In this video, we tackle a major crisis on our farm: our water mainline in the field that runs our pivots has exploded! Join us as we dig in and replace 400 feet of damaged pipe. We'll walk you through the entire process, from assessing the damage and sourcing the new pipe to the gritty work of excavation and installation.
First, you'll see the extent of the explosion and the immediate impact it has on our irrigation system. We'll explain the crucial role this mainline plays in keeping our crops hydrated and the urgency of getting it repaired. Then, follow along as we navigate the challenges of finding the right replacement materials and mobilizing our team for the task.
Next, we'll dive into the hands-on work of excavation, showcasing the heavy machinery and manual labor required to uncover and remove the broken pipe. You'll get an inside look at the step-by-step installation of the new pipe, including tips and techniques for ensuring a secure and leak-proof connection.
Finally, we'll test the repaired system to make sure everything is running smoothly. It's a tough job, but it's crucial to keep our irrigation system running smoothly. Watch to see how we overcome this challenge and ensure our crops continue to get the water they need. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more updates from the farm!

What a job! One I'm sure you don't want to repeat any time soon. Not only is it backbreaking work, but I'm sure they don't give away that blue pipe. Several years ago, I had to replace 75 feet of sewer pipe from the house to the septic tank. Fortunately, I have a brother in law who is a plumber. My dad, myself, and my brother in law spent an afternoon replacing that line. I'm in Arkansas, so a big problem is large sharp flint rock and limestone. The old pipe was "Orangeburg" pipe, a very cheap material used a lot in the 1970's. I got off pretty easy, aside from renting a backhoe, a load of round river gravel to go beneath the new pipe, the cost of pipe, and a few other materials. All I had in it was sweat equity, running a shovel, ensuring the new pipe was properly cushioned, and keeping proper grade downhill to the septic tank. That's a job I hope never to repeat. Still, I'm very thankful for my family and their help.

It was a pretty big job but we usually end up doing it once or twice a year somewhere on the farm. Your sewer pipe seems like a big job as well.

Am I the only one seeing a tiny bit of irony in the timing of this with the water rights video.

This same thing happened to us 3 or 4 years ago but it happened at night so we didnt find out til morning and the pond out in the field was at least 2 tractors deep and around the pivot there was a 20 foot deep hole.

We install these style irrigation lines for a 5 to 20 times a year and while pip is super amazing it can be super iffy when shallow it doesn't have a very high load rating. We tend to stick to 5ft on every pivot line we do mostly due to farmers ripping or running a disc 2-3ft deep here. Blow outs are fun though done our fair share of patches usually rock issues but if there is air relief blow outs farmers here just try to replace them instead of patch them since it usually ends up splitting 1/4 of the line entire. OH almost forgot just stab it by hand single gasket pipe is easy lol
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 месяца назад
Sounds like you’ve had a lot of experience doing this. We try not to replace the whole line because it’s a lot of pipe.
@dg6241
@dg6241 2 месяца назад
Yea it kinda depends on pump position for our customers. Keeping a well in service is usually the no.1 reason CO seems to be pretty ruthless about wells these days. Lines here seem to range from under a 1/4 mile all the way to a mile and with recent events in the pipe industry it understandable too just do sections and patches. Also a 20ft wide scar the length of a circle is a huge loss to any farmer especially before harvest. Pip is also getting harder and harder to even get due to manufacturing so its unnecessarily pricey as of late more money in SDR35 and C900 than pip for companies like JM Eagle.

I would have thought it would be deeper so it wouldn’t freeze during the winter

We only bury them 3 feet deep in the frost never goes that deep it did not break because of frost

You guys need to think about your trenches and how they are dug. They could be wider especially in the wetter spots. I lost a friend years ago from a trench caving in. Osha has guidelines that would give you some idea. If you followed them exactly you'd dig up your whole field.
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 месяца назад
With a trench only being about 3 feet deep, we don’t need to make it any wider

Yeah, this has a wind muff over it but it didn’t work very well. Since I filmed this video I now have better mics that have noise cancellation so I shouldn’t have this problem in the future.

Why don’t you put a solar powered system on it so use don’t have to worry about a wire in the field 34:56
@RockyMountainFarmer
@RockyMountainFarmer 2 месяца назад
Because you would need about 1000 panels per pivot and a massive battery bank to run them at night.
