I’ve gotten a few questions about basing units for the Song of Ice & Fire, so put together a quick video as I’m adding to my Free Folk army.
You can see how to paint Free Folk in this style here: • Bear Riders! Painting ...
My basing grit is a 50/50 mix of Woodland scenics fine and medium ballast. You can probably get some from your local game or train hobby store (or from the Amazon links below).
Make sure to get zinc (galvanized) washers - not all stainless steel washers play nice with magnets.
For magnets, look for 2mm thick neodynium magnets. 4mm, 6mm, or 8mm wide discs all work. The larger the diameter, the stronger they’ll be: pick which one suits your fancy

Woodland Scenics Medium Brown Ballast: amzn.to/3wzH421
1" Zinc Fender Washers: amzn.to/3izp0wJ
Magnets:
4x2mm: amzn.to/3LfrlZU
6x2mm: amzn.to/36oX10l
8x2mm: amzn.to/3JEZ5Qg

Can’t wait to make my friends do this for me because I am not nearly craft enough.

Ha! It's not that tricky, but working with super glue does take a little practice. Working with white glue is easier and basically follows the same idea: just prime the minis and unit tray first, before adding the glue. White glue is also more forgiving, since it cleans up with water.

It definitely makes setting up games and transporting armies a LOT faster and easier!

Probably a silly question but I noticed you glued the magnets towards the sides of the bases, if they were centred I imagine they wouldn't magnetise to the washers effectively?

That's right. When using washers with a hole in the middle, it works better to have the magnets away from the center of the base.

What are the dimensions of the plastic container you’re using to transport the army?

It's an 11L box from "Really Useful Box". It's about 17x14 inches. Hopefully that helps!

What glue are you using?

The hot glue on the bottom is "Gorilla" brand. The super glue is DAP "Rapid Fuse". Gorilla Glue makes an "Impact Tough Super Glue XL" which is also good. If I'm gluing material to bare plastic, I"ll use some sort of super glue. If you're using textured paints, like the ones from Vallejo or GW, I'd prime the plastic first.
