I like to imagine Kytheon as one of those pushover sitcom characters: *Bant Knight:* I am Sir Gwain, The One Eared, what pray tell is your name? *Kytheon:* Kytheon, noble knight. *Bant Knight:* Gideon eh, a strong name. *Kytheon:* Er, no, I- *Bant Knight:* VILLAGERS, HERE ME! WE HAVE A GUEST WHO HAS TRAVELED FAR, GIDEON OF; where did you say you were from? *Kytheon:* Theros, but- *Bant Knight:* FAROS! TELL ALL OF HIS COMING!
Nonsense, it would be redundant. The Professer IS Tibalt, he can scarcely talk to himself. Well, I mean, he could. I suppose there's nothing stopping him from doing a video from both sides of the desk.
Doesn't Gidds' turn into a creature? Couldn't you just copy him as a creature and then have a defender for himself. I smell a doubling season in that deck.
Sun Tzu: "If you know your enemy and yourself, you need not fear the outcome of a thousand battles." Kennedy: "We do these things NOT because they are easy, but because they are difficult." Gideon: "Eh."
Gideon is the "bro-iest" of the planeswalkers. "I just did a killer sesh pumping the lats brah. Let's grab a bite and go smash some Eldrazi with the other super friends" *pops collar to activate planeswalk*
@@sarahmiller4980 If I remember correctly, it is mostly canon. Liliana calls him beefslab in a short story about the Gatewatch from back after Battle for Zendikar came out.
"What if someone mispronounces Gideon?" I subscribed to this channel for your analysis, Professor, but I'm finding your wit and humor to be quickly catching up to your other virtues.
Gideon's struggle was that he kept doing too much. I liked the lore articles that showed him going back and forth between Zendikar and Ravnica, fighting the Eldrazi and helping the Boros without a break between the two. He only rested because Jace made him
Just discovered this gem of a channel and instantly subscribed. Love all of the creative videos, and the professor is a fantastic character. Can't wait to see more.
Nissa was pretty high, Chandra a rebel without identity, Liliana solves everything with bloodshed, and Gideon dont give a crap about anything. Such a nice group...
I love this and the series. I'd also like to be the [probably 300th] person to note that it was a Woman that Kytheon/Gideon first met on Bant. There are always going to be slip ups so it happens, it was just funny that it was a slip up that was mentioned like 3 times in a row.
I didn't think I could like anything more than I liked your deck techs and product reviews, but this is quickly becoming my favorite thing you do professor. Keep up the awesome content!
Kyth...I mean Gideon is a simple man, with simple motivations. Good is good. Evil is bad. Fighting is fun. Talking is sometimes necessary, but not fun. If someone mispronounces your name, its probably less trouble to just grunt an let it slide. Oh yes, and self sacrifice is admirable and you should strive to be as admirable as possible.
I have to say The story between Gideon and Lilliana in Dominaria is actually pretty fun seeing them having to play off each other personality while she's in a place of vulnerability pretty much since they got there Though now He-Man will get the Sword of Power, so hijinx will most definitely arise
these are golden. i cant wait for Jace's episode. Garruk would get a stern talk about his hippocratic life style, assaulting Lilli, beating up some of the other "students", and even threatening Jace.
To answer your most important question, professor: If someone can't pronounce Gideon, he just goes by 'Chad'. Because, let's be fair. He totally looks like a chad.
Have to say, thought these were a sort of easy way to play off less episodes about decks, cards, sleeves, boxes, etc., but I am enjoying them. They are clever.
+Tristan Shutter I don't think he was directly comparing them... Rather asking why is Gideon in Zendikar saving the people of that plane and not saving people on some other plane... like for example Mirrodin. What are his PERSONAL motives for being in Zendikar and not saving lifes in some other plane. And his response was:" I just went with it." So basically no real personal motivation to be in Zendikar. Just "Eh... why not.."
To be fair though, they do touch on the fact that GIdeon wants to be part of every fight. The Battle for Zendikar storyline has him hopping between Ravnica and Zendikar, because he feels a duty to stand up for the oppressed on both planes, and the need to do it all himself.
Haha, great Video. I agree that the whole "Oath-Team" looks like right out a childrens cartoon. Its not only the Planeswalkers of old that where more complex - Garruk, Lilliana and co. where more interresting too and i really liked the Tarkir Story arround Sarkhan, Ugin and Narsets ignition. (Admittedly not as complex Karn, Urza and Co. but i guess thats the prize for expanding as much as mTG has done in the last years) However i can almost understand the Kytheon/Gideon thing. I (writing from my GFs Account) am of North African descent and somewhere during school i stopped trying to get europeans to pronounce my name right. So now when i'm asked how someone should call me i tell them that all three Versions they brought forward are basically not correct and fine by me. And it really is only one version that 90% of the people are using.
Ok, had to pause as i broke down laughing at "fabulous secret powers" XD Although, based on the story he seems to be motivated by seeking to redeem himself for the death of his companions. In the past he put himself ahead and did not think of others, and so now he tries to be as altruistic as possible, still haunted by the deaths he caused through his own arrogance. The changing of the name to Gideon was likely to signify his rebirth as another, better, person, or because he is still ashamed of his past. The character does have proper motivation and depth. Of course, that does make for fun :D
+Ruben Moniz nah, I noticed that as well. Rest assured you are not crazy. Nice to know the Prof is an abomination of all that is holy and RIGHT in the world.... eh? eh? (wink nudge)
loving this series and how you've pointed out the atrocious weaknesses of the planeswalkers' stories especially now Gideon because I was thinking the same thing when I watched SeibenMTG's lore video from origins thinking wow a mispronounced name=changed name...lame come on wizards what happened to the "fantasy" element here not just mass producing cards to make truckloads of cash start thinking more like fantasy writers and making cards that fall in line, but are still awesome to play!!
Gideon has a logical reason for changing his name. His actions single-handedly killed all of his friends back on Theros. Wanting to leave his old identity and baggage behind could cause him to change his name...but, eh. I would like to see one on Xenagos. Maybe Elspeth, but she would be a bit quiet, you know, with that golden mask on now. I've been enjoying these, good job.
I feel like they can say he changed his name because his spark activating was like a rebirth to him so he felt like a new person and wanted to go by a new name
Honestly I get more of a Captain America vibe from Gideon than He-Man, but that's me. These videos are entertaining and all, but I feel like they sacrifice a lot of chances at reasonable criticism for the sake of making jokes. For example, Gideon's borderline unstoppable compulsion to help people in need is, I think, one of the compelling things about his character. It's one of his virtues but also a very real flaw of his. The story "Limits", I believe, did a very good job in highlighting this. He went Ravnica, initially, looking for help defeating the Eldrazi. But there are problems on Ravnica, too, of course - and he can't keep himself from committing to trying to solve those, too. Sure, the scale of the problems are not exactly equal, but: 1) We don't know whether Gideon can, at the time, truly appreciate the scale of the Eldrazi problem and 2) It doesn't matter to Gideon, really, any way. -Any- threat to innocent lives is unacceptable. The end result is that he's torn in two, hopping back and forth between conflicts, unable to fully commit to one or the other because he wants to save -everyone-...and in doing so, he's not really saving anyone effectively and is slowly killing himself. When Jace forces him to at least, y'know, take a breather and heal up a little is a decent character moment, and the first step towards him taking actual, effective responsibility and becoming the leader he becomes in BFZ block. And the name thing, while odd, I don't think was ever actually explained in any sort of detail, so we don't know exactly why he stuck with a different pronunciation (please correct me if I'm wrong, though). But it feels like these details are ignored or embellished for the sake of ragging on the current core characters of the game because, well, it's kind of in vogue, whether or not some of the criticisms they receive are true.
I remember reading that Planeswalkers have a sort-of TARDIS-y type deal where everything's translated automatically through the Spark, rather than it being the case that everyone just happens to speak the same language. It was in an old (old) article on the Mothership. It's ultimately unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but I just thought I should put it out there, since it does make a lot of sense and would explain why someone had difficulties replicating the exact sounds.
i feel like he adopted the name gideon to signify the change in his life brought about by the igniting of his spark and to leave his tragic past behind and start anew. or maybe he just said 'eh' and went with it.. haha
