Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, billionaire and philantropist, faced off against the World Chess Champion - Magnus Carlsen during the talkshow “Skavlan” in 2014, recorded in a studio in London. Carlsen started with 30 seconds on his clock, and Gates with 2 minutes - by the time he’d win the game, Carlsen would only up 12 of those seconds!

For those who are wondering, the "12 seconds" refer to the total time it took Magnus to make all of his own moves according to the chess clock. Gate's moves are counted separately. That's why it's "12 seconds" despite the video being over a minute.

@@ashscott6068 i labeled your shortcomings as "perceived" in order to be polite. i'm implying that you're a decent person deep down, but deeply troubled, and with a self-esteem that could be knocked down with a feather ("feather" being things like "someone calling you out in a RU-vid comment section"). this isn't armchair psychology - i've known tons of people exactly like this. people with your kind of mindset aren't confident geniuses even though every single one of them claims to be - they're insecure and hurting from some trauma in their lives. if i were wrong, you would've picked up on what i meant by "perceived" instead of trying to turn it into a flex. see instead of analyzing the words, your brain defaults to "this person is challenging me" "how can i put this person down?" "i know, they used the word PERCEIVED in a weird way!" "i know, they SCROLLED DOWN too far!" anybody familiar with cluster b personality symptoms will notice this right away. no matter what i say you're going to take it as some ruthless attack on your character, but my hope is that by _pointing it out_ instead of smugly lording it over you (which you already tried to do to me twice in your comment, might i remind you), you'll at least consider what i'm saying. this isn't sustainable. you can't just do this forever, something's gotta give, and you know that deep down. and i know that you know that i'm not just talking about two isolated RU-vid comments. i'm telling you there's help.

It was Paul Morphy, greatest chess player of his time, who said "The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life". This was said, of course, before top players were making millions of dollars or before anyone was making any money at all from chess outside of gambling, but it just goes to show that it takes a lot of time and dedication to be good at chess, something Bill Gates obviously isn't interested in, it's not just about smarts.

Gates was very lucky, but he's also very smart. The way he and Norman founded Microsoft can't be achieved by an average person. They were freshman in college back in the 70s, claimed to have a compiler (they didn't), set up a meeting to demonstrate the compiler and wrote the compiler in 3 weeks. It was purchased, then they dropped out of college to do a startup. A person with average intelligence in the 70s can't make that happen, no matter how hard they work.
