My dog definitely was able to recognize the trombone solo from Bolero. At first he would make this high pitched moan when I got to the highest notes. After a while, just playing the first note would set him off. It got to the point where even if I played it very softly down an octave he would recognize the tune and start to hum along.

I took viola lessons for many years from this sweet lady who had a gorgeous black poodle named Winston that always dramatically howled at the top of his lungs when I played a piece in C Major (he was the sweetest and softest dog). My teacher explained to me that many animals (and people) have what is called a “trigger note”, which is a specific tone or noise that sets off many feelings or alarms in someone’s head. Everyone’s perception of sound is different, and some ears can tolerate some noises better than others. For example, some people can handle the THX sound better in D Natural than C# (like me). We associate tones in music to things in real life that correlate with the emotion getting across. The dogs in this video looked just as triggered as Winston would get.
@cathymarie8304
@cathymarie8304 2 года назад
My trigger is country music, I will immediately turn it off…
@Dodecatone
@Dodecatone Год назад
I don't think it has to do with that note (or that specific frequency anyways, when he's playing the scales he lingers on that C# a few times and the dog doesn't react). I'd agree with a different comment which theorizes that the dog anticipates the end of the trumpet solo (which is loud and shrill) and reacts accordingly.

Not necessarily...touch is just as much a comforting tool to dogs and cats as it is to humans. Thats like saying talking to them is a reward; it depends on the dog, whatever else you're doing at the time (laughing tells the dog youre happy with them for instance) and the context. Puppies sleep on top of each other, momma dogs will lick their pups to calm them (and herself) down, thunder jackets are fitted to snugly hold your dog and decrease anxiety, etc. In this instance, if the dog felt encouraged, he wouldn't stop howling, he'd continue and get louder. My dog stopped growling at the mailman because I'd comfort him by talking to and petting him. He'll give a little startled woof now but hasnt growled in...years I think. If he felt rewarded, like I said, he wouldn't have stopped the behavior. Now it CAN be a reward, but you have to train them to see it that way and honestly...easier and less confusion to train them to respond to a clicker, if you're going that route.

He would always sing along (and to that song, only - although he liked to sing when the telephone rang, too, if you want to call that a song). The strange thing is that you could state the lyrics in flat, normal speech, and he'd react the same way. Do whatever you like to disguise it, take pains not be "saying it to him", any disguised form of the song at all, and he'd throw his head back and go all micro-wolf.

@@kevinbissinger What about the way I described it sounds like bullshit? And why? I find it strange that you would think you can read that into what I said. I get that you might not like people messing around with words beyond your toleration limits, but there's a long way to go beyond finding someone else's way of expressing themselves irritating (like someone might get irritated if someone refused to use capital letters where appropriate, for instance - doesn't bug me, but I bet it bugs some people just as badly as my "bullshit") to thinking they're lying. I object, Yer Honour. Thanks for giving the song's name. I'll probably forget it again until the next time I'm reminded of this Jack Russell person. (I can tell you some more lies about him. He was a world champion Cobra Killer. He had a known score of 15:2 . Victorious Snake number 2 was his demise. He survived at the vets, but escaped before he was recuperated enough, went hunting, inflamed all the injuries again, and that was it for him. But he would've probably chosen the same path even if he could. I swear to Jesus, the Prophet Whose Name it is not Safe to Mention, and Buddha and Vishnu that this is true. But you're probably going to see right through me again. Perspicacious. I wish I could see the con men coming like that. I'm always getting had.)

Man... just the triplet C sharps were enough... didn't even get to the minor 3rd E.

Dude yes! My dog also does this but I'm on a piano though. My dog somehow loves scales, arpeggios and fast pieces. She kept singing over and over too following the melody, gosh dogs are the best. So cool!

They might prefer Mahler 10, the A-flat minor section at the 1st movement climax, with the chord from hell.

Trumpets are loud and dogs have stronger hearing than us. Maybe practice in another room than the dogs. That's what I've learned to do as a guitarist/pianist.
