Field of Dreams is a 1989 American sports fantasy drama film written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, based on Canadian novelist W. P. Kinsella's 1982 novel Shoeless Joe. The film stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the Chicago Black Sox. Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster (in his final film role) also star. It was theatrically released on May 5, 1989.

Top 3 baseball movies. If you don't have a tear in your eye at the end, you are dead inside. One of my many favorite moments in this movie is when Shoeless Joe tells Doc Graham that he was good. Burt Lancaster did such a great job in that moment. You could see in his face how much that meant to him.

4:06 Field Of Dreams a great movie choice! The B&W film here is "Harvey" (1950) a fun Jimmy Stewart comedy you would enjoy. Josephine Hull, who plays Stewart's older sister in it, won a well deserved Best Supporting Oscar for her role. After watching it you'll understand why a piece of it was placed here in Field Of Dreams and Ray's reaction. 12:20 Another fantasy you would enjoy is 1939's classic, "The Wizard of Oz". You may already know the joke of the line here, if not you'll find out watching Oz. Another great Kevin Costner film you definitely need to do a react vid on is "Dances With Wolves" (1990) and I urge you to do the Original Theatrical Release which is 3 hours long as it is, rather than the extended version which is a long 4 hours and is just not as good as the original. The OTR was the box office hit and won 7 Academy awards like Best Picture, Director, Music Score, Cinematography, etc. It's best watched without any research on it. Enjoyed your reaction vid and knew you would like Field Of Dreams.

"If you build it, he will come." Fun Fact: Although his character delivers the movie's signature speech praising baseball, in real life, James Earl Jones hates baseball. Despite this, he would play another baseball enthusiast four years later in The Sandlot (1993). Location Location Fact: After the filming was completed, the family that owned the farm kept the field and added a small hut with inexpensive souvenirs for sale. Visitors are (as far as I know) free to come to the field and play baseball as they please between April and November. Baseball Camp Fact: Ray Liotta had no baseball experience and batted right-handed, although "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was a lefty. Phil Alden Robinson allowed Liotta to bat with his right, but still put him through several weeks of extensive training with University of Southern California baseball coach and former Brooklyn Dodger Rod Dedeaux in order to be convincing as one of the sport's greatest hitters. Liotta eventually developed a good swing. The scene where he hits a line-drive straight back at Kevin Costner actually happened. Costner's fall on the mound was real, and although it was a surprise, he stayed in character.

i remember a few yrs ago when i introduced this movie to my son, he was mid teens and cynical and not ready. when archie graham showed up, he was asking me “is this gonna be emotional?” i wouldn’t say. so by the time ray’s father was revealed, he was like “aw mom! you could’ve warned me!” he didn’t like being emotional in front of me at that age. i went to wash dishes and give him peace. i thought it was funny but wouldn’t let him know. we laugh about it now, but it really got to him.

One of my fave movies. The emotion of this movie, about family drama, but tied together by the history of baseball. James Earl Jones' line about America being erased like a blackboard and rebuilt again, with the only constant being baseball is one of the best lines ever. Another really good Kevin Costner baseball movie is For Love of the Game and also Bull Durham

Just watched your TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD reaction. And in response to you request for more great classic B&W movies of that calibre, here are two more from that time period (and both won Oscars in the major categories). THE MIRACLE WORKER (best actress & best supporting actress in 1962) LILIES OF THE FIELD (best picture of 1963) And as an honorable mention consider the iconic fantasy/comedy HARVEY from 1950. With IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, it is one of Jimmy Stewart's most beloved movies. And it is the one you noticed in the movie just now that Ray's daughter was watching and thought was funny. AFI ranks it at #7 in their list of greatest fanasy films of all time. And I think you'll agree.

I'm not a crazy baseball guy but I am an American, after all. This is the quintessential American film. My dad died when I was 8 and the reunion Ray gets with his dad...kills me even to think about it. When he finally calls him "dad" it's a full blown emotional meltdown. And MY dad sucked. LOL! BUT the absence of any possibility I could ever know him is still fuckin' hard. And I turn 60 this year. Enough sadness! This film is so beautiful! It ranks also closely with RUDY & HOOSIERS both directed by David Anspaugh. I worked a couple weeks on Hoosiers in fall of 1985. I was a student at Hickory High and a PA. That was fun. I wanna do a video about that some time.

You're probably too young to recognize Burt Lancaster who played the older Moonlight Graham. Her was a famous actor in the classic era from the 1940s all the way through to about 1990. This was one of his last film appearances.

The field is still there and Is the Field of Dreams Stadium permanent? The existing movie site will remain intact, while the base of the temporary ballpark built for the 2021 Field of Dreams Yankees/White Sox event, will be expanded into a permanent facility.Nov 29, 2022. Whether or not Terrance Mann dies at the end by entering the cornfield is left up to the viewer. Lines like Joe Jackson saying Ray better not and Terrance telling him he has a family imply he may. Regardless, it seems he also gets to live his dream. He was not dead the whole time however as he clearly interacts with the stadium concession employees who take his order and hand him food and Ray's brother in law who shakes his hand and doesn't believe it's the real Terrance Mann when introduced (before he could see the ghost players).

Archibald "Moonlight" Graham was a real person whose name always gets into the conversation when speaking of shortest mlb careers. They took some liberty with his birth and death and playing years (being off by about ten years), but he did become a doctor in Minesota. And the people in Chisholm they interviewed in the movie were townfolk who actually knew him. So their descriptions were authentic.

So much fun to watch the movie with you. Burt Lancaster is one of our classic actors and I highly recommend "Gun Fight at OK Corral" and "Sweet Smell of Success" both from 1957 as great films of Mr. Lancaster.

Another Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas matchup was "Seven Days in May", a thriller.about a military plot to overthrow the US government. Brilliantly directed by John Frankenheimer and Rod Serling was one of writers of the screenplay.

I think Dr. Graham needed to know that he he really did control his own destiny. He wanted to know that he decided to become a doctor because he wanted to, not because he had to. He was given the chance to bat, to play with the greats, and to know that he was good enough to make it as a big league player. Even knowing that, he decided to walk another path. Many people feel like they were right to move on from an old incomplete dream, but suffer from doubt over what could have been.

I look forward to playing catch with my dad again ;-) My mother's father was recruited by the NY Yankees in the 1920s, but to join their minor team he would have to leave all his family in Kansas and only return for visits ... he declined the opportunity for that reason. The extended family used to play ball out by the old cemetery, after visiting the graves on Memorial Day.

The movie with Jimmy Stuart was “Harvey”, a film about a guy who befriends a six-foot tall invisible rabbit of ambiguous provenance. There is also a “Harvey” reference in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, when a patron says “yeah, I seen a rabbit…. say ‘hello’, Harvey”.

MLB built a real field next to the movie set and have played games there. The very first game they played, Kevin Costner came back and you could see the emotion on his face as he walked through the corn onto the field. Also, the obituary of Archie was actually the word got word obituary of the real Doc Graham.

4:16 _Harvey_ (1950) based on the 1944 play by Mary Chase. She won a Pulitzer Prize for it in 1945. ETA: Harvey is the name of Elwood P. Dowd's giant rabbit friend, who nobody can see but him.

Having seen this movie at least 15 times, I only just realized an error in the intro. Ray says he was born in 1952. That would mean he went off to college in the fall of 1969....but he says he majored in the '60s. Most all of his college years would have been in the '70s!!!

This is my personal greatest movie of all time pick, sports or not. It hits so many notes. I've never not cried and I've seen it probably 50 times. Of course I grew up playing ball with my dad as my coach. I'm in my 40s now. This movie hits the themes of redemption, forgiveness, reconciliation, second chances, family, baseball, relationships with your parents or kids, realizing your dreams or sacrificing them for the greater good and I'm sure many others. So well done and it never gets old.

I don't care about baseball that much but I do care about...FAMILY, a la Vin Diesel and his crew. Just kidding, I've only seen one Fast and Furious movie and that was enough for a lifetimes. It's not for me. But what is for me is how you approach some 90s baseball movies like this (maybe 1988-89). There is "The Natural" from the early 80s starring Robert Redford and Glenn Close and a little magic. There is "Eight Men Out" starring David Strathairn. There is "Major League," a comedy starring Charlie Sheen and Tom Berenger. Not sure but I guess this baseball movie craze was assisted by Glenn Frey's song "Boys of Summer" from around the same time.

There seem to be two universal constants with this movie when people react to it. The ending is a nuclear bomb of emotions..... and Annie is a fucking awesome wife and a hell of a woman! Beula was lucky Annie decided to just make her argument instead of stepping outside and throwing hands. Annie would've tuned her up so fast. Should couldn't handle that smoke.

Burt Lancaster has always been a favorite of mine, he was excellent the way he can deliver a line is awesome. The speech st the end about baseball and the world that James earl Jones gives is special. I am 64 and that speech gets me everytime. This movie is one of those movies where you say they don't make movies like this anymore. I gotta go get a kleenex see you again✌

The movie at the beginning with James Stewart is called Harvey. It's a great movie, I loved it as a child. Personally, I think Terrance had already passed away a day or so before he was taken on the road trip, which is why he could go into the corn field. Thanks for the reaction to this beautiful movie

No... He just left with Ray without telling anyone he was going with Costner to find Moonlight Graham. His son mistakenly thought he was missing until his dad called him to tell him he was with Ray and NOT missing

Interesting theories, but in the source material, that character was JD Salinger, who was very much alive at the time... so it can definitively be said that the "intention" was never to have him be a ghost... but if that's how you prefer to view it, then that's how you should view it.

There's a fantastic audio book out there called 'The Glory of Their Times' by Lawrence Ritter created back in the early 1960's, who thought it would be a good idea to interview some of the surviving players from the dead ball era of baseball while there was still time. There's some fascinating insight into some of the great players such as 'Shoeless' Joe and events as well as the White Sox scandal. If you're a fan of the game I would highly suggest checking it out. Some ppl put in too much thought…it’s great. It just is. It’s way more than a baseball movie. Now imagine, Terence Mann walks into a cornfield, changes his name, buys a dog named “The Beast” and the next thing you know he’s giving Scotty Smalls a baseball signed by every member of the 1927 Yankees. Not trying to make light of two amazing movies, just sayin…😮
