Hey folks, as many attentive students have already pointed out (good catch, by the way!) Chandra's goggles are not literally the same pair Jaya wears, and are in fact a different pair (Jaya's have slits). While, YES, this is just a comedy skit, I still like to be as technically correct as I can on details such as this (it's the best kind of correct, after all) and so I apologize for this error.
Quite frankly, I probably could have landed a few good jokes about the fact Chandra is ALSO wearing goggles, just like Jaya, but ah well. I hope these comedy skits are taken in the spirit they were written and produced, which is one of gentle good humor. The jokes are not meant to ridicule so much as gently tease with the intent of eventual improvement.

The flavor text of Chandra's Oath makes me love how chill she is most of the time and how awesome it would be to have a sitcom with her and Jace.

Chandra doesn't have Jaya's goggles, they're her father's. It's right there on the art for Pia and Kiran Nalaar. Look closely at Chandra's goggles and Jaya's goggles, and you'll see the difference. Chandra's goggles are gold and have red-tinted lenses, while Jaya's are gold, but with slits over the eyes. Stealing something from someone she admires doesn't seem like something Chandra would do (and don't bring up Ramaz, a Planeswalker she stole a map from. She hated that guy.). Also, I think the Acolytes of Keral Keep would notice if their most prized possession was stolen by Chandra. All of this aside though, Chandra does share many similarities with Jaya. However, Chandra is considerably younger than Jaya, so if they replaced Chandra with Jaya, I doubt Jaya would make the same mistakes that Chandra did, like at the Eye of Ugin. Anyway, these are just my thoughts, and I really liked the video.

Pyromancer's Goggles' flavor text even reads, "'l hope to meet Jaya Ballard someday. I think we'd get along.' -Chandra Nalaar" And with that in mind, she stole the goggles! Because when you think you'd get along with someone, you steal their stuff, right?

+martypunker obviously, she stole the goggles because then jaya will come looking for her goggles and find chandra and then they can be best friends. And with the genius of chandra she never took into account that jaya was dead, because of time spiral block, so maybe she is still alive, even though she died around Ice Age block. But Jaya did have the ability to summon Freyalise, so maybe she is a red pyromancer who is not a planeswalker but has a planeswalker as a slave.

You know what red card I want to see? Warmth. Enchantment. (1)(R). At the beginning of each upkeep, all players gain 1 life. I feel like that card could capture the more positives emotions, cards that red are sorely lacking.

+Vlad1m4ra The Theros card Opaline Unicorn, while a colorless creature, has flavor text that mentions the passion and love that the Red god Purphoros held for the Green god Nylea. This tells me that Wizards can certainly make non-rage red cards, but for some reason they choose not to.

Actually, those aren't Jaya's goggles. Yeah, they have that card in Origins, but that one is not meant to be Chandra's. Ballard's goggles are gold with the slits in them and are on that card. Chandra's are red tinted and from her father, as seen in the card for her parents. Another note, one story mentions how Chandra feels pressured to live up Jaya's reputation. Although that hasn't come through in a card, she is also struggling to fill the shoes of an impressive pyromancer. That's something Jaya didn't have to deal with: learning in Jaya's shadow. Of course, none of these are good enough to actually discredit the video's point.

Chandra's goggles are not literally stolen though. Was kind of disappointed to not see Chandra mention that. They're her father's goggles. They don't even look that similar. Jaya's have metal "lenses" with slits across them. Chandra's have translucent red lenses. And they're on her father's head in every single piece of art that he's in.

This is hilarious, hours before this was uploaded I was re-reading the history of Chandra, what a coincidence! This was hilarious and while it is true, I still love Chandra and her backstory (you know..the one where she started the village fire, not the retcon xP). I feel she has great potential and loved having her encounter Sarkhan on Zendikar, however it be amazing if her character took a turn towards white mana characteristics. Using her Fire as warmth, kindle for the weak, oppressed and meek. Utilizing her powers in a controlled state for good and not uncontrolled rage. Chandra should def mature and grow as she gets older, taking on humble qualities. These are fantastic Professor! Obviously it looks like Jace and Gideon will be lined up next, but my goodness I'd love if you covered even more Planeswalkers! Karn, Sarkhan, Garruk, Liliana, Tezzeret and Xenagos(is he officially stated as dead by wotc?) would be extremely amusing xD! I know these take a lot of prep and work, but many of us greatly appreciate these type of videos. I find your lore and character based videos and interests are just as enjoyable as your deck and accessory ones. Cheer Professor!

Uhh, those glasses are her dad's? Kiran Nalaar? This is basically her only heritage, since he died in her arms while being pursued by consules in Kaladesh? He also designed her armor, especially the steampunky thing on her arm, to direct and control her pyromancy? I think the Professor skipped the class on Magic Origins.

I did not expect to enjoy this episode, but it has surpassed my expectations. I would enjoy seeing a host of new episodes like this one, where you can air out some of your grievances with character design in Magic. Our favorite card game is a lot of fun, but it is far from perfect.

WOO! I think that Nicol Bolas as the Small POP! figure would be an amazing Teacher/Advisor for career counseling. Maybe give some Planeswalkers a little "advice", but every time he does the Professor pops in with a "Actually I think they would be better suited to etc..." and hilarity would ensue.

It's funny that wizards has already acknowledged this, to the extent of comparing her to jaya and actully making it cannon that chandra is under jaya's shadow, now that they have accepted this flaw, i really really hope that now she starts making her own way to distant herself from jaya (and hope one day she'll ever get a good planeswalker card).

I always felt a connection to Chandras impulsiveness, like she shares my ADD maybe. Instead of 'Chandras Rage' it should be: 'Chandras inability to sit still' or 'Chandras trouble focusing'

Idea for wizard's: you retconned her original story so that Chandra's parents are Artificers, why not have her dabble in machines and artifacts? She can still use fire and stuff, but what if she used her flames to Forge unique and powerful artifacts as well? She could channel her rage through the creative outlet of crafting thopters and such like her parents, which also might give her a connection to her past, and as a way of keeping her parents memories alive. Reading the tiny bit of flavour text for the Mono Red commanders precon, makes me wonder why they don't jus focus on Darretti or felden instead. A goblin who is driven to become the best Artificer, and who escapes his his terrible fate by igniting his spark, which allows him to further pursue his passion, or a man who tries to resurrect his dead wife, but instead finds solace in working on machines all seem more interesting. Why not either focus on then, or perhaps have Chandra adapt traits like that for inspiration, as those ideals are also on colour for Red. Anyways excellent video professor, and thanks for the ideas to help flesh out my own writing.

+knate44 ya the lorywn 6 are some of the most bland and shallow characters. There is almost nothing of note in any of them and by that I mean chandra and jace. kill them both off. Then we could get a good pure red planeswalker in standard and modern and we could get a blue planeswalker that everyone wants to play that is not jace. Literally chandra has to many non-playable versions of her, most of them have never seen serious play while every printing of jace has seen serious play.

+cazuke101 I never said she had to be GOOD at artificing. :P. In fact I could see her being passionate at her something she isn't great at being even more awesome. What could be more red than following what you love even if you aren't great at it? Like what if you had to sac the thopter at the end of the turn or have it deal 1 damage to you whenever it attacks or something like that.

Jaya is a cranky old planeswalker from before the mending who can be wise while Chandra is young, reckless and inexperienced. Chandra is also lesbian while Jaya is straight and Jaya is Chandra's mentor and a diplomat who has taught many groups of monks and mercenaries across the multiverse.

Jaya also doesn't where armour and is from Dominaria, all her family are dead while Chandra lives on Kaladesh with her mother. Chandra has friends while Jaya doesnt.

She is a abbot at a fire temple that pays respect to Jaya Ballard. I think the spiritual side of Chandra is neglected. She has a lot of available characteristics to explore. Obviously this video is comicly overstated. And I used to agree with you.

Great video Professor! Keep'em coming! Just a nitpick: Chandra's Goggles are her father's, Jaya's Goggles are the Pyromancer's Goggles from the card. While Jaya's hold actual magic, Chandra's are just regular old goggles.

This series is spectacular and brings me laughs whenever I see it; are we going to get more for other planeswalkers? The costuming would be pretty hard but after your tweets about Ob Nixilis some discussion about his narrative could make for some great comedy

I believe her main difference is "loyalty". Red has this thing, once they've decided who their friends are they'll help those people with little regard for anyone else. For Chandra, this was casting aside the responsibility of being Abbot so she could help the effort in Zendikar. Wizards is changing how they're handling the character issue, the Gatewatch being the new protagonists in every set for the foreseeable future, so hopefully we'll see some changes (or additions) to their characters over that time.

yeah she could be a very deep character she could go to Jace and Liliana and say "young love is a flame; very pretty, often very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep burning, unquenchable." -Henry Ward Beecher and yes i know Liliana is really really old.
