Magnet fishing? This is a VERY important video to watch if you ever plan to go magnet fishing for treasure. I go over three important things you need to know about, and show you how to get the magnet unhooked from the bottom if it gets snagged.

I doubt you'll see this as it's an old video, but a tip for if you get snagged.,.,.. get a cheap speaker ring magnet and wrap it in duct tape as they break easy, or a thick washer made or steel or iron etc, and attach a rock climbing type cheap clip to it.... when you snag, clip the metal ring onto your rope hold the rope up so it slides down to the snag, just a little flick will get over any hurdles, and the magnet will spring out of the snag and stick to the metal ring. Works everytime.

Good video I have a thought about how you may improve on your magnet. If you find a plastic funnel and a tube of silicone( exterior calking of any type would work fine I'm sure. Cut the wide end of the funnel to the same size as the magnet and the small end the same as the screw shaft on the mag. Because of the eye you would also need to cut down the length of the funnel.(if the eye on your magnet were smaller then it may be slipped over the eye by only cutting a small silt at the small end and feeding the rope through) Now slip the funnel in place and sue tape to reseal the cut. Next tape it to the magnet temporarily while filling the funnel with the silicone. Let it cure for as long as necessary to allow the silicone to set totally, I would think 3-4 weeks in a warm dry location (you don't want it in your living space as it probably isn't good to breath the fumes that will come off) I don't do magnet fishing as there is little to no chance of finding much where I live. I do think this would work well and prevent a lot of hang ups GL&HH I really hope this helps someone.

Seeing this video makes me thing it might also help to put a 16 ounce soda bottle on the line to cover the knot and eyebolt. That might just reduce the chances of getting stuck.

Hey Beau, my older brothers taught me all about knots and this is the lesson they taught, you first start with two half hitches and then you put a Son of a B, in it. Yip that knot tightens 101. Thanks always.

@aspudkicker

Hi Beau. Mostly good advice. The only thing different I would suggest is, attach the rope to something on the river bank, not yourself. Theres always something to attach to, wether its a tree, railing, old person or small child, just look around and see. So far I've mostly found rubbish, but I've started doing research so hopefully next year, I will find something a little bit more interesting. I opted for climbing rope with a breaking strain of 3500kg doubled up, how you tie your knot, and checking the condition of the rope is important. If all is well, I will break before my rope does. Stay safe, healthy, happy, contented and making youtube videos my friend. Happy new year.

HI Beau , Nice informative video once again. While looking at your magnet and hook assembly i had an idea that could help minimise its tendency to snag itself. I guess by putting the hook straight trough one of those orange plastic ball , like the one that kids play hockey with, it would divert most object from the flat spot of the magnet. Just a random idea but i ghuess it might work good with your magnet assembly. :) YMMV .

Easiest way to get magnet or fishing lure back. Have extra rope on hand for this tie a 2 liter bottle 3/4 full of water close as you can to magnet stuck in the water on the magnet fishing rope have and then tie another line if need for enough to throw the bottle of water in another direction thus pulling the magnet in a direction that you could not otherwise access without some sort of watercraft or getting wet. This hasnt failed yet for getting my magnets unstuck. Great video by the way and great tips.

I have learned a great trick from bass fishing fishing that may apply to magnet fishing. When snagged i get the line taught and pull and pop it immediately followed by slack. The pop travels down the line and the frees the lures and the slack allows it to fall. Takes a while to master but 60% of the time it works 100% of the time.

UK Fire Services handbook states the properties of a good knot are - 1. Should be easy to tie and easy to untie. 2. Should not damage the line. 3. Must serve the purpose for which it was designed. Mechanical abrasion is the enemy of all lines. Mildew is the enemy of natural fibre lines. My own suggestion is this;. do not use any line for too long as damage can be invisible to the named eye. Test it with a given weight pull before use. With a set length of line reverse it so it is connected at the other end for half its life. Dry the line naturally after use. We tested lines to the extreme and always treated them with great care as our lives and the public's lives depended on them. Our rescue lines were tested by gradually applying the pull of six men to each end of the line followed by a visual inspection. Your magnet fishing line will see harder and more constant use than most rescue lines sonic you don't want to lose that very expensive magnet be kind to your line. Just to be a little pedantic you are not using a ROPE. A role is a measure of length during manufacture. Ropes were made on 'ropewalks' and are 720ft long. Any length cut from a 720ft 'rope' is known as a 'line'. Not that it matter; just one of those useless bits of information firefighters are taught.

Here’s a trick we use when snagged while river fishing in northwest that works 90% of the time. Carry a “retriever” that you make in advance. Take a small buoy, jug, or plastic bottle and tie it to a short piece of p-cord. On the other end of the p-cord, tie on a carabiner type of clip. When you’re snagged, walk upstream as far as you can, then clip the retriever onto your snagged line and let the retriever it float as far as it can so it’s above the snag. One sharp tug will usually free it up.
@tymesho
@tymesho 8 лет назад
the few I've snagged up, I buried the rope to hide it,and came back with another length with a giant snagging treble and was able to yank it out. sometimes though, the river wins. no matter how careful, you will lose rigs.

Good video +Beau Ouimette but possibly 2 suggestions for you. 1. No matter how you tie poly line you can never keep it from untying eventually. The proper way to to attach poly line to say an anchor or a magnet requires a splicing fid. It never weakens the rope and makes it similar to one of those Chinese finger locks the kids play with. The more pressure you apply to pull your fingers out the tighter it gets. A splicing fid uses the same principle and if done properly the rope will never come off the item. The fids are maybe a whole dollar and come in sizes that match the rope. There are plenty of videos to show how to properly use a fid. 2.Before attaching the rope find a plastic cone about the same size as the base of the magnet, side it over the rope and then fid the rope to the magnet. That will at least take care most of the tangles. It will allow the cone to work it's way past the snag before the magnet gets stuck. These are just some old boating tricks and would probably work for the magnets too! Happy New Year!
@joescurti2070
@joescurti2070 5 лет назад
I saw a video where this guy used a plastic bottle cut the bottom off to the point that just the magnet bottom would stick out and it would stop 90% of his snags because the bottle top would just slip over most of all magnet catching problems and the ring for the rope would stop the bottle from slipping down to cover the magnet, very good little trick, enjoy it friends.

A few wee tips...spray or paint your magnet...non magnetic side with high viz paint so you can see it better in murky water...mark your rope every meter so you know what depths/distances you are working with...always take your "magnetic stones/rocks" home and check them for meteorites/meteorwrongs...I have one...there are a few test you can carry out if you google it...and you could try fixing a plastic bottle to the non magnetic side of your magnet so it has buoyancy so it always lands magnetic side down in the riverbed etc, Thanks for sharing,

The braided rope you used in this video is for halters for livestock. They make a plastic threading like a needle that the cord is slipped into and you can attach to whatever you want to by threading the plastic needle up through the center of the braided cord slipping it back out through the braided cord exiting 4 or 5 inches. Then you can burn the end of the braided cord so it will not fray.. Thin braided through the inside of the cord produces a Chinese finger effect eliminating a knot while securing whatever you are fastening it to. Just a suggestion! Love your channel. Fred Holwell

I use strong magnets for my work. I was pretty sure I broke my finger between two of them one time. It calmed down to just incredibly painful after about 3 hours, not broken. The other thing I was warned about is, if you get the magnet near your workbench, it will clear all your tools off in half a second. If your hand is in the way, anything sharp will go through it. Luckily, I haven't done that one. My friend got his treasure magnet stuck to an iron bridge. That was really funny to watch!
