My favorite courtroom drama is Witness for the Prosecution (1957), which was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Recording. It was based on a short story by Agatha Christie.

The movies that Jonathan Lynn directed have the movie’s title in dialogue somewhere in the film. Clue, My Cousin Vinny, The Distinguished Gentleman, Greedy, Sgt. Bilko, Trial and Error, The Whole Nine Yards, etc.

Congratulations to the only reaction channel I have ever seen recognize the Judge as Herman Munster....and there wasn't any bad person in this film. Everyone was just doing there jobs....and really who wouldn't think these kids were guilty until they found the 2 kids who really did it. Even if Pesci got them off, most people would think they 'got away with murder'.

The film has been praised by lawyers as one of the more realistic movies about the justice system and the lawyer profession, and certainly one of the most successful ones at drawing humor from a courtroom setting

It was so accurate that when it was released there was only one major procedural error, at least until there was a change in the system and now it’s not an error.

It is still shown today, in many Universities, for new law students to watch as it is the most accurate portrayal on a courtroom proceeding . It is also noted in may law books too!

One of the nice things about this movie is that no one that we meet in the courtroom drama is a villain: they're all doing their jobs. We're prepared for that in the whole hunting section: the little conversation between Lane and Pesci is open and sympathetic; Lane is a dedicated prosecutor determined to win his case, but that's why he's paid, and he explains his perspective in that scene. The judge warns Vinny in his first scene that he's an impatient man when it comes to procedure; and his instincts about Vinny's level of expertise and his honesty with the judge are correct. When Lisa, at first, doesn't answer Lane's question, the judge doesn't throw her out of the witness box: he takes the time to clarify what the problem is and allows her time to explain. The witnesses all honestly believe what they think they've seen. I like that.

Excellent statement - everybody is trying to do the right thing, and it's one of the few movies where there is no bad guy shown. This film is often used in law school to teach procedure. It is an amazing performance by everybody involved. Marisa is perfect, absolutely deserving of the Oscar, and Joe is incredible ... my favorite role for him. I've loved Fred Gwynne since his Car 54 days. A lot of people don't know that he wrote children's books and I recently bought a set of them ... such a wonderful and gracious person. Herman type cast him to a certain point, and he ended up feeling captured in that character, but Herman just might be my favorite television character of all-time, right there with Barney Fife and Ted Lasso.
@melenatorr
@melenatorr 10 месяцев назад
@@chadbennett7873 I also loved Herman Munster! In our family it was a dead heat between the Munsters and the Addams Family. The Addamses won out just slightly because our father was from Spain and, well, Gomez. A lot of wonderful actors ended up trapped in the public perception of their popular tv roles during the 60s and 70s - it's one of the reasons Leonard Nimoy resented Spock for so many years: he simply could no longer work as an actor of the range he knew he had. Yes, Gwynne wrote some lovely children's books like "The King Who Rained" - he seemed to have been a very charming man. (John Lithgow is also an actor/author).

@melenatorr

@@barowt Maybe not even there: there's a running undercurrent in the movie of people not understanding the conversation being held, and that might apply here: the sheriff, under pressure and probably grieving the death of someone in a very small community, hears what he hears and runs with it. The circumstances and the witnesses all confirm what he has understood. But when it comes to it, after an initial resistance, he agrees to run down Vinny's hunch, just requesting to know why.

I absolutely love that no one is really a villain in this movie. Well the murderers I guess. Sure, the judge is a hard ass. But the prosecutor isn't malicious. He's just doing his job. The witnesses weren't lying. They were just certain about what they saw. It demonstrates the great shortcoming of eye witness testimonies. When the truth comes out they all accept it gladly. In terms of flash and style, A Few Good Men and The Social Network are two of my favorite courtroom dramas (even the Social Network is more of just a deposition). A lot of it has to do with Sorkin’s dialogue. But I think my favorite of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck. His closing argument is one of the best performances I have ever seen. Almost 7 minutes, and he only needed to do it once. He nailed it on the first try. Absolutely incredible.

24:41 - *_Well that was a very Costanza-esque performance from Joe Pesci right there! 😂 (Maybe that is why George loves Marisa Tomei in this movie: He sees himself as Vinny, hitched up to her! 🤣)_* 35:01 - *_t's not just that it is his court room or that he dislikes Vinny: Trotter was right when he told Vinny that new evidence, if it is discovered during the trial, maybe be presented as a surprise (Vinny himself later does this with the pictures of the tire marks). The only thing that the judge could have been more flexible with is that when, after the testimony, Vinny asks for time to review this new evidence, most judges probably would have agreed to adjourn for the day and let the defense work on it overnight to the next day (But then again, the judge gets that note about Vinny possibly not being the lawyer he pretended to be... So it get nebulous as whether or nor he is being a d*ck or just stickler for rules; I personally always thought the judge in this movie it just a really conservative and proud judge who runs a tight show -Sure, Vinny rubs him the wrong way & so he doesn't cut him any slack, but I don't think he would have been much more lenient with any other out-of-town lawyer. And as we see later, bith the judge and Trotter aren't resentful to Vinny: They operated under the conviction that they were rightfully perusing justice for the man who got shot and thought the evidence showed they had the right guys; which is why they are all happy in the end, because justice triumphed and two innocent boys were freed!)_* *_Fun fact: The Legal Eagle, a lawyer/RU-vidr, made a great analysis of My Cousin Vinny's court room proceedings and declare that all of the procedures were in fact in line with true court room procedures and therefore a pretty accurate depiction of said proceedings (And apparently, some law professor show the movie to their students as a study of both what to do and what NOT to do!)_*

It’s a well constructed and well done film and it’s not cynical. There isn’t a character you don’t like including the antagonists. And I love that Tomei won an Oscar for this, now she won over basically a 4 way split vote but comedic roles are undervalued at the Oscar’s so I appreciate she won for one. The courtroom shots are fantastic, courtroom films are often so static but this brought a kinetic energy to it that I don’t think other films haven’t followed.

Since the photo apparently showed them from a drastically different angle, Vinny asked Mr. Trotter if they could agree it was a photo of the same marks, which he did. It was only then entered as evidence, supplemental to what had already been seen and admissable. Mr. Trotter had already told Vinny he thought he had the case sewn up so he didn't realize how Vinny could get anything from the one photo and saw/had no reason to object.

Alternatively, if Lisa refused to testify or was disallowed as an expert witness: given that Vinny is an experienced auto mechanic himself, the rules of court would have allowed himself to take the stand as an expert witness, since he had no way of knowing that his own general knowledge of American automobiles would be relevant to the case.

the Director was worried about Owl scene thinking the Owl would fly away but it turned out to be a very Lucky one shot take where the reaction and expression from the Owl in the scene was like a gift from the film God's.

Great movie one of the best legal movies not just a great comedy. I heard This movie is so accurate lawyers study it. Other great legal movies are The Rainmaker ,A Civil Action. The part that always kills me is the public defender who looks so perfect and than he is completely useless where he cant speak at court. The girl is Marisa Tommi who plays Peter Parker Aunt May in the Mcu. Vinny Cousin is Ralph Macho who plays in The Karate Kid.

I like that after hearing the testimony, the prosecutor dismissed all the charges. Prosecutors don’t want to send innocent people to jail, but in movies we usually see them dig their heels in.

The reason why Vinny could go sound asleep in the prison wasn't because of confidents. It's a northern city type thing that hearing the sirens and riot fights seem more familiar so it was like having that white noise he's used to in the background, that he can fall asleep to...whereas the steam whistles, trains and pigs are familiar sounds a southerner isn't bothered by.

Slurpees and Slush Puppies are not entirely the same. True that they are both made with ice and flavored syrup, but there is difference in the ice. The ice in Slurpees is of such a small coarse, so small that you can't see the ice, but you can feel a fine grittiness. Slush Puppies have larger very small beads of ice; you can see them and feel them - Old school snow cones had the same size ice beads. The best I can describe the Ice beads is to relate to stick pins, a very specific type of stick pin, primarily used when sewing - the head of the that stick pin is closest to the size of the ice in a Slush Puppy. In short, Slush Puppies are chunky.
