": Immortality doesn't mean absence of death, it means the boundary between life and death disappears, and you are in a state neither alive nor dead. :Just as if you were in the living world and the Netherworld at the same time, a Necrofantasia." -- Renko Usami in the story accompanying Necrofantasia in Magic Astronomy
Rotiz Beratiz Everything ZUN does is on purpose. I just can’t wait for an official Manga. Honest I lost my hope on an official Anime, I just want an Official Touhou Story. Official Touhou BACKstory.
I first overlooked this song, thinking it was nothing more than some crazy-ass reason to fuck over Synthesia with impossible midi files... but, going back to the song now, and listening to it again... It's one of the greatest themes I've ever heard. Certainly, it took a genius to compose it; there's no other reason ZUN made the games but to show off his musical talent.
Yukari must have manipulated either the boundary between possible and impossible or the boundary between godlike and even more godlike because this is better than the original.
silly little person..the original comes from touhou Perfect Cherry Blossom where this is her theme during the phantasm stage.you can technically see this as a remix or rework or as superawesomepremium version with 5000000000% more eargasm.the original is already beautiful but this?..mmmmmm...one of mah faves
☆go1☯ GOD Listen. Sagume's ability isn't making happen the opposite of what she says. It's about reversing the situation she's talking about Example: the plane is going to crash Sagume tells you about how the plane will crash. the plane doesn't crash.
0:00 It is just necrofantasia with a beginning. It is very good, but not really compared to the original 3:32 Oh it changes, and it is beautiful. Such masterful work. 3:57 Holy shit! It's......it's.......it's..........*faints*.
What it was before: "0:00 It is just necrofantasia with a beginning. It is very good, but not really compared to the original 3:32 Oh it changes, and it is beautiful. 3:57 "I knew you'd make it~" *Terrified Maribel starts panicking. Fights off Yukari's gentle, motherly hug and cries for help. Her tears fly up because of how fast they're falling.* "You're safe now my dear, don't be afraid~ There's so much for you to see..."
*Resorting unwittingly to unconditional reflexes, Maribel fiercely clutches onto Yukari's dress at the height of her waist and hides her face in it.* *She stops her screaming as her face soaks deep into the purple fabric. Maribel breathes in. The scent of luxurious perfume mixed with what resembles her the aroma of fragrance sticks burned at temples. Nevertheless, she can't put her finger on why this scent feels so familiar...* *Then Maribel frees her face and looks up. All she sees is blinding white. She's lying down, there is grass under her feet, there is birds singing and wind blowing.* *Finally she's able to see Yukari's smiling face looking her straight in the eyes, letting out a tiny wail just before fainting*
1:15 this particular section using percussion to convey emotion and feelings is damn crazy haha, ZUN you madman! 1:35 this quick drumming into the main chorus is insane
What I like about Necrofantasia is that it has in it the feeling of "the fight that will end all fights" due to its almost relentless pace that Ran's version does not have
My favorite in Maribel and Renko (ZUN) album is : 1. Necrofantasia 2. Kids Festival ~ Innocent treasures 3. Necro fantasy 4. Pure furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart 5. Night falls ~ Evening star
+Hym Verdan I thought it was a Disney reference as Fantasia is an animated film that makes animations to fit the music, much like how ZUN made Touhou to essentially create a soundtrack, and how much Disney inspired Japanese media. Also Fun Fact: IMDb's rating for Fantasia is 7.8/10. Guess why?
red/orange: chen (it means orange I think) blue: ran indigo/violet: yukari Zun know about the chakras and colors and what they are related too and also the colors used for clothes in the major religions for the rank, it goes in a chromatic order starting from red to purple.
You have done it. At 1:37 you have finally reached the peak touhou drop. You have found the song that you were looking for. Add it to your playlist so that you can never forget it.
Fans: Touhou is about cute girls doing cute things! Magical Astronomy: "Capitalism, just as a Noah's Ark, has promoted the economic gaps. Because of this, the birth rates of all countries have fallen, though this just means that capitalism has entered its final step, population controlling."
@@WomanSlayer69420 Technically yes.ZUN sometimes put some hints about the cruel reality in our current world. Keep in mind MagAst is supposed to be ZUN's Official AU about the Outside World AKA our real life.
I've been a Touhou Project fan since around 2016-2017 now (I've definitely seen all the NicoNico stuff way before that, but didn't realize it was Touhou). And I really mean it when I say that this song consistently bring tears in my eyes. I genuinely can't explain why, I just know this song emotionally resonates with me and I often use it to calm down when having panic attacks. I obviously know he isn't going to see this comment, regardless I'll still say it: Thank you so much ZUN, you have genuinely left a huge impact on the teen years of my life, and many more to come, from the fun games, interesting lore, characters with amazing designs, being absolutely chill with such a massive fanbase, and with some of the best music I've ever heard in my life!
I feel it get gradually more powerful as it goes along, though. At first, she was playing with you, seeing if you even had something close to her power. Near the end, she realizes you put up a fight, and kicks it up double-time.
For 10 years already this is the song i always start i brand new year in, it was the song that made me get into Touhou, and is funny how a game like this changed my life so much, even as the years go by and i grow older, this game, this theme and Yukari herself will always hold a place in my heart
idk why but i compared Yukari to an artist/author, they can create whatever they want, and Yukari can quite literally change humanities fate like a painting or book, or anything really.
It's quite possible that Maribel is going to become Yukari, as Yukari is near omnipotent. She might just become Yukari in the following years and go through the gap between present and past.
+gege029 My theory is that Maribel is Yukari and Lafcadio Hearn's child, that would explain both her appearance, her powers similar to Yukari and her name. It's possible, because Yukari can go to the real world when she wants, so she could have met Lafcadio Hearn here
+gege029 I don't think Maribel and Yukari are the same person, if they were, Yukari would probably remember Renko and at least mention her at some point.
Such an incredible piece. You can't help but return to it over and over again. It inspires so many emotions including love, wonder, curiosity, excitement, awe, nostalgia, and even fear and sadness. It's truly a theme befitting of Gensokyo and Touhou as a whole, along with Gensokyo the Gods Loved and Broken Moon.
Necrofantasia. Even though the sun has set and dinner time was approaching, they finally left the café after eating the new cake. In this university, students can pay with a student card in any of the shops on campus. The price is collected along with the tuition monthly. It reduces the need for managing money, avoids crowded registers, and lets students shop easily (because their parents pay for the tuition), increasing sales as a result. But thanks to that, students now find their expenses piling up much more than expected. "There's supposed to be an elixir of immortality on the Moon, apparently." "Immortality, huh? Doesn't seem like someone like you would need it though, right Renko? What with the end of physics fast approaching and nihilism about to take hold of you." "Who are you calling a nihilist? I'm practically bursting with life. Why, I'm sleeping soundly at night even now because I'm so excited about what the universe holds." "Then, would you take it if you happened to get your hands on it, Renko?" Although the world had developed rapidly, with just about every country enjoying prosperity to some degree, mankind itself had merely moved on to its next stage. The human population, which had continued to grow exponentially since before the Common Era, had shifted into a phase of gradual decline. Like a proverbial Noah's Ark, capitalism had exacerbated society's inequalities through economics. As a result, nations across the board had shown a decline in birth rates, though this was all merely a sign that they had entered capitalism's final stage: population control. As one of the first nations to have had to turn its attention to the issues brought on by rapidly declining birth rates and population collapse, Japan was able to skillfully avoid the downsides brought about by this depopulation. Moreover, thanks to the efforts of its chosen people, it was able to successfully revitalize its national character, rich in industriousness and mindfulness. "The elixir of immortality? Of course I'd take it. You know why immortality is portrayed as a terrible thing to have to bear in stories and such? Those were all meant to serve as cautionary tales against greed and to celebrate rebellion against figures of authority. But on the flip side, the fact that those stories even exist serves as proof that the elixir of immortality is a real thing. Immortality doesn't imply the absence of death. Rather, it merely implies a state of existence in which the boundary between life and death disappears, and you exist as neither alive nor dead. It'd be like a bona fide Necrophantasia-a practical realization of being in a world somewhere in between the world of the living and the Netherworld at the same time."
I wonder why Megalovania from Undertale was giving me a Touhou Vibe. Precisely, this song was the reason. I strongly believe that Toby Fox was inspired from ZUN’s music...
Not only that, but Toby has stated before that one of his favorite characters is Ran, with Toriel's clothing design being a direct reference to Ran. On top of that, "The World Revolving" (from Deltarune) was also inspired by Clownpiece's theme from Touhou 15. Toby Fox just has really good taste in video games apparently.
@@Kurumizawa_Hikari You know, at least from what I've seen of the touhou fandom, I'd probably call that pretty tame lol. ZUN and Toby Fox are actually friends, it's pretty wholesome.
It's ironic how Yukari's powers manifest as being able to open gaps to anywhere she wants, yet so much emphasis is put on how she can only come to existence due to her "closing gaps" between two things (the gap between life and death, the gap between the 'real' world and Gensokyo, etc.)
Into the gap, full of all that can happen, Full of things you have never been able to conceive. Only once you’ve been caught, if you see the catch or not, Is it easier then to believe? Between the known and unknown is a realm of its own, so Full of things you have never prepared to understand. Never resting in place within ever-fluid space, oh: Welcome to my borderland. I’m proposing a toast: to this beautiful fabric that binds our very world together. Of course, I’d say the most beautiful thing is watching it elegantly ripped apart. Now, drink up! Surely you know, there’s always the best time to be had in that dangerously intoxicating state, right on the border of consciousness. Spend suspended one moment caught between life and death, Resting soundly, all thoughts resounding, and drifting finally undefined. Images reprise to the beat of your measured breath, Those remembered and those invented each blurring over your fragile mind… At this breaking hour, blossom like a flower; Every fold will soon be opened, vastly bursting at the seam. Draw your lines in vain, grasping to explain at all The difference of a nightmare from a dream. Flow from every joint, in more ways than signs can point: You lose your sense and let illusion spirit you away. Just a trick of light casts the world in black and white; What keeps it all from blending into gray? Raw power at the peak, not a single weakness In the masterful design yet holding strong. Planned, perfectly precise- shall it suffice to say It’s all being made up as it goes along? Eyes, steady in a gaze, watch you as you graze That fragile axis, nearly phasing through the crack. Where on this globe does west become the east? Careful. At that point, there is no turning back.
It's kind of hard to explain, but I love that deep piano note that plays during the main melody on beat one after the first measure. Something about it sounds awesome to me.
I really like this one more than PCB’s Necrofantasia. I don’t know whether it’s because of the fact that this is Magical Astronomy, or because the beginning giving me this feeling of…power? I mean, it kinda makes me realise just how powerful Yukari is… Or is that just me?
No, this is usually considered the best version of Necrofantasia. Certain additions like the new piano intro you mentioned are just incredibly majestic and awe-inspiring. It's a grand song. To me it represents not just the power of Yukari herself but the majesty of Gensokyo as a whole.
First picture: slowly keeps zooming in Second picture: slowly keeps zooming out EDIT: this took me a while to realise when i wrote this comment i was so focused on the pictures lol
@Punisher106 ZUN himself even said this was way too much like the original. Besides, most of the cd versions of the themes he already made are really no different than the original. Except maybe some instrumental differences, a tone difference, or an extra part added to the song. For instance, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess on Retrospective 59 minutes, the beginning had an instrumental change a slowed down pace, and slight differences through the song, but otherwise, it's the same.
@@marisakirisame867 truely you where ahead of all of us And you still continue enjoy this series ever after all these years despite what I assume people will moved on from touhou
@Evan Stormthorn Neither Renko nor Maribel can fly or use any form of magic, and we may already have Maribel in some Touhou games. You may be listening to her theme right now, it's a common theory that Zun seems to hint at being true more than once. (I believe Maribel's wiki page details all of it)
Well, Maribel might be Yukari's relative, according to the wikia, and she as the power to see the boundaries (so, in a way, she completes Yukari's power) and she as the power to travel any where with the dream realm, while her friend is able to say exatly where she is only by looking at the stars (or to make it simple: she is a GPS)
William Côté well, it is known that yukari yakumo is not her real name, and that we know that she had some relations with the Hearn family, so yukari might be an ancestor or the one who gave such power to the Hearn's.
An ancestor...? Let me put it this way. When asked what the relationship between Yukari Yakumo and Maribel Hearn was ZUN made a statement along the lines of "There was this Lafcadio Hearn" and laughed. That's a pretty obscure bit of history, so I wouldn't expect anyone to know about it, but Lafcadio Hearn is a westerner who moved to Japan, and when he did he changed his name to Koizumi *Yakumo* . So, Yukari is person with the last name *Yakumo* who (According to Rinnosuke, and some of Gensokyo's historical records) almost certainly used to go by a different name. Meanwhile, there's a certain Maribel *Hearn* who she happens to have a suspiciously strong resemblance to in appearance, taste in clothing, and even ability. To be perhaps a little clearer, Lafcadio was a Hearn who *became* a Yakumo. He didn't give birth to one, he didn't have one as his ancestor, he *became* one. Yukari is a Yakumo who used to have a different name. Maribel is a Hearn who shows strong signs of becoming a Youkai given how strongly her powers are developing. The parallels and history here should make it clear what I'm getting at, and what it's very likely ZUN meant.

It would be a massive shame if bad apple overtakes this as the most viewed video on this channel More people need to know about ZUN's non-game music greatness
I like how sometimes, the main riff counterpoints the last part of the song, melodic and dissonant at the same time, as if the song broke its own boundaries.
i'd like to highlight something interesting: marybel and renko are best friends, yukari and yuyuko too *doesn't yuyuko used to have brown hair before she died?*
Fefnir Reiuji Idk it's a good theory but... aren't Maribel and Renko characters supposed to live in the "future" (because for now, their club is directed by Sumireko)? While Yuyuko died before the events of PCB and Yukari is a Youkai that existed before the Hakurei Barries separated Gensokyo from the rest of the world.
Waifu Rulezz they can just be ancestors, also it's just something that i was thinking interesting to fit as a plus in some yukari=marybel theories ^^
Waifu Rulezz also yuyuko can't directly be renko as we know her father's name (wich debunk the made-up name and all that stuff), the context of her death and all the backstory behind her. even if her or yukari invented all of that, i don't really think they would go this far in the lie (like inventing her a father) just to cover their true names for some *rollerblading* reasons.
for me, even though this song is about Dead fantasy, it also gives the energy of rebirth, empowerment, fighting back, and the energy that makes you feel like a super hero. Alot of ZUN songs, even til this day, continue to capture the powerful feeling that no other genera has ever done. These days, alot of songs have weak melody, compex chords, and overall a huge mass. But here, ZUN just went full Armstrong mode and go like "Get up, theres always hope in this collapsing world," and push you to go full powermode. Like even if you ever read the story in the album, it specifically states how the world is in the state of population control. And this song, just gives you the feeling that your on the mission to rescue the world we live in. To be honost, I feel like we more music like these to give hope and energy to those who are in the state of deprassion and pain. Thats why, for me Touhou saved me from the ashes and give me a new beginning. Thank You ZUN for this amazing series, and let hope never die!!
