What a truly amazing trumpet section the LSO had with Mairice,Rod and Nigel in it. Mahler,Bruckner etc, must have soundrd sensational, they brought these symphonies alive for so many.

That's true. The LSO Co-Principal position has been held by some fine players from Willie Lang onwards. Lang's tenure at the LSO saw him share the principal's job with both Howard Snell and Maurice Murphy ( WL actually preceded MM as principal solo cornet of the Black Dyke Band) - you an see and hear booth him and HS on the LSO's very fine performance of Rite of Spring under Bernstein from 1966 on youtube. When Lang retired he was replaced by Malcolm Smith who stepping across from the BBC Concert orchestra after 13 years found himself suddenly having to play louder ("I couldn't believe the sound coming from the trombones"). MM's reputation as one of the finest British orchestral trumpeters ever is legendary but I think my favourite section was the short time when the section included HS and John Wallace (on 2nd trumpet if you please!). By the way did you know that at one point in the 1970s Rod was also in the solo cornet ranks of Black Dyke? He may have been "bumper" to Philip McCann but I can't be certain.

So sad to hear of his passing. Much respect to those who've loved him. And many thanks for such tremendous skill.

As a conductor and man of music, I can only congratulate for this wonderful demonstration of teaching art. The Brits still remain the best in didactical matters. I learnt more in this 8 minutes about music and style in performing music than in all my life putt together. some ot Mr Franks' remarks are just amazing: they really explain what performing music means. Great. Post more.

Hi foodmore, in the LSO we have two Principals for each instrument, and they job-share. Rod and Maurice were Principal Trumpet together for 20 years; Maurice for 10 years before Rod joined. Rod was once a pupil of Maurice's!

Fantastic! I would love to see a master class on the opening solo to Pictures at an Exhibition - Promenade. The LSO does this particularly well, I find.

@moorebaroque they split roughly 50:50 - so if Rod is playing First, Phil is off, and vice versa. Although at the moment, because very sadly another of our trumpeters passed away in November, you might see them both in the section at once, the one not on First covering whichever part is necessary.

so how does it work with both Rod and Phil being principal? Who plays what part? Do they both play 1st trumpet or does Phil and Rod switch between 1st and 2nd trumpet? How does the whole thing work?

Rod explains why in the video, it's to help the tuning of the trumpet with the other sections: woodwind, strings etc.
