As a boy in London in the 50s and 60s it was Paul Robeson that everyone knew as regards singing Spirituals. What a voice, the same with Mahalia, also such DIGNITY. Later, it was the old Black blues musicians from the 20s and 30s which we loved. Back to Gospel singing, Blind Willie Johnson stands out, for me. Oh, Rev Gary Davis as well.
Around 13 years ago, I was befriended by a black woman who was old enough to be my mother. She became my very best friend. She bought my grandson baby formula when I didn't have a dime, loaned me her beautiful clothes when I had job interviews, and was there to hold my hand when I had all of my teeth pulled out.. She introduced me to Mahalia Jackson - she said her mother used to listen to her all the time. I was just thinking of my friend when this video popped up. I sure miss you, Dot - r.i.p.

I truly believe that Mahalia Jackson was a human musical instrument with direct communication with God. That woman had a set of lungs on her absolutely the best singer in of all time
She is the best, my favorite is In the upperroom. My father was a great fan of her, he learns my sister and me to listen to it preciated. heavenly voice
President Pat... according to the gospel history books, Mahalia was one of the most influential singers in the History of Music. I had the pleasure of meeting one of her friends who move in our state. Also, I had an uncle who knew her very well, she mentions him in one of her biographies. He related that Mahalia was a very down to earth person, gifted with an anointing like no other singer. The church people said that she was one of the anointed gospel singers in the vain of Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith and Sister Queen Anderson. Anyway, enjoyed your presentation.
Thank you so much. I can see that about her for sure. Even though I am reacting to her videos I can honestly feel her emotions in these performances. I think since I am truly open to receive the music I can get the true feelings the singer brings to the songs. That performance took a lot of emotions out of me. I took a few moments after the video to weep. So, I am just so grateful for the work she left behind for us. :)
Any Concert recordings, like I collected from her european concerts together since 1961 from the public radio - and tv - stations. Elijah Rock is very impressing from her 61 Hamburger Musikhalle concert, with 2 reprises, she s tromelling her hand on the grand piano. The Bavarian TV-station had lost her 61 recordings from Munich through a water damage and I remember one, it seemed to bee a rehearsal she did in a smaller hall ´In the great gettin´ up morning, fare thee well, fare thee well..., got only a cut from it in a tv documentation on Mahalia from the early 1980ies . It is a quite rare song . Unfortunately not so much concert material from US concerts to find for me, I guess , you must have some special relations to the stations there. But her attorney`s office in the states as well as the public tv stations here in Europe, have been very kind and politely to help me the last 30 years, only the recordings from Sweeden and Paris are still missing.
Beautiful and legendary voice. Elvis Presley and Mahalia Jackson were close friends. Both came up in the church in a different era. Would have been pure magic to watch them perform this one on stage together. Duets between huge names like theirs just didnt happen then, moreso because of their management and the record company execs but MAAAAN..... that would have been Gospel for the Ages!
Yes, that would have been such a powerful duet. :) Being that I just really discovered how brilliant Elvis is as a singer I can see that duet happening. Such a shame that it never happened. However, I am happy that I have a chance to watch these videos and performances by both of them before I leave this Earth. If anything I hope that by reacting to these artist it keeps there names alive and new people are exposed to the great work. And not by what the media paints.

With so much information everywhere these days, the truth can be easily accidentally overlooked, ignored, hidden, or altered. Thank goodness for reactors like yourself for seeking the facts. I was 17 years old at the time.

No one sings this like Mahalia!!!!!!!!!!! You feel every word out of her mouth! When she sings you hear that it's a prayer, that's the emotion that I feel is lacking in the Elvis rendition. Gone almost 50 years and there's still no voice to compare!!!!
