Roger! Sir, it is absolutely thrilling to see you play this, up close. You're one of my favorite players, ever! Thank you, for your generosity in sharing this.
I guess I was 15, or had just turned 16 when this classic-to-be was released. 'Magic Man,' 'Crazy on You,' and other Heart hits are embedded in my soul.
Oh my goodness Roger, thank you a million times over for not only demonstrating, but for your artistic explanation of how you approached the lead guitar process. This has always been one of my top 5 guitar solos, because it is ridiculously tasty!!! Thank you sir... also grew up in Kent WA just outside Seattle and Heart was our band!
I remember being in high school driving down the road in probably 1976 when DREAMBOAT ANNIE was all over the radio and my father is a jazz piano player and he wanted me to play piano but I gravitated toward the guitar. Spending many nights 10 hours a day playing - but I'm left-handed and they spun me around so I'm sure that cost me some years. But the first time I heard MAGIC MAN I had to pull the car over! LOL! Which is trippy as hell because I was telling my buddy to shut up and of course there was no cell phones or any of this where I can see that you had changed the tuning of the guitar but it's - well let's put it this way my brother! MY father was born in Norway and I saw on one of your videos, I'm on your subscription trip. So I thought that was funny but I grew up with count Basie and all this Jazz and I was into everything from across the pond - CREAM and all I have to tell you man is that there is not one dude who plays guitar on the face of the Earth that sounds like you ever! And we play the show up there years ago and it seems to me that maybe you're still living up in the Pacific Northwest and that was a one-night gig and then we were back in the bus and heading back down to San Francisco which is where we were based out of it at the time. But anyway the intro the solos everything was just so astounding to me and like I said oh, there's not a soul in the world that sounds like you bro so it's 2 everybody can't pull it together because you'll sell out everything that you book but maybe it's not meant to happen but this first four records especially MISTRAL WIND just incredible guitar playing man and like I said you don't sound like ANYBODY so it was a joy to watch this, laughing when you said you broke ten strings I totally get that! Bless your heart and thank you for all the great music and maybe I'll make a pilgrimage up there one of these days and see if I can grab a lesson from you and spend some time because I'm 60 years old and you're still one of my heroes brother! I noticed you're playing with your fingers now and that was an incredible version at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you were just on fire! IMHO... ☮️✌️🛐💖🤷🏼♀️ PEACE AND LOVE TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY BROTHER 💕💯🙏💖 ( BTW - I don't remember where, but I did see the original lineup in 78 and you pretty much blew the top of my head off on that tour! For whatever it's worth?)
Brilliant. I’m an artist in the conventional sense I guess of working on canvas and I also write poetry. I always try to telepathically transmit my feelings and emotions in my art. I knew Roger was doing this but wouldn’t be able to explain it but now I understand why his playing affects me so much. He’s speaking with his guitar in feelings not just sound. So glad I found this video! Thanks, Roger! PS: Prince and Randy Rhoads also played with this approach.
i first saw heart live in 1985 even now in 2019 i still profess it was still the most stupendous thing i ever experienced. i heard magic man in 1976 too but it was after hearing it live in 1985 that i came to love the song.
I always wondered why the awesome lick didn't fit into some normal pentatonic scale pattern. now I know, it does- in an alternate universe. Thank you kindly Roger.
As a guitarist I understand every word Roger is saying but he's not the most eloquent guy out there when it comes to the spoken word but he's quite eloquent and poetic as hell with a guitar in his hands and when he's playing you know exactly what he's saying.
Yeah. I recall, in my youth sharing riffs telepathically . . . and Rog's 'out of body' experience . . . the first time I picked up a gold-top Les Paul the floor fell away from under me . . . freaked me out.
After you left Heart I heard Ann talking about how difficult it was to find a really really good rock guitarist. They were very well aware of how fantastic you are.
Heart was my 2nd concert EVER in late 70's at Providence Civic Center. First concert was Fleetwood Mac, and Kenny Loggins, (Kenny opened) at same local! WOW! Now 70, and it's like yesterday! Thanx Rog, I've missed you, and your talent immensely, and I'd almost be willing to betcha that the "Girls" do as well??? ONE MORE TIME!!!
The Les Paul Roger originally used for Magic I believe was either 55 Goldtop or a 68/69 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop. I don’t think it’s a 1965 because Gibson didn’t make the Les Paul between 1961-1967.
Rog, are you holdin' out on us?? No matter how I try the same fingerings in your leads, (even with the raised 1st, and 2nd strings), it just don't work unless the 5th, and 6th strings are dropped down a full step, to G, and D, respectively, and then it really "KICKS"!!! Am I the only one catchin' this?
There's only 1 part that where the 5th and 6th strings are played in the main solo and that's before the clean solo and it's easily playable in standard, but maybe you're talking about a different part, I'm not sure.
He said FIFTY FIVE. I believe the Les Paul's were from '52-''60!! Nothing to 'Look into' there, Rog was RIGHT ON! Hey Rog, hang on to that Gold Top, cause they're goin' for over $20,000! And because it's YOURS, would go for a "tad" more than that, Ha! God bless BeaTlegeo
