Mainline Jubilee Class "Orion" and "Leander" are the last of the box of six locos I was sent to work on. "Orion" was a non runner but "Leander" had life. I thought as they are both the same loco I'd do them together in one video. I nicknamed them "The Twins of Evil"!
Nice engines but being Mainline they have the usual issues with the axles and excessive gear noise.

Great job! The cover photo brought back a memory from the early 60s. I was at grammar school in Coventry when we heard that 2 Jubilees were bringing in specials to see the new cathedral, so we missed school dinner and bunked off to Coventry station to see Leander and Orion, side by side in platforms 1 and 2 at the head of their specials. We were delighted! Just wish we had mobile phones with cameras back then. Happy days!

Excellent again. PO Box for service centre, hope it doesn’t take over. Fantastic for you, you show so much enjoyment in what you do, find and bring back to life; in some occasions. Real joy to watch as each challenge it met and over come. 👍

Another Great Repair. These old Mainline Jubilees may have ropy motors but the detail for their time in ready to run was outstanding and still hold up well today.

Until your J72 video I’d never seen anyone take one of these split chassis apart . Good stuff . I’ve got a Leander , never a great runner but looks good , I’ll give her a wee service .

Great job you did there :) Fully understandable about the address. Sadly we live in scary times about information on the internet. Well said.

Well done bill, I've never worked on a split chassis engine looks a bit scary, looking at the way you tackle these problems you have obviously a very curious mind and just have to find out how things work. Your doing a fantastic job with these locomotives the owner must delighted. Fully agree with you about setting up a drop box to post these items you must be really careful while the fast majority of people are fine and honest you will get the scammer or just nasty person and will cause real upsets. One person said about a local model shop, one shop near us is a small post office/store, and he's used by Hermes the courier as a drop off and pickup, food for thought. Take care enjoying following. Interesting video again, thanks. The host on another channel I follow uses his local model shop as a post box for him. You get a reliable post box, they get a bit of advertising so It might work for you both.

That's not a bad idea. I have a pretty well known model shop not far away. Until lockdown is over though that's not an option but something to look into for sure thanks.

Great job Bill....two great looking locos..nicely detailed for that era..the noise would not bother me at all as I grew up with the locos of the 60s and 70s on my Dads layout!....interesting to hear you mention superglue and baking soda....I use it to fix guitar nut slots for people....works a treat!
@oobill

Yup that's where I learned the super glue and baking soda trick a while ago as I too repair guitars. It's a brilliant micro filler solution.

Great video. I love resurrecting Mainline locos. As for the noise, I'm sure those two sounded like they had the steam sound fitted. It might just be my ears playing tricks on me but I'm sure there was a 'chuff-chuff' noise when you ran them!

Excellent work - you caught me in the middle of watching your triang class 37 video, as mine has completely failed on me - ive tried cleaning the wheels and pickups but in all honesty little gunk came off them. I digress - loving all these videos
@oobill

The Class 37 armature was prone to failure it seems. I had to replace mine and it's the only time I've had to do that. So check that out if it's completely dead.

Some of the noise is the tender locating pin rattling in the locator slot under the cab. Some black heat shrink, 3mm or so placed over the peg will reduce the chattering noise.

What amazes me is how you remember where all the screws and bits and bobs go,i think i would have to take pics! Well done though i am impressed.
@oobill
@oobill 3 года назад
I edit out the "where does that go again?" bits. :) Actually no you kind of learn to memorise where things go but I do sometimes take pictures and there is a "geography of parts" process you can follow by arranging the parts in the order you remove them.

Hi Bill. Well done! What a collection of abused locomotives! I don’t know why, but none of the locos crawl slowly, maybe it is something to do with the controller. They seem to jump into a sprint. I have all sorts of models and most of them will accelerate smoothly from a crawl to running speed.
@oobill
@oobill 3 года назад
Nah that's just my controlling. Actually these two pull away very nicely and will crawl.

Just a suggestion but would your local hobby shop allow you to use them as a postal drop? Especially if you give them a plug on your channel? I believe a couple of other RU-vidrs have done something along these lines such as Chadwick.

I was wondering how people knew how & where to contact you. Hope you are able to set up a PO Box system, as it would be really useful to have access to a repair service from someone like yourself who clearly derives a lot of pleasure from resurrecting these old locos, not to mention earning you a few pounds to reinvest in your railway, have to watch out mind as it may start taking over your life. As you say you can't be too careful these days in divulging your address & contact details to all & sundry
@oobill
@oobill 3 года назад
I almost certainly will. It's expensive to do and may mean I have to charge a little to cover it over and above what I earn from YT monetisation. As soon as I have one set up I will let everyone know. ;)
@paulnewnes1921
@paulnewnes1921 3 года назад
@@oobill you should charge for the repairs anyway people shouldn’t expect to get things done for nothing it’s not fair even though you clearly enjoy doing it. I have to admit I know nothing about YT’s payments and how they are calculated etc it’s a mystery to me

It's a shame Mainline went down that split chassis route as their models where really nicely detailed and looked great. Is it possible those screws that met in the middle were the wrong ones so too long.
@oobill
@oobill 3 года назад
The split chassis is a brilliant idea actually. Just very poorly engineered by Mainline. Hornby went down the more pickups route which resulted in more points of failure and super fiddly repairs and servicing. A split chassis with good bushed axles would work very well and be very easy to maintain.
