Pippin has released a performance of "Magic to Do" - which is set to appear in the next episode of hit series The Theatre Channel.
Stephen Schwartz and Roger O Hirson's musical runs through to 5 September.
The piece is directed by Steven Dexter in his third staging of the show.
Set in the ‘Summer of Love' of 1967, Pippin follows a young prince with extraordinary dreams and aspirations on his quest to find passion, fulfilment and meaning.
The production has choreography by Nick Winston, musical supervision by Michael Bradley, design by David Shields, musical direction by Chris Ma, lighting by Aaron J Dootson, sound by Keegan Curran and casting by Anne Vosser.
The eight-person version of Pippin will star Ryan Anderson, returning to the role of Pippin, alongside Ian Carlyle as the Leading Player, Alex James-Hatton as Lewis, Daniel Krikler as Charles, Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson as Fastrada, Natalie McQueen as Catherine, Genevieve Nicole as Berthe and Jaydon Vijn as Theo.
It was originally directed by Bob Fosse and features songs including "Magic to Do" and "Corner of the Sky". Opening on Broadway in 1972, it transferred to the West End the following year.

If you’d told me this was your concept for Pippin, I never would have believed it would look this good. I hope this is pro shot. 🤞🏻

Absolutely stunning, but I think Burns' original orchestrations would suit this production far better; it's a shame MTI doesn't license the pre-revival 'revised 2000 version' any more.

I think these stripped down arrangements sound nice on their own. It doesn’t leave itself hinging on recreating the sounds of the original, but rather use the limited arrangements they have to create something new with the score. However, I really think they should’ve at least brought in the drums and tambourine like from the Ralph Burns arrangements for this number, as that was for sure the most 60s-70s thing about that orchestration, and then it would be perfect in my opinion!

I really wanted to love this... :( My favourite part of the 1972 version was the dancing - by far, and the 2013 version had that jaw dropping circus act, but this seemed like it was lacking a punch. I'm sure it's good though, and maybe if there are more videos, we'll get to see more! I wish the cast and crew huge luck :)

Performance wonderful as well as choreography. The hippy-dippy 70s costume concept can't say I love. However, if I saw it as a live performance in the context of a whole show I'd think I'd be won over.

It’s basically set during the 1967 Summer of Love, a time where the Peace counterculture was all the rage with the youth of that time(what we now dub as hippies) as a sign of protest to the standard American consumerist and socio-political culture that was continuously sending several draftees out to a seemingly purposeless war in South Vietnam(much like our issues today with the War in Afghanistan). Pippin, here, could be interpreted as one of several youths from the 60s who ran away from home(rather than be drafted) to join the movement, and the players here are presented as a peace troupe he believes he’s found.

@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 thanks for your interesting take. I understand but part of the problem for me is it looks costume party sanitized rather than summer of love, which was actually gritty. This looks couture costume collection rather than organic flower child. Less a movement more of a cohesive designers impression of the 1960s.

I"m super fascinated by this style. I love that "join us" is to Pippin... So the burlesque aspects of the show are replaced with what? And is the run time of the show under 2 hours since we aren't gorged with circus acts? And then the ending...???

Is the whole shot on the Theater Channel, or just segments?

This reminds me of the "Present Day" take in that one production of Jesus Christ Superstar when instead of having sets and costumes be biblical they were all modernized. So in short I love the hippie vibe in this

The lighting was really really good and the performers were performing and the camera angles were definitely angling. That’s all I liked. Lmao

it’s just seems too... soft? like there isn’t any power behind it,, the only truly powerful line was “humour handled by a master”,, idk if it’s just cos theyres only a few of them but yeah it just seems off,, and the choreography and staging just missed the mark for me

Wow.....I hate this. It looks much more like Hair than Pippin. The singing and choreography are fine, but the look is just not right for the show.
