Safia & Chris play Pokemon Blue for the original Game Boy (on the Super Game Boy!) for the first time!

Spike was really an MVP there, and I'm jealous that Safia is raising a Rhyhorn and I'm not now! ahaha (I was actually guessing we'd need to do a restart, but Safia is SKILLED!)

This was a whirlwind of a video. Safia was fortunate with her Zapdos encounter: Rhyhorn pulled through, and she got a couple of lucky breaks in that clutch Critical Hit to bring it down to red health + the successful catch despite her Ultra Ball stash being lower from having caught the other stuff in the Power Plant. Some moments had me internally screaming: Safia seems to have a knack for juuuuuust barely missing unexplored territory and "game-advancing areas". XD Some humourous moments too: "Lighting", magnet cannibalism, T-Wave on Rhyhorn and the Zapdos vs. Rattata encounter were amusing, but the TM 20 bit got a good chuckle out of me. We're getting closer to the end! Looking forward to Gym 8.

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks so much for the comment! =D I was trying to be sly with my suggestions to stop catching so many things! ahaha (I also left in my comment after Safia exited the store -- "Safia stocked up on Ultra Balls...she bought FIVE..." LMAO) Really, Spike pulled through and did what I thought was impossible (...or rather, unlikely!). And I feel the same way! I try to keep my screaming internal, but sometimes it comes out! ahaha Fun BGR fact: I leave markers for sections that are eligible for the "funny clip" preview thingy we do at the beginning of most episodes. This episode probably had the most out of any episode! Also...the Rage TM was after a long session of item/PC management and teaching TMs to Pokemon to make room for more items. And to help speed up the process, I just told her to take these TM #'s and sell them, because you can get replacements, or they suck. But I thought she'd like to see what TM20 that she'd been "saving for later" contained...

Nothing like watching an 8 bit Pokémon game in glorious 1440p! Makes you appreciate all the finer pixels, haha! This was one of your best episodes so far! Your banter was on point, and Safia's confusion was just hilarious. She persevered and caught a lot of Pokémon, including another legendary. So congrats to her! The hour flew by, and I smiled all the way through :) The power plant is a nice bonus location, since it's so easy to forget the little waterway by the time you get Surf. You really have to be in a 'gotta catch them all' mode to find this place. The encounter rate is annoyingly brutal though, even if the exp gained is decent. I had a brain fart here, wanting to find an Electabuzz. It took a while to remember I was playing the wrong version, hah! I gave Dream Eater to my Hypno quite early on. He did most of the heavy lifting with that move in so many tough spots. Don''t have a type advantage? No worries, Hypno is here to slay! Did Chris watch the anime a lot? I had many vhs tapes full of recorded Pokémon episodes. If I ever missed one, it was a sad sad day...

Woohoo! Someone appreciates the 1440p! ahaha (but really, it just means we can scale it a perfect 6x, I think it is...I think we may have been skewing it a bit originally?) Thanks for your kind words, and really glad you enjoyed the episode! It's good to know we've still "got it" after almost a year of not recording. And this was even after recording the Safari Zone side episode in the same day! I (Chris) absolutely LOVE the Power Plant. I felt like a genius when I found it as a kid. Zapdos was rare at my school! (Although, I never did catch Articuno in my original game...or Moltres, but nbd with that one! haha) Similar experience for me -- except it happened in Red! I always have trouble finding Electabuzz, Magmar, and Muk (in Yellow) for some reason. I'm hoping Electabuzz won't be like CATERPIE was in Viridian Forest in my LP... Dream Eater is great against the AI, but it's almost a waste of a move slot if you want to use it in PVP...and especially since my Hypno knows Flash, I don't have space to teach him Dream Eater, sadly... I watched Season 1 of the anime RELIGIOUSLY! haha But it was less interesting once the Orange League and whatnot started up. I moved on from the whole all-encompassing fad to just the games by the time Gen 2 came out. But as a kid, for the longest time, I didn't miss an episode of Pokemon! haha It was the worst feeling going to school and everyone had watched the episode, but you hadn't...especially if you didn't set up the VCR to record it properly, so you'd never get to see that episode! lol

Oh yes, you are still going strong! I wouldn't even have noticed you'd been gone, if not for the fact that I was there the whole time waiting for your return, haha! Can't wait for the final push all the way to the end, and for the coming adventures. :) Now that I think about it, I didn't find Magmar this playthrough either. Weird how the encounters work out sometimes, even if you check the probabilities from Bulbapedia. I also really wanted a male Nidoran in the early game, but he just would not show up! I ended up having Nidoqueen instead. I wouldn't use Dream Eater competitively either but in the normal game it is just ridiculously useful. Massive damage and healing, all the while your opponent snoozes! I did actually have Flash on my Hypno as well. :D I remembered vividly there being other caves besides the Rock Tunnel that required it... Oops, big mistake! The move is stupidly inaccurate as well, so what a waste! Similarly, the original series was everything to me at the time, but started to lose steam towards the end. I stopped watching around the time Misty left the group. The first 4 films (including Mewtwo returns) saw heavy rotation from me as well. I refuse to watch any of that as an adult, I'd rather keep the good memories, hehe!

@@M1sterWhiskers Haha, thanks as always for your support!! =) Nidoran F was another rough one for me, but I don't think I had too much trouble with many others...just Tauros, Nidoran F, and Caterpie. Tauros makes sense, Nidoran F is one of those evil 1/20s who just don't feel like 5% sometimes, and Caterpie...I don't even know what to say. LOL The good thing about flash is, weirdly, that it pairs well with Hypnosis...sometimes. Blind them in their sleep, I guess? But it really should be a 100% accurate move...and at least 1 other cave should've been dark! I loved the first Pokemon movie with Mewtwo! They showed off some Gen 2 Pokemon and gave out Pokemon cards...neat stuff. I watched it a few years ago, and it's actually pretty watchable today (if you go in with the mindset that you're watching what's essentially a cartoon advertisement, at least! haha)

Bzzzzzt ! What an episode ! :o I really laugh when Chris asked "Do you remember how to battle ?" just to see Safia try Thunder Wave on a Rhyhorn, it was perfect. :P I won't lie, I was a little bit scared when I saw that Safia only have 16 ultra ball for the whole Power Plant ! It's nice that it all work out at the end, except I'm sad she did not encounter *SPOILER* an Electabuzz, it's one of my favorite Gen 1 Pokémon ! Maybe she'll see it in her Pokédex someday, I don't remember if she saw one yet from a trainer or not... EDIT : I saw that Electabuzz is only in Red, sad. :( Oh, and it's funny, my girlfriend is smaller than Zapdos too haha ! And I'm happy to know I was not alone thinking that the guys just have a really big hat when I was younger ! I'm not feeling stupid anymore, thanks Safia ! When I saa the Abra sprite, I was really questionning myself, did Lalilay de-volve ? I guess not, but I was still WTF for a second haha. I think it is the first time I see someone on a bycicle in viridian forest too... strange mix. Anyway ! Thanks for the great episode ! I'm hype to see if I will be able to attend your stream, I'm looking forward to it !

YEAH! That's why I started discouraging her from catching Pokemon, ahaha And Electabuzz is why I'm dreading my "no healing challenge" going through the Power Plant...haha But I don't think any trainer uses one! At least not until Victory Road, maybe? We'll be posting a poll soon to get an idea of what days/times work for people, so make sure you vote! We'd like to have you there, if possible! =D

Raichu's in the Power Plant in blue, but not in red! I always thought that was one of the weirdest version discrepancies. Also weirdly, I feel like I also only ever found them up in the northern part of the plant... but that's probably a coincidence. I somehow thought Safia's girlfriend was in Rock Cave rather than Moon Tunnel, but could easily be misremembering... In any case, I can't wait to see the thrilling conclusion over the next few episodes--it's been such a fun journey!

Yeah, and they don't give Blue players anything in the Pokemon Mansion to compensate! Electabuzz is the complement to Magmar, and Blue gets Raichu to fill those encounter spots. But in Red? They should've given something else! Can't think of what the equivalent would be though... I think Safia's girlfriend was in Mt. Rock, actually... We've been really excited to finish! Hopefully we can wrap things up quickly and nicely!

@@BabusGameRoom Hmm yeah that's tough! I wanted to say it should be something requiring a Firestone for evolution, but it appears that only three of those exist in gen I (Ninetales, Arcanine, and Flareon), and none of them really feel right, I guess because none of them occur in the wild anywhere else, and Ninetales is blue-version-only to boot. Maybe just put in some high-level Rapidash instead of the extra Ponyta that are there? That's the best I can do at least!

@@Cherodar Yeah, I like the Rapidash idea! I went through the same thought process, and giving evolved Growlithes seems inappropriate since its evolved form is a "Legendary" Pokemon, according to the Dex...lol
