heart. And the ending? Madonna Mia. Im glad they kept the more somber ending and didnt do the ending where Vito kills everyone to save Joe. Even though they showed Joe alive in Mafia 3, I think the story works much better with Joe dying at the end.
Can there be like a director's cut of Mafia 3 where they cut the stupid damage factor in half or just get rid of it so we can just play the story missions? That was honestly the only thing that made me hate Mafia III
I think it did, sure the story was good but missions were so repetitive it was just a chore. The whole game from start to finish was exactly the same mission wise.
The definitive editon was the first game i tried to play on my new pc i couldnt get past the initial ride into the city proper with joe it was so buggy with the graphics i went and installed the regular and got like 3/4 of the way through before i got soft locked out of martys apartment and have been slowly etching through jimmy and joes dlcs until i decide do go back through the story again
I do like this game a lot but I after watching this I agree honestly. It’s my favourite Mafia but it’s still very heavily flawed. The whole Mafia franchise to me is heavily flawed. I also think 1 while good is definitely flawed. I will say though I never liked Mafia 3 at all.
this game would have been 10x better if they had MORE cars, collectibles, side missions & achievements like "LA Noir" [likewise, as much as I loved gun & clothes shopping/robbing; the 'lack of options' in Mafia 2 does take away the 'fun/individuality' the game could have capitalised on..] I recon if they included 'rare' suits/weapons/vehicles or gave the player OPTIONS on apartments to rent [making more desirable possessions 'EXPENSIVE' so you're MOTIVATED to grind to afford them] would have made the game more enjoyable.. Even if you still complete the game in 3 hours
