1:43 This method could totally work using a multi colored striped fabric. You would need to use 4 identical fussy cut pieces (instead of just 2) and line them up really well before cutting into your 4 quadrants. Then just keep all the layers from each quadrant matched up. You'd end up with 2 of the square looking blocks and 2 of the plus sign looking blocks. As long as you keep the lines properly matched up, each block would look perfectly aligned while being unique from each other. If you shift the initial fussy cut over by just 1 stripe you can change the look of all 4 blocks. For instance, if you make your initial cut for the first 4 blocks on the fabric shown here from, say, the left edge of a pink strip to the left edge of the next occurring pink stripe, then make the initial cut for the next 4 blocks from the right of a red stripe to the right of the next occurring red stripe, etc. by using this method you could shift the fabric shown here 20 different times (10 shifts per each color stripe and 10 shifts per the white stripes in between). 20 shifts times 4 blocks per shift would yield 80 unique blocks. That's a lot of variety from the yardage of just one fabric 😉

I made this quilt following your instructions and it turned out great! One pair of blocks was mis-cut and ended up way too small. I just decided to border them with more striped fabric and made it work. No one noticed. :)

Great tutorial. One tip that might help with stitching all those bias edges is to heavily starch the fabric. I also think if you pinned in the opposite direction it might help. Pin perpendicular to the stitch line with your pin heads hanging off the fabric. It’s easier to pull the pins out as you stitch, therefore your fabric may shift less.

I haven’t made this but I wanna let you know I loveee all your videos. I just started quilting at 34; I grew up with my moms stuff all over the kitchen and getting yelled at for using her scissors on paper & I now know why 😂 I’m making the fat quarter plaid it’s the first quilt I’ve made that I did cutting and sewing. I’m not on my second of the same pattern for one for my mother! I can’t wait to try more I’ve downloaded from your website & there’s some I wanna buy. You do an amazing job coming up with these! I do wanna ask I’m looking to free motion I got a small brother at Joann fabrics and realized it was 200$ wasted and got a big memory craft 6650 which I love and everything I need is gonna be here tomorrow; I’ve watched your videos on doing free motion but I feel like you need the ability to draw and I’m not a good artist like that. Some tips maybe on how I can become better at drawing for my free motion technique

On the second diagonal cut, just use the other edge of the ruler. Much easier to do from your same position.

Something I do to help my fabrics from distorting on a bias edge is I use a lot of sizing on the whole piece of before I even cut. When doing this I take care to press and not 'iron' to keep the lines etc. straight. After cutting and pinning it really helps the bias edges stabilize when sewing them together. Long story short ... it makes the fabric act more like a sheet of paper. I hope this helps someone ... happy quilting!

Yes!! Adding something to provide some structure to fabric will help so much!!

I know this tutorial is a year old but I still had to comment. Usually I give stripes a wide berth, because they affect my eyes (I'm prone to migraines), but this pattern is different somehow. I was wondering if you could make the striped blocks a feature by using them as the centre square in a nine patch block? Or use wide sashing between the blocks? Thank you for this tutorial it was very interesting and informative.

Sorry if I missed it in video... What size blocks did you cut to make the quilt in the thumbnail? Looks smaller than version made in tutorial. Absolutely 💜 this pattern & appreciate you sharing it!

Really love this blog! I've never made a quilt using it. But I have taken some straight fabric and tried to make the block. Wondering if you can do a tutorial on how to figure out binding, backing and borders the math for that?
@TinyOrchardQuilts
@TinyOrchardQuilts 3 года назад
Sure! I'll add that to my list. I already had one planned for adding borders to any quilt but I think a general finishing math type video would be great :)

I’d like smaller blocks, because I lack the skills necessary to trim such big blocks with a straight ruler. How big are the blocks in the completed quilt? I have several yards of that fabric in 4 different colors. Please advise!

Interesting that the box in a box block looks smaller than the "exploding plus sign " block. More optical illustrations!

So....because you are using the bias to your advantage, we wouldn’t use heavy starch. Am I correct with this assumption?
@TinyOrchardQuilts
@TinyOrchardQuilts 4 года назад
I used a light starch on this as I usually do. You can definitely take advantage of the bias for these blocks but it doesn’t take much at all, so I wouldn’t be afraid of overstarching.
@annas.r.p.5835

I noticed you do a little back stitch when you start your seams .... I always use to get yelled at when I did that in a quilt class .... Is that habit or intentional?
@TinyOrchardQuilts
@TinyOrchardQuilts 2 года назад
A mix of both, I think. I always try to do a back stitch when I’m sewing seams I know will end up on the edge of a quilt-like when I’m piecing rows and don’t intend to add a border. Other times it’s just a habit. There’s nothing wrong with backstitching in my opinion, but it isn’t necessary if you are going to sew that seam to another piece.
