Mage: the Ascension - The Technocracy

It is difficult to know the true nature of the Technocracy, the Technocratic Union who manipulate and control human civilization from within. Are they brave soldiers serving as humanity's first, and last, line of defense against the unknown, or shadowy manipulators who are willing to risk the lives of thousands to see their objective fulfilled?
They are both, and none. In this video we will explore the group who once served as one of the primary antagonists of Mage: the Ascension, but who has since the earlier editions revealed itself to be quite as complex as the Traditions themselves.
Join me as we learn about the Order of Reason, of the Iteration X, the New World Order, the Progenitors, the Syndicate and the Void Engineers. We find out Queen Victoria's involvement with the Order's eventual transformation, and the fate of both the Gabrielites and the Craftmasons, former conventions of the Order of Reason.

I’ve been playing and running Mage for over 20 years. I’m about to start a new group full of people totally unfamiliar with the World of Darkness. I was planning on easing them into it with either Vampire of Werewolf before overwhelming them with Mage, but you somehow made the infodump I can spend a whole game session on take less than an hour. Now I’m just going to sit them down in front of this series and take questions between videos.

The Primogen the thing about Mage is that it’s MEANT to be misinterpreted. Reality is what you perceive it to be, but your perception is not the only reality. I would love to see you go into the lore surrounding The First Cabal. You briefly touched on Heylel Teomim when you said the leader of the Solificati betrayed the early traditions, but I don’t think you named them. Heylel actually had complex motivations and their intent was to actually save the Council of Nine from its own hubris.

I LOVE the Technocracy in concept. I've never played Mage before, but exploring life inside this morally questionable organization and fighting supernatural threats with sci-fi technology sounds like just my kinda fantasy.

Congrats on the Patreon success! I always found the Technocracy interesting. As far as the world of darkness goes, they're the most sympathetic villains. They're controlling and severe, but at least they're trying to keep reality from unraveling! I need reality. It's where I keep all my stuff.

I cheated the timeline slightly in my Victorian chronicle by having the Electrodyne Engineers (Sons of Ether) defect in the late 19th Century as opposed to the early 20th. I like them cuz of their major Steampunk vibe.

looking foreward to more mage lore. im a storyteller / game master for curently a vampire game but one of the truly big selling points of world of darknes is its layers and diverse groups. thise videos help me in portraying that kind of world

Technocracy only has humanities best intrest in mind. Don't forget that the other supernaturals are fallible. The Void Mages convention is more wild than most of the traditions. I totally understand you on the part of Technocracy in bed with Pentex though.

At least one scenario in Ascension(the end times book for Mage the Ascension), the people who stared the Technocracy knew they were causing apathy in sleepers, so the argument for “We don’t know if it is true” was actually said, in one place, to be false.

I honestly think they should split Mystics and Technocrats up and give them their own chronicles. I always play as a Technocrat anyway and would love a game focusing on just them. Considering they've become the Good Guys since Guide to the Technocracy released in 1999, I'd say they deserve it. Their main Enemies can be Threat Null.

So... I'm a little confused. Do the Technocracy believe or don't they believe in magic? It sounds like they understand that there are extra dimensionsal and supernatural threats and the concept of consensus, so... How do they not believe in magic if that's the case? If they're trying to stamp out magic they'd have to believe in it to stamp out.

Hey Primogen and friends of the channel, I have a question I can’t seem to find a answer to in the text. If the Technocracy doesn’t believe in magic, how do they explain it when a Tradition mage performs magic?

A good and important question. To answer it though you have to account for a few things outside but related to it. In the world Mage magic, Mage magic, operates on a principle of basic forcing your own will on reality via a number of avenues (spheres.) The more people who "agree" with your view on reality (awakened and unawakened) the more "real" your view is. Because of this, especially in the modern nights, magic in the Mage setting is less about throwing fireballs down Main Street or regrowing severed limbs and more about making...coincidences happen. Things that let you impose your will on reality without seeming so far fetched or fantastical paradox snaps back at you. In the case of the Technocracy, they take the "any sufficiently advanced technology would appear to be magic" saying to its logical and extreme conclusion. You don't know exactly how a laptop really works. But if you could explain it away by saying it's based on the flow of electrons filtered through silicon chips and charged particles on a screen then it wouldn't matter at all HOW it works. Just that you can run your spreadsheet programs on it. Thus their "reality" is enforced by millions of PC users even if the end result would, to an outsider, look like "magic." So when dealing with the Traditions or other supernaturals the Technocracy would generally take the mental approach that anything supernatural they encounter is just "technology" they haven't figured out how to work or reliably reproduce yet. Thus the Mage who does throw a fireball at them must be using some kind of wrist mounted flame thrower or produce a combustible gas emission or something like that. Not actually conjuring flames from the infernal realms or such. Similarly, werecreatures are just extreme genetic mutations or cryptids, vampires the result of an exotic blood diseases, ghosts, spirits, and demons are extradimensional non-corporal entities, etc... This is also why fighting them is tough because around the unawakened their paradigm of science and reason explaining all makes it harder for Tradition Mages to impose their individual will to get the effects they want, as "reality" now fights back twice as hard when they try to bend or break it. Hope that answers the question.

after reading up on the technocracy i just don't see any reason to play mages. technocracy is just more interesting with more plot hooks to get the players to do stuff + technomages relying heavily on their foci adds a little more balance since they can't just summon fire or lightning but need devices to do stuff

Let me tell you all a little story, something which happened in my country some time ago, there is this woman who kept candidating for presidency of the nation, he always reaches second position in the results despite her being prosecuted for being the leader of a criminal organization and having show to be a petty loser, you may ask, why? Why would people still vote for her despite her lack of charisma and the media taking on her? Well, you see, her father, who is now in prison due corruption and indirect association with murder was president before her, and he did something no other leader of my country did to those who lived in the country. He expanded the electric grid to their regions and made easy access for everyone to have telephones. You see? What you all westerners take for granted, to press a button to cast light, to keep your food fresh for days on without fearing poisoning you, to have a warm shower, to make your voice travel instantly to another place, to know the world. Take away that, imagine yourself living in a little house filled with darkness barely held back by little candles, your hindbrain always fearful someone, or something, may come to you and you won't even have a chance to call for help, to be ignorant others have broken the law of the jungle and there is a promise of a tomorrow. When the alternative is the terror of the night, people will vow down even to corrupt and greed masters to save them.

I think they are the real world inspiration or analogue, I grew up in a catholic country and when you understand the biblical view (which condemns the use of magic by the way so it is assumed to exist in reality) all the world of darkness lore videos seem very true to life, just rebranded and described from a certain angle, the truth is stranger than fiction after all lots of common words between media terms and magic terms, you broadCast your words instead of casting with incantations but the result can be the same, you can make people respond to your words and your will has been made manifest in the world

@@grandsome1 well it’s the word cast, so I think it fits in my description, for example you broadcast a perhaps intentionally false disaster, you have sown the seeds of fear, so that matches the definition, and the fruits of that broadcast are the reactions of the populace seeded by it, same for propaganda, like in ww1 posters of Germans bayoneting nuns, you’ve shown the seeds of hatred in anyone who has a strong emotional reaction to seeing that poster and believes it
