There's like a 7 minute diversion about True Romance in this chess video. Suspicious.

So classics were indeed right. Caro Kann is all pawns and no hope.

Fedoseev is active and attacking? Wtf he play the Caro-Kann for? He needs a win with black and he plays the Caro-Kann? Ridiculous.

@Steve Brown could've fooled me.

Um..What? Caro has some sharp variations. Thats what you need when its a MUST WIN game and you have black. As Ben said, Magnus isnt really a Caro specialist. Overall it was a gamble and it failed miserably Most variations of Caro are just solid for black, where he can just sit and chill..maybe thats why youre surprised
@kmarasin
@kmarasin 3 года назад
@Steve Brown Then so is Ben, going by his reactions. Did we even watch the same game? Black NEVER had an opportunity to play actively, and it wasn't even because he played badly, white just said "I know you want active play and you can't have it" and steered the game into calm theoretical waters. If you need a win with black and white plays e4, you play the Sicilian. White can't steer his way out of that. Even the closed lines offer better chances to black than Fedoseev had after about move 4.

@@dakid2323 every opening has sharp variations, but to play most of them, both sides have to agree to enter. As black, at the GM level, if you want active play without white's agreement, the Caro-Kann is the wrong opening to play. To my mind the Sicilian is the only response to e4 that forces white to play actively to maintain an advantage and keep the initiative. There are no variations where white can just sit on a position and wait for black to overextend.
@dakid2323
@dakid2323 3 года назад
@kmarasin True. But the forcing responses to E4 at move one are: Scandi, French, Sicilian, Caro(lets ignore the goofy ones) I think we can agree scandi and french are out for a must win against Magnus. As Ben said, maybe Fedoseev thought he had a better chance surprising Magnus in Caro than in sicilian. Hes just more prepared in the sicilian. Truth hurts Also in advanced Caro, whether you play 3...Bf5 or not, you can jam in c5 to enter sharp territory. You dont need white to accomodate you. Yes white can chill and defend well, or can just roll over you; but this would be the way youd wanna shoot your shot
