Back when I started in odyssey a friend had all these in real cards and we played a lot of games against them using my standard deck. Survival always blew my mind with how powerful it was. He had an answer for everything. Never won against that one or any of them but it really drew me in with how someone could construct decks like that that could basically blank out everything. The combo decks from back then while they weren’t fast by today’s standards were very interesting to watch and gave you a sense of false hope that you could pull out - until the 7/7 hit the board and even if you could remove it just came back.

That recurring nightmare deck is beautiful. It makes me sad that the power creep is so bad that this deck is basically unplayable now. All of the OP cards are taking the fun and cool simple interaction away. Now a 1 mana drop has a whole book worth of text. No more vanilla creatures being created. Mtg is more confusing than ever because they just have to keep coming up with wacky mechanics that are essentially a reskinned version of older mechanics. This was really enjoyable game play to watch.

Another rule that was changed just before these championship decks were made - there used to be a step during combat where you could activate instant speed effects after combat damage was assigned but before damage was delt. That meant Mog Fanatic could kill 2 toughness creatures, or 2 for 1 with two 1 toughness creatures and is a major reason why the combat rules were changed.

Obviously I'm biased because this is the Magic I learned to play growing up: I remember buying the French equivalent of Duelist magazine to understand how the stack worked and I'm still conditioned to think about creatures' P/T & CMC as basically "needing to be balanced" (and the way that was done back then looks insane now, 11 year old me was stoked to have Balduvian Horde in his deck lol). Oh man ball lightning that takes me back. I had a red green deck for a while already, and then lost to a deck using ball lightning. So I decided to build a deck around it. ASlso green red. The idea was to clear the board with fireball, bold and chain lightning to clear thbe way and then play this beauty. It got supported by giant growth and berserk. Just 1 giant growth and 1 berserk could deliver 18 damage, which back then was soo much better then now. Today doing 18 damage in 1 tuirn is pretty common, but back then very few decks could deliver such a blow, and this dexck could do it as early as turn 3, in a time where magic was MUCH slower and most games went well beyond turn 5

I am very glad u cover classic mtg. The footage is mostly lost so it is nice to see what it was like back then. The origins of anything are usually very interesting.

My favorite Mono red deck I played was my friends Goblins to the face deck. It was back in 2015 or so, there was nothing too special about the deck, but I was still able to place at the first tournament I entered. It left a long love for TCG, collecting, and learning about the game.

It was a trip down memory lane :) Those decks were the first one we bought with some friends in highschool to start playing the game properly. Such a treat to see them in action again! If you have a chance to do another video, the white weenie was really good too and fun to play, lot of shadow creatures with the soltari tribe, a "combo" with Cataclysm and Empyrial Armor And it's an aggressive deck to bring back Frank :P

@Barraind.Faylestar
@Barraind.Faylestar 10 месяцев назад
@@Jack-uh2db There was, but not in red. Other red options at 2 cost (they had something like 15 1/1's for 1) were: 2/1 dwarf that got +0/+2 if blocked by an orc (and the only orc in the format couldnt block it). 2/1 mountainwalker. 1/2 with firebreathing if blocked. 1/1 that got +3/+0 if blocked. 1/1 Pinger that also pinged you. 2/2 Goblin that got -1/-1 if blocked or blocking. 1/1 Goblin Recruiter (who saw play in the goblin version of the deck, but in sleigh was only tutoring itself or a Fanatic) 1/2 who could tap to shock a player with more Life. 1/1 sliver. 1/1 who did retributive damage. 3/3 that got -1/-1 for every other creature on the table. 1/1 with firebreathing that died if it firebreathed 2 walls Red Had some fantastic 1 drops, some solid 3 drops, and its 2 drops were terrible and/or good sideboard cards. Ironclaw Orcs was the only red 2 power 2drop that didnt die to something looking at it funny. Outside of Walls, with green having both Blossoms and Roots, Black and White had the best suite of 2drops, with Whites options being head and shoulders above the rest. White had something like 5 2/2's with upside and 7 1/2 or 2/1's with upside (white also had exactly nothing in that format besides turn 2 creature, turn 3 empyreal armor, turn 4 cataclysm and hope it had more gas than you did)

@Barraind.Faylestar
@Barraind.Faylestar 10 месяцев назад
@@DarthSmirnoff If we had access to creatures that were even as good as the stuff thats "cute but unplayable" these days, it would have been like every day was christmas for creature based decks. This was the era where Kird Ape was not reprinted in 4th edition because it was considered oppressively overpowered for type 2. Blue/White could field a deck where "exile an attacking creature" was straight up their worst card (why wait until they attacked ?!!@!?@), but a vanilla 1/1 for 1 red that required a forest in play to be a 2/3 was overly good. I'm glad somewhere along the line they realized if you have seven hundred things that say pay 1-3, kill a creature, creatures should probably be actually good at every mana cost.

I remember buying the Duelist issue that showcased the Sligh deck and outlined the mana curve. It changed my life. I reread it dozens of times. There was an offhand sentence about altering the mana curve for other decks and it was just as revolutionary as you say
