DURING HER FAMOUS 1964 OPERA TOUR IN RIO DE JANEIRO, Magda Olivero managed a tour de force by singing: Margarita in Mefistofele, Tosca, Minnie in La Fanciulla del West and Adriana Lecouvreur, four taxing roles in the space of one month, all under the direction of Maestro Molinari Prandelli.
The aria chosen for the video is from the opening night at Teatro Municipal, “L’altra notte in fondo al mare” from Mefistofele. A musically difficult aria to sing with a challenging exposed high B at the end that should not be screamed but floated as her soul flies away like a agile sparrow.
Magda Olivero relives all the sorrow and drama of mother waiting to be executed after being accused of drowning her baby and killing her mother with such conviction and vocal control that to this day no other soprano has ever attained her level of involvement in the rendering of this very dramatic aria, an aria that never fails to mesmerize the public.
The Brazilian opera lovers were no exception, by the end of the aria the audience was in such a frenzy with feverish applause and never ending screaming of “bis” “bis” and more “bis” that Magda Olivero and the conductor were finally compelled to bis the aria to calm the frantic spectators.
Durante la sua famosa tournée lirica del 1964 a Rio de Janeiro, Magda Olivero ha compiuto un tour de force cantando: Margarita in Mefistofele, Tosca, Minnie in La Fanciulla del West e Adriana Lecouvreur, quattro ruoli impegnativi nell'arco di un mese, tutti sotto la direzione del Maestro Molinari Prandelli.
L'aria scelta per il video è quella della serata inaugurale al Teatro Municipal, "L'altra notte in fondo al mare" da Mefistofele. Un'aria musicalmente difficile da cantare, con un impegnativo si acuto esposto alla fine che non deve essere urlato ma fluttuato mentre la sua anima vola via come un agile passero.
Magda Olivero rivive tutto il dolore e il dramma della madre in attesa di essere giustiziata dopo essere stata accusata di aver annegato il suo bambino e di aver ucciso la madre con una tale convinzione e controllo vocale che a tutt'oggi nessun altro soprano ha mai raggiunto il suo livello di coinvolgimento nella resa di quest'aria così drammatica, un'aria che non manca mai di ipnotizzare il pubblico.
Gli amanti dell'opera brasiliani non hanno fatto eccezione: alla fine dell'aria il pubblico era talmente in delirio per gli applausi febbrili e le urla interminabili di "bis" "bis" e ancora "bis" che Magda Olivero e il direttore d'orchestra sono stati infine costretti a sospendere l'aria per calmare i frenetici spettatori.
