@@wendydebois1685 It's not something you can prevent, it's something you can only treat which is what he's doing. The only possible way to stop this from happening is to kill every fly that goes near the sheep, if you have an idea as to how that might be done then by all means enlighten us.

For those who want to criticize, but can’t be bothered to Google… This happens FAST. On live sheep…The Blowfly lays eggs on soiled fleeces (diarrhea, blood from injury, etc.) The eggs hatch into first stage larvae within about 12 hours. These larvae feed on skin and faecal material, becoming mature third-stage maggots in as little as 3 days if temperature and humidity are at optimum levels. Third-stage maggots then drop to the ground and pupate; mature flies emerge after 3 to 7 days during warm months, but if it’s getting cool, pupae can live in the soil and emerge as soil temperatures rise during the spring. This can be the start of a new fly strike season.

A. He was gone for about a week and it only takes about 2 days to become completely infested. Terrible creatures flies. B. He left his farm in capable hands so this isn't on him or his caretaker. The cow went and had her calf in the wood area away from the herd and hid the place she delivered. The farmer had to go search for the calf and get meds and fly repellant to protect the little guy. Also we have fly strike here in the US as well. It's a farming problem so few people know about it. Most farmers take care of those things themselves and no vet is involved unless it is a major infestation and help is needed.

Did you look at the different ages of the maggots? 2 days my ass. I'm starting to think this guy let's the infection sit for more dramatic removal videos. I'm a vet, and an infection like this one is AT LEAST 1 month. 2 to 3 week old maggots...there's NO reason for this ither than neglect.

Thanks for your question. Flystrike is very hard to spot early, especially from a distance. During the worst parts of flystrike season we drive through the sheep every day or every few days, checking on their condition and health. As soon as we notice one with flystrike we treat them right away. Sometimes you can spot a sheep itching or shaking their back, that can indicate that they have flystrike. The situation progresses very quickly, going from perfectly healthy to a big problem in only a few days.

@FarmWithMeNZ
@FarmWithMeNZ 2 года назад
There was no injury to this lamb before it was accosted by blowflies. Flystrike occurs when blowflies lay eggs in warm, moist areas on a sheep and these eggs hatch into maggots, which then invade the living sheep. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. Flystrike can be a significant problem for New Zealand sheep farmers. It is estimated that 2-10% of the national flock is affected by flystrike annually and the subsequent economic effects can be measured in the millions of dollars. Farmers in New Zealand spend in excess of $15 million annually on treatments.

This sheep is a duel breed, for both meat and wool. The wool is quite course so not great for garments, but is often used for carpets. In our flock of about 3000 sheep, only 30 - 40 were affected by flystrike this year. We have a regular schedule for applying a fly deterrent and keep a sharp eye out for any we think have been affected. Our farm is too large to check on each sheep everyday. They do not come to us for daily feeding, they are grazing on our 1000 acre farm. Thanks for your comment.

If you have ever had to remove maggots from a live otherwise healthy animal it's something you will NEVER FIRGET...use fly traps if you can...sticky tapes...spray etc but the best defense is watch your animals....
