He gave Teller the nut from a separate bag. They're probably special _somehow_ (or it would've been a red herring :P ) I was thinking like searchable in a dark light or something but then they showed the camera picture from above and well, it didn't seem like he could do very blatant searching there. I also thought about wrapping or something on the box but... perhaps not. Doesn't seem like magnets would be reliable in the circumstance... Oh well, he says he's gonna spill soon, guess we'll find out.

@@mjrauhal ha funny.. I just commented my alternative theory in a separate comment.... I was thinking maybe he sprayed those peanuts in the bag with glow-in-the-dark coating? The two peanuts look far to similar, so I don't think it's a different peanut. Think about this. Eric mixes the peanuts the first time round for no reason. Why!!!. This could cause a flap to come down an cover the peanuts. second mixing the flap moves back. Maybe the back of the flap has photo of lots of peanuts. Maybe the flap pulls out fake top looking like a box full of peanuts. The peanut just gets caught behind the flap.

The thing that seemed really strange to me is that the peanut Teller selected was from a bag of peanuts that were totally separate to the rest. The suggests to me that it was different in some way, but I have nothing in terms of what the mechanics of the trick might look like after that aside from maybe the ones in the bag had RFID chips or something along those lines (unlikely since Teller may have spotted it). That's probably right. The pieces look similar, but not identical. The one in his mouth has a little bit sticking out to his right (seen at 9:01), while the original didn't have it (seen at 4:51). Also the T (or the 1) looks quite a bit different). He also never showed the one Teller painted on to the camera, to make it more difficult to compare. Did you notice that Teller forgot to mark both sides of the peanut? Then when Eric took the peanut he carefully looked at both sides and gave Teller a look? That made the trick harder because he had to flip the peanut in his mouth, but I think your idea is the best one yet. The first 5 seconds to draw on a peanut, then 5 seconds to get the mask back in place, then 10 seconds to have the overhead camera catch him acting like a goof. No one is going to look too closely at the peanut that's been in his mouth. Very clever....

@@SDesWriter If it was a different peanut, why not show the inside of box before jumping in?
@larrychristensen7766
@larrychristensen7766 4 года назад
My best guess: "Hero" peanut was special. Probably electrically charged. (Think static electricity.) Hero was also probably lighter than the ones in the box. Tongs were insulated to prevent static discharge. Box was shaken before the hero was dropped. Box was shaken again after hero was dropped. Top of box wasn't shown when Eric jumped in. I suspect shaking may have caused the heavier peanuts in the box to settle below a plastic film with holes in it that was just below the top. Film was also probably electrically charged, which would kept the light hero on top of film during the shaking and made it easy to find.

I think it was an electric charge on the peanut placed on it while he was walking towards the box. The last time I played with these peanuts they carried so much electric charge I couldn't throw them into the garbage because they stuck to my hands like glue. The tongs are made of metal and would conduct the charge to the peanut very well. A small battery hidden in the tongs could do the job of charging them. (Rubber soled sneakers are required to prevent peanut grounding, which you can see he is wearing.) The opposite charge would have been hidden inside the front wall of the box, which is why the peanut fell in the direction of P&T. Notice how he covered the front of the box with a flap before inviting Fabian to come back to help him. That would prevent Fabian from seeing the peanut attached to the front wall of the box. When he jumped in he had plenty of time to reach up to grab the peanut and put it into his mouth. This is how I would do this trick. look forward to checking his channel to see if I'm right.

The box is open when he brings it out. While Teller is signing the peanut he closes the box (off camera - hmmm) before he and the audience member/assistant give it a shake. Then he gets the signed peanut from Teller and returns to the box, opens it, then drops the peanut inside. The assistant was sitting at this time, so he wouldn't have been able to see inside the box. The magician then closed one of the flaps before the assistant walked up to where he would be able to see inside. Convenient that there was a chair meant for the assistant to sit where he could not see down into the box during this time. I'm thinking the first time he closed the box a layer (perhaps saran wrap like you said) was drawn over the peanuts, and this layer is withdrawn (with the signed peanut inside) the next time when he closed that first flap before the assistant could see into the box.

And on a peanut its not an exact "signature" because of its contours... and anyone writing a letter would look like a generic "T"...So while during the countdown... He took any peanut.. and with another hidden marker he had on him... Wrote a "T" on a random peanut... Then put it in his mouth... Not as elaborate as it seemed... Also before the end of the video i noticed that he turned the box upsidedown to jump into it... I thought there couldve been a false bottom that only had peanuts with the letter "T" on them...because he knew Teller would just write "T"... But i dont think that at the end... because at the end he did ask Teller to write on BOTH SIDES of it where Teller only wrote on one side... Just sayin... Im upset that P&T didnt think of this as an option...

My theory is similar to the magnetic one, but perhaps one of the containers of glue has a substance to which the "special" peanuts will stick, but ordinary ones won't? Might be harder to make work than magnets, but it would mean the glue would actually serve a purpose. Some of my favorite tricks are the ones where something that seems like a pointless distraction is in fact the honest basis of what makes the trick work.

His magic is often very underrated but his performances are always a hit... as for how he did it,, I believe he put it in his mouth before he even got to the box. great thing with peanuts is they are mostly hydrophobic, so transfer an imprint well .. #onlyaguess

Might he have put a magnet inside that particular packing peanut and hidden a large magnet in the box or in his pocket so that in the first mix or the 18 seconds he was in there, it would stick to the magnet and he could put it in his mouth? Re Aesop, I often see manipulative people who think they're fooling other more decent people but because they don't know what it's like to be genuine, the real genuine people see right through them. Usually they don't even let on but they do protect themselves wisely. So I think the story is accurate.

It was a great performance. I'm thinking all the peanuts in the zip-lock were treated with a UV spray. All he had to do was shine a UV flashlight into the mass of peanuts and that one would glow. That's my best guess!!

I approach each magic trick with Occam's razor in mind. The simplest solution is always the answer. The magician must always surprise his audience and that usually means he must deceive them, often by misdirection, by getting them to assume some kind of trickery -- that he is using a special technique that he developed to fool us. It's that technique that we allege that gets us fooled. The more simple the solution the more elaborate the guesses. In the above case, people considered magnets, special colored packing peanuts, and even specialized glue. The simplest answer is not always the obvious one. Our own egos don't want to believe that we were so easily fooled. So, it must have been elaborate trickery, right? My guess was that he had used a gimmicked pair of tongs that somehow concealedTeller's packing peanut while another peanut was dropped into the box and then the magician merely did a sleight of hand to palm the signed peanut before jumping into the box of packing peanuts. That was my 'simplified' answer. I was fooled, of course. The printed sheet was brilliant and simple. Occam's razor was proved again. I thought outside the box when I should've been thinking inside the box! 😎

@SunsetWingman
@SunsetWingman 4 года назад
You can probably ignore the blindfold since theres so many fake ones. I would think that since he only offered them a limited number of peanuts to choose from, he could have just sprayed them with a clear UV reactive paint. Then since he sent the spectator away he could have just pulled out a UV pen light and looked for the glowing peanut which was just sitting on the top.
@spblc
@spblc 4 года назад
Here is my thought. He asked Teller to write his initial, not random letter. And all capital T's look almost the same, especially being written on peanuts. So he could write T on his peanut, place it into his pocket in advance and reveal it. Nobody would see the difference between Teller's letter T and duplicate letter T. Many people here think he wrote letter inside the box. Yes, it also sounds possible. In case Teller made any special mark on peanut.

There was a loud metallic noise and a weird cut at 5:17 when he drops the peanut in the box. Makes me wonder if maybe the tongs had a contraption to switch out the peanut and the sound effect was added to cover up the noise. If so, that was a gutsy move considering how out in the open it was. Also, I love how Jason flexed both his muscles and his magic in the intro XD

Eric revealed the trick on his RU-vid channel. However, let's assume that the box is gimmicked to find Teller's peanut. What did he need the twenty seconds for? I know the version you watched didn't show it well, but there are other versions that show something hanging out of his pants. Even in the version you watched, you can see him constantly tucking his shirt in. Then, there was a close up of his back where the camera quickly panned away. They've built kind of a fearsome foursome up there in Canada with Eric Leclerc, Wes Barker, Chris Ramsey, and Alex Boyer. It's funny because Chris Ramsey is responsible for pitching and building a lot of the stuff on that TV show. Him and Wes use to have to cut their Bottom of the Barrel podcast short to go to production meetings. Chris fooled Penn and Teller on the old show Wizard Wars, and Wes and Eric have both fooled them on Fool Us, and Alex is scheduled to go on this season (unless things have changed).

my first thought: the peanuts that Teller was offered were in a baggie. not from the box. if every peanut in the baggie had a small steel ball in it, and he had a fairly strong magnet under his jacket on his chest, it would "find" the specific peanut.

This was my thought as well. Not necessarily a steel ball, the general thing could also just be infused with a lot of iron powder or something else that is magnetic.

I wanted to say he had a marker and drew the T in the box, but then i compared the shapes of the initials before 4:51 and after 9:01 and they fit pretty much exactly. Probably same peanut. Possibilities: 1) gimmicked thongs: adding glue or a static charge to the peanut. Not sure how to use it though. Maybe the glue on the peanut is part of a bicomponent glue that would stick really hard to the glue on his clothes, whereas other peeanuts are stuck loosely? 2) gimmicked peanuts: the bag of peanuts actually have a small steel core (needle stuck in it) and the inside wall of the box ( the one we never see, has a magnetic layer, or he has it on himself so that the peanut is attracted and sticks to it. In the second case the glue could be used to secure the peanut in place. Though how would he prevent other peanuts from sticking to the specific place before the right one can? 3) Gravity: different density means stratification ( on top) + glue on hand to catch it during the dive. 4) Compartment: what Pen said. Notice he didn't deny it, he just ignored it and said he dropped the peanut. If there was no compartment he would just have said so. But, again, glue is useless in this scenario. 5) (Speculative) Fluorescence: Peanut is covered in fluorescent die, which can only be used to identify it if they have a uv light somewhere up above and the eye path is actually a blue filter ( one peanut would have a more intense blue hue). Glue is to catch it during the dive. Also not sure if that is how it would actually work, optically. I just cannot figure out a good use for the glue.

As stated below, we need to know what is True. We know there were separate peanuts in their own bag (not just grabbed from the box). We know that the peanut was dropped in with tongs. We know that unlike most packing peanuts now, Tellers is not Water Soliable since it was in his mouth for the reveal. We also know the box, after shaking, was put back upright so that the end the peanut was dropped in was still the top. Even with the shaking, He should have had a very general idea as to where it landed. We also know he needed 20 seconds. We also know there weren't really any whole peanuts stuck to him at the end, mostly crumby residue. This leads me to believe the glue was in fact Water Based Glue, Allowing it to be washed, but also allowing the peanuts to dissolve on contact. He wouldn't need much either, being as the peanut should have been at the top still (give or take). Just a theory for sure! Probably all red herrings and he is actually a witch that needs to be burned.

Having seen how this was done, I lost respect for the performance. In my opinion P&T guessed correctly so he should not have won the trophy, as entertaining as the trick was. They guessed the signed item went into a separate container of some sortm which it did. The performer also said he intended to win respect by not using red herrings etc, but then bragged about doing exactly that in his reveal. This was a fun trick but not really a fooler.

This is an example of designing a trick for the sole purpose of fooling them. Some of the best tricks I’ve seen do NOT fool them and then some simple have multiple ways to do them and thus it’s a roll of the die whether P&T can guess which method was used. But, some of the best tricks do fool them because they are astonishing like Shin and others. This one was simply meant to fool.

I came here after watching the trick and noticed a couple things, first yeah we don’t see the inside of the box after it gets shaken, second we don’t actually see which way the box gets set down so it could have been flipped, I noticed later the bottom of the box is just overlapped flaps like the top instead of being taped, third when he starts running away you see a cloth bunched up around his waistband it’s about the same color as his shirt but it’s a little different, also his pants are a little bulkier than when he started, so I think your idea with the ceranwrap (or however that’s spelled I’ve never actually seen it written) but actually with a cloth to separate the sides of the box and held there just enough so it doesn’t get knocked loose when shaking but so it’ll come away free without any weird tugging once he jumps in, then in the box he stuffs it in his pants after putting the hero into his mouth and the he flounders around for the rest of the time for comedic effect, falling out at the end to really sell the box. EDIT: just read other comments and realized he posted a reveal and it turns out I was spot on! Glad he revealed it and I didn’t guess his routine and spoiled it for people.

I suspect the answer is electricity. Foam maintains a static electic charge well. The metal tongs allowed a charge to put on it (either pos or neg), the foam into box was staged the other charge. Then a concealed plate was charged to attract it. they shook the box, the foam went to the plate and stuck. Then, he jumped in and pulled the foam from the plate, stuck it in his mouth and flopped for the next 18 seconds. That is how I would have done it.

Anyway my observation is that Penn and Teller chose peanuts from a bag, not from the box... And the pincers may have seemed fair but maybe there was a reason to use them... no idea how he did find it. Unless it is different peanut but somehow I do not think it is. We also did not see the blindfold the whole time and it may have been fake blindfold.
