Great review! There's only one Thomas Sullivan Magnum and his name is Tom Selleck! That cast was perfection. A tight knit band of brothers that helped each other become better men as the series progressed. Haven't been seen before or since on tv. The chemistry between Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick could never be replicated.
Thank you for the early review of this long anticipated Blu-ray set! You mentioned the Murder She Wrote crossover episode not being included (“Magnum on Ice”), but I did not hear any discussion about the Simon & Simon crossover episode “Emeralds are not a Girl’s Best Friend.” The original Universal DVDs, the individual digipack seasons, included both of these episodes (the DVD box set seen in this video only includes the Murder She Wrote crossover and omits the Simon & Simon episode), so it’s a shame Mill Creek couldn’t also provide these. But I get it, I’m sure they simply didn’t have the ability to license them, and also why they were able to include the two Rockford episodes (albeit in lower picture quality) with Tom Selleck.

Probably the best TV show ever made, the carachter arc in the 8 season run is so well written, which wasn't common at the time (and sure, there are bad seasons in between but still), great cast, chemistry, themes... pity it's 200euros here in the EU (like 250 US dollars!) otherwise it would be mine already.
I'm gonna get it on DVD. not the one that has double sided discs. The one I'm getting is the re-release that has the really thick cases that has double stacked discs with out the bonus features.
I bought all 8 seasons on Apple TV (from apple) for 24.99. Not sure if they still have that offering. The picture is extremely good and the colors spot on. I compared it to one episode which I had bought on google play movies and the apple version had more (better) saturated colors and the grain was more natural to the eye. I am wondering how the apple streaming version would compare to the blu ray. Since it’s low resolution to begin with o can’t imagine it being much better.
My Magnum P.i came in yesterday and Im very happy with the set. I wish the Stargate SG1 was in a clam shell case because I would buy that in a heartbeat.
After look at review, going pick this set up. Classic fans we need support this release and encourage studios see can put more classic on blue-ray. Also release out print media as well.

there was a rumor that Jack Lord was offered to appear in the Magnum P.I. Pilot. but decline. after 12 season of 5-O I don't blame him. he pretty was pretty much done with playing Steve McGrarret.
Excellent review..... I'm not sure I like them better than the UK version I've owned for some time but I've only watched a bit. BTW... I still think the Mill Creek absolute best series is The Shield.... massive amounts of bonus features great widescreen remastering..... but this is fun to have region 1 and I do appreciate the packaging, there is even a fun photo INSIDE the box that houses the three packages.

Amazing review, thanks! I am pleasantly surprised that Mill Creek didn't overstuff the discs and actually took advantage of the format. That's a major plus and justifies the higher than usual (for them) price. What IS a bummer is that the 2 hour movies are in "2 part" format. Those usually lead to missing or re-shuffled scenes and credits where they don't belong. I don't mind them as a bonus feature and would have preferred that to Rockford Files episodes, but not having the original two hour versions is an omission that may have me hanging onto my DVDs.
I believe Universal created these HD masters for streaming and for broadcast TV years ago, which explains the focus on the standard one-hour versions of all episodes, but I agree, I would have loved to have the original presentation.
@@CerealAtMidnight yikes that doesn't bode well for shows like SeaQuest which got a very nice remastering and are streaming, but have the two hour premieres in separate parts. Depending on whoever gets the physical release rights, of course. If it's Kino Lorber, it'll be fine but not a budget outfit like Mill Creek. I'll still upgrade to blu but I guess hold onto the DVDs for completion sake. Thanks!!!
I know this is minor but they didn't go with the original jazzy intro for the pilot . It would have been nice if they just released it with that original intro, it was only used for the pilot but still would be nice . Can anyone verify if the other blu ray releases have it uncut?
The alternate jazzy music is present in season one starting with episode 3 (which I guess is really episode 2, since the first two episodes were shown as a feature-length pilot) and runs through around episode 11, I believe. From what I've read, that's exactly how these episodes aired. The pilot had the music we all know and love, but the next episode introduced the jazzy score. I suspect this will the the same on all releases worldwide, since these masters are coming directly from Universal.

Heath, really happy to see you contrast the quality with the older DVD boxset (which I own), and this Blu-ray set (which I'm considering). Also great to have you report on the bit-rate. One correction though... when you say 20-25 megabytes per second, that should be megaBITS. I suspect you already know that, but you said it wrong 4 times in the first 90 secs, so I'm chiming in here. ;)
Yep, and I want to say that I'll never mispronounce it again but I'm getting older and I can't make that promise! I still mispronounce Ultraman TV shows that I've watched in their entirety. But I'm trying!

Hi Cereal, are all the episodes the complete episodes with full running times?? I heard there are some episodes that are shortened on the DVD set, but I don't know about this set.
I want to get the DVD version as the blu ray is just too expensive, but not too bothered. Problem I have is that here in the UK for reasons I can't find an answer for we get only get 157 episodes are not the full 162. Why? no idea. So for us what I can figure out (and please correct me if I'm wrong) we are missing the Murder She Wrote episode, the Simon & Simon two parter and oddly Echoes Of The Mind Parts 1 & 2 and read all these are only on the region 1 releases. So looking around I found one release which seems to include these episodes, and that is a 2018 release which states has 162 episodes. But seeing this new 2022 DVD released the episodes have been remastered. So I would like the 2018 release with everything but is the picture quality still decent or is the transfer no good, or should I forget about that release and go for the new 2022 remaster. Can anyone help?
Looks great-is it region free though? Also-a real shame after putting so much effort into the presentation of the discs and special features with interviews with MIke Post, etc but not to get any involvement from Tom Selleck. To have his involvement would have been great-an episode commentary or something. Amazing that a golden opportunity like this could be missed. I think Selleck just hangs out at his avocado farm now. I'd just hang around his front gates and offer him 5, 000 bucks to sit and watch an episode. But make it a two parter! Then you get double for your money. LOL Also-Tom is not the only Magnum link in those Rockford Files episodes. Larry Manetti who played Rick is also in those Rockford Files episodes shown on the Magnum blu ray.
Don't quote me, but I'm fairly sure Selleck was approached. Daniel Griffith leaves no stone unturned, but getting some of these guys to actually sit down and talk about their past glories can be a real challenge. Not necessarily connecting this to Selleck, but you wouldn't believe what some celebrities demand in fees for a single interview. Not sure if it's region free or not, though all the discs do say Region A. I know Europe has a very nice 37-disc Blu-ray set that was released in 2019, I believe, and are most likely the exact same transfers on even more discs.
@@CerealAtMidnight Great review - I have the UK release and we do have 37 discs but zero extras, Rockford episodes or Murder, She Wrote eps. Not sure I can justify importing the new set, but maybe one day. Such a good series, it stands up better than many of those 80s action shows. I tried to get an interview with Selleck for an 80s action zine I'm working on for release later this year (hopefully!) and almost got one before it fell through. He does have an autobiography due out in 2023, though the release date keeps getting pushed back. Check out Larry Manetti's book about his work on the show, lots of nice behind the scenes stories in that.
@@JonathanMelville Wow-I had no idea Selleck had written an autobiography. Amazing! I actually read an article on him in a vintage copy of TV Times, which was a British TV magazine (still running today). Anyway, I read the copy which came out at the time of Magnum first debuting on TV screens in the UK in the 80s and the article is very candid. He talks about all sorts of thing including his previous marriage (it may have been his current marriage at the time), he and his wife's struggles with starting a family, his lack of work/success as an actor. You would never hear such personal revolutions from a big time actor now. Anyway, Selleck has always been a big favourite of mine. I would love to know about his experiences on Runaway (a personal favourite of mine) and Lassiter. And of course, Magnum PI! Oh, and how the heck he survived the crash with his son when his son drove off the edge of a car park in the 80s. That was insane. You can find articles about that at Magnum Mania. Anyway, looking forward to the book.
@@ben8447 I'm a big Selleck fan too and also the late great Robert Urich and James Garner. They don't make stars like these guys anymore. All are super talented and good looking badasses but down to earth, humble and just decent. I just wish before John Hillerman passed we could've gotten a Magnum, PI reunion. I read how there were supposed to be Magnum movies in the 90's with Tom being involved but the scripts were so bad and Tom had to reject most of them and it never worked out. That really sucks because Magnum fans deserve to see Thomas and the gang at Robin's Nest again.

Great review! One question however: Can you say anything about the known issue of changing quality (sharpness) which is evident on the UK BR release for example? The thing is that most of season 1 and 2 look amazing, yet later a lot of episodes look far less brilliant/ sharp (more like 720p/DVD resolution). It often changes from one episode to the next, one looks great the next looks much less sharp, as if they only had lower-quality transfers to work with for these episodes. This is especially noticeable when you compare S1E8 ("The Ugliest Dog In Hawaii"-overall great 1080p quality) with pretty much any episode from S8 (looks almost like video transfer to me- clearly not real 1080p) for example. Would be great if you could check whether it's the same with this set! Maybe they used better source material/transfers from Universal here? I guess it's not very likely but it sure would be a great improvement! Of course any BR set is better than the DVDs and it's great that one is now available in the US too! But this issue has been a little annoying so far, and being a true magnum-maniac I'm looking for the ultimate best version of course 😅
Prior to my review, I had jumped around to many discs to check quality and didn't notice a huge downturn in quality or in the bits per second of each episode, but what we may be seeing in what you're describing is the upturn of editing TV on video tape during the later run of the show. When I get some time, I'll try to check some of those later episodes again now that I've spent many hours with season 1. As you say, Universal probably provided Mill Creek with the same transfers that they provided the UK, but it does bear a second look!
@@CerealAtMidnight Thank you for your reply! That would be great if you could check this sometime. What you're saying is what I thought at first too: that they just did the later seasons on video. However, to my knowledge, this was not the case for MPI. As far as i know, all seasons were done on film. But the main thing that is so strange with the UK BRs here in europe is that there isn't a clear cut and all seasons from there on look like this. No- there are episodes in the very same season that look great (1080p) and then some that look low-res-video-like. This is seemingly random. So, if it was really down to editing on video, why are these jumps in quality also happening between episodes in one season and not just from, say S3 onwards? It wouldn't make any sense to master some episodes on 35mm film and then randomly some on video in one season. So the only explanation for me then is that they only had transfers from different sources for some episodes because some of the originals were not available to them. In any case, I haven't seen something like it anywhere else. Normally the quality is pretty consistent throughout one season.
So I have the new US set now and have checked myself. And I'm very happy to report the issue seems to be resolved! All episodes I tested so far look great and those that appeared soft, lacking detail on the UK set now are in nice, clear 1080p quality. Plus: Colors are much, much better. There has been some denoising, but personally I think in this specific case it was the right move because on the UK set some scenes, especially dark scenes, had extreme noise that was a little bit distracting. So, to sum up: Amazing! I'm very happy with it. Definitely would reccomend, especially if you're watching on a large screen.
Is the BR quality much better than the DVD? I'm not sure if I should buy the DVD release or the BR one. BR one is like twice the price of the DVD pack. Plus I'd have to buy a BR player. :D EDIT: I bought both DVD and BR edition. I'm keeping the Blu-ray one, much better quality than DVD, highly recommended for every Magnum fan. :)
I assume it is the same transfer, but I don't have the Region B release to compare. I doubt Universal has created new transfers since 2019, but they do look really, really good.
Great review! Now the deal breaker for me: Does this feature subtitles? I do own the UK set but not being a native speaker makes it sometimes difficult to understand everything.
I bought the box set from Amazon and quite a few discs were scratched up on the bottom. I sent it back for a replacement and it just arrived yesterday and every other disc is scratched on the bottom. Looks like they are getting lazy during the manufacturing process.
the two episodes I've watched have the classic theme song from episode 12 onward, not the original disco theme. I'm sure these are the syndicated masters from Universal, packaged for consistency. The Murder She Wrote crossover episode is also the syndicated version that doesn't end on a cliffhanger.
@@CerealAtMidnight That crossover is, however, included (in both parts) on the second season Simon and Simon DVD release from Shout!, on Disc 1 of that release. The listing for the Simon part, however, has it airing two days before the Magnum part, even though the Simon part aired right after Magnum on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1982 on CBS.
Universal "take such good care of their masters" ? Have you checked the bionics in the last 15 years and current bluray screw up ? It's cheap of the distributor to release the bonus "Selleck" episodes in lower quality... You should be hard on Mill Creek for releasing the syndicated version rather than the original broadcast instead of praising their cheap shortcuts.
I haven't seen any syndicated versions in the set. I'm not saying there aren't any, but to my knowledge, every episode is pushing 50 minutes. Also, Mill Creek can only release what they're given by Universal. If there are some episodes that aren't the full broadcast version, that's on Universal, not Mill Creek. Too many people are angry at distributors who have absolutely no authority in these matters and accusing them of things that are completely outside their control. This is the biggest, most ambitious Mill Creek TV on Blu-ray set in the company's history and it's pretty rad, especially for its price point. The fact that they paid for new interviews shows that they went above and beyond. The pros FAR outweigh the cons.
