The Magnum opened on the 18th of September 1976 and closed on the 30th December 2016, this video has some of the highs and lows of the Magnums history, thanks to all who contributed, making this video possible.
I've tried to squeeze as much information in the 6 minutes or so as possible, that's why there is so much text with not much time to read all in one go.
Most of the chart music used has been removed for copyright reasons.
One name is synonymous with the entertainment at the Magnum over the years, Willie Freckleton it's only fitting that this video is dedicated in his memory, many of the big name/famous artists that appeared at the Magnum was due to Willie "Mr Entertainment" and his team.
Freckfest is a charitable organisation, voluntarily run by a small group of music enthusiasts. Named in honour of Willie Freckleton (link below) our main aim is to revive a flagging local music scene.

As an Irvine man the Magnum was a big part of my life growing up from a child. Was there the first night it opened (I was 4yrs old) An excellent video! I would like to add 2 more fact about the Magnum. 1) It was the largest leisure centre in Europe when it opened in 1976 2) The council launched a competition open to the local schools to name the new leisure centre and as they say, the rest is history.

should not have been closed down. Half the money it cost to build the new equivalent in the town centre could have refurbished the full magnum. it is was far bigger, better & easier to park at. seems more like the council will be selling off prime real estate with sea view. watch this space/place

I spent so much time here growing up, I learned to swim here, also learned Tae Kwon Do as a teenager. I would bike or sometimes walk from Barassie.

carsos00 A real shame. Have very fond memories of staying with my cousins in Dreghorn during school summer holidays in the 80s/90s and our trips to the Magnum were undoubtedly the highlight. Loved the flumes and was ridiculously excited when the Space Bowl was added. Your video is a nice record of the place.

Thanks, such a shame things ended the way they did for the Magnum, in the last years of its life, from the biggest and best leisure centre in Europe to the run down neglected building it was in the end.. So many opportunities lost, but so many great memories for others.

Such a huge shame. It was over the day they closed the flumes and space bowl; the beginning of the end. I had so many good memories in the Magnum that will never be replaced. I want to say "youngsters nowadays will never know what it was like to have such a great attraction" (and I'm only 26!) but it's not even about "youngsters", it's people of all ages who are missing out because of council incompetence and idiocy. Such a sad sad day when I took my son for his last swimming lesson at the Magnum on Tuesday. So sad.

I will be the last person to play squash on the 30th (slot all ready booked), in-fact was playing squash there on Tuesday morning, as you say so sad and a huge shame.

there was a competition to name he flumes held involving the primary schools in irvine a class mate of mine at the glebe primary robert harkins names were picked they were the magnum maelstrom ,red rocket and blue bomber so we won the prize and were the 1st to use them this was when the 2 flumes went in to the 1 splash pool it was later change in to a seperate part for each flume everyone had found memories of the magnum including me and my kids and i for 1 was sad to see it go

i was only 8 when this got knocked down, it was my childhood i miss it so much, i would go there nearly every saturday of my live i was heartbroken when it happened im missing it loads, it shouldnt have been knocked down..

Many others will ask the same question for a long time, I'm quite sure the ground the magnum occupies has been spoken for and probably quite some time ago.

Amazing video! ....an absolute disgrace that a building like this was left to rot and be demolished instead of invested in for future generations. We will never see anything like the magnum again. Everything they design and build now is so bland in comparison

Thanks!, Once Europe's biggest sports complex and the jewel in the crown Scotlands future in what could be done under one roof, and you are also 100% right, we will never see anything like the Magnum again in Irvine anyway!! now it's all about how much will it make, and not what matters for the good...

I've always wanted to ride the space bowl but I never managed I've been to the magnum all my life it was amazing but there are some things that make the portal but there are somethings that makes the magnum better

Thanks Ali, Yeah the people at the Council who managed the magnum couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag are solely responsible for its demise, as for the music youtube blocked the video after they got a copyright notification for wuthering heights by kate bush and informed me I would have to remove it, so went into the youtube online editor and remove that and most of the others that had copyright issues/risks, other copyright holders were monitoring the video's activity but kate bush wanted it blocked... so she got the boot!!!..

Sorry this centre might have been great for Irvine but kids from the 3 towns had to take at least 3 buses to get to it !

For starters the stairwell was in poor condition (corrosion) and required extensive repairs and secondly there was a legal requirement to constantly have 2 attendants one at the top and one at the bottom at all times while the flumes were in operation, so our (highly efficient council!!) probably decided let the stairwell continue to corrode until such time it is so bad and unsafe we have to close the flumes..then we can get rid of 2 from the pay roll and save even more money, that way someone high flying exec gets a bonus for saving money rather than doing there job for the public's interest.......maybe i'm being too cynical and that's not what happened at all ;).

An excellent record of the Magnum at its prime and in its decline. Its sheer size is impressive - the new Magnum is tiny by comparison.

A dump from 76 till 2016, had about as much atmosphere as that other white elephant the big Idea. Was like flogging a dead horse to put it on thd map as an extraordinary venue..
