The flagstones from around the property would look great in the cottage. But it might be a good idea to plot the size and shape of each one, like puzzle pieces, and play with the arrangement of smaller paper versions of the stones until you get a look you like. Once you've decided, then place the real, large stones. It doesn't sound like a good idea visually to put all the big ones in the middle. If either of you has the computer skills, there must be a program that would give you the same view you'd have standing in the room. Good luck!
Truly respect the thought and tremendous effort you put into renovating with integrity and reverance for the materials, the Earth, and the natural aesthetics of the place. Good on ya both ~ ♥
My husband, Dave and I watch your weekly program on the TV together each time we see a new episode is posted. We love your sense of humor. You two remind me of when we ran a resort in a remote wilderness area in eastern Oregon. One of the things we were thinking about is if you can use a block and tackle or rotating Jib frame to move the flagstone into the door of the cabin. Katie, we love the cooking sessions and how it was done in the past and you are preserving the process for the future. What a treasure to have the old cookbook and the knowledge to understand and go with it. We love the history you share as well. Scott, You are a hoot. Anyone with half a brain would see you do your fair share of work there. You two are an inspiration to so many. You two seem to have a rich past separately and together. Katie, I have heard you mention being on a farm, spending time in the United States (?), and so on. Scott, were you a city boy before meeting with Katie? How long have you two been together? Your avid fans from Idaho, USA. Dave & Mary
Hi Dave and Mary! Thank you for these kind words, it means a lot. If you're curious about our back-stories, have a wee listen to the four podcasts we put on the channel. They give our history. Good for a listen while cooking, or knitting! I can almost hear little Shona saying "Play with me! Play with me!" Brie and Crowdie! So cute! A very peaceful little flock! I hope you both find some time to rest and relax! Thank you for sharing, as always!
Lie down and a gin and tonic! 👏 Yes, bring some strong friends over to help. If Scott injures his back again, you’ve got a whole new class of problems. Best of luck from Minnesota.
I love that y’all are working so had to bring back the cottage to its original state. It is and will be so worth it. The serenity of the outside with birds and the wind are so relaxing to listen to.
What a gorgeous place to live. It is a lot of work, but the outcome will be spendid! Don't hurt your backs, be very careful and don't pickup heavy slates; use a wheel barrel! You both are amazing!! Blessings
I’m with the lady on this. As well as the hard work the flags will be very cold especially in winter as I have found out. But good luck with the project.
I laughed and laughed when the first "meanwhile" came on! Scott and Katie were working so hard and then.....the life of a Scottish Isle sheep was the contrast 😂 I wish you the best on figuring out the floor. All of the choices seem like a great deal of work! Take time to relax and rejuvenate...and pet your cats and sheep.
Hi to you , so lovely to see you again , but fully understand how you needed some time out . Such a tremendous task you have ahead of you , and just amazed that you are going to make the cottage look like it used too . Can’t wait to see it take shape . That little lamb was hilarious 😂. 😘
Wow what a lot of hard work but it will be absolutely fabulous when completed. I am full of admiration for what you are doing to achieve authenticity. Thank you. 🐏🐑🐑🐈⬛🐈⬛
Used to have a 200/250 year old cottage. Floor wood in one room was rotten in one area. Lifted it to find it was laid on soil. Excavated two feet down to put in pillars and joists supports for the new floor. At that depth found a pair of boots and cleaning brushes buried in the corner of the room. It had obviously been filled in at some point for some unknown reason.
shona is growing lovely and naughty but playful 😂 thank you for another great viewing, it will get there slowly. have a lovely week all of you on the scottish isle 😊
Missed your videos.love what your doing.hard job getting those flagstones into cottage.i agree would look fantastic .well done on what you both do .love your videos and your lifestyle keep them coming.👍👍👍
Oh my you have snakes in Scotland he was big and I do not like snakes. Shona is so precious dancing and playing with the bigger sheep 😊. I can only imagine the amount of work being done in the cottage however the finish will be beautiful 🤗❤️🙏
The previous comment re arrangement of stones is right on. I have one small suggestion to go along with that. Stones floors can be quite cold, depending on your environment. I would suggest placing a good layer of gravel down, then high density foam , thinset or concrete then your flagstones , just to break the earth connection that conducts cold. You could on top off the foam place pex piping cover it with concrete to have hydronic heat. Once heated your floor would act as a heater for your home and always be warm. Just a thought. Love your island, reminds me quite a bit of Northern Ontario where a lot of Scottish immigrants made their home, I can see why almost identical country in scenery
@@TheScottishIsle There are stoves on the market, wood, gas ,coal and even oil that do exactly that. Where I live in Northwestern Ontario, Canada (Kenora Region) Outside wood boilers and inside wood stoves (with attached tanks to heat water-for home use /and or hydronic heat are common .If you are stand-alone or off grid like a lot of homesteaders these stoves are amazing . I believe a lot of European countries especially, Norway, Denmark , Sweden and Finland sell many types of these stoves. England also has stoves available but I do not know the brand. Again Good work on your reno's ,it can be a lot of work but fun at the same time and you can appreciate the results!
A lot of hard work ahead of you. Shona living a happy life. She is looking so cute on the chair. Like Jim's plaque with the vikingship. I live in Roskilde in Denmark. The town is known for its vikingship museum.😊❤
How lovely to see Shona running around like a mad thing. Plus getting butted for her trouble. ❤️ You will have to dig that floor out anyway, or the top of the flags will be too high.
Shona is so funny. Loved watching her zoomies. Have missed watching you both. The flooring is a big job. You guys are doing great. I can just imagine how beautiful and cosy it will look when the room is done. ❤
I only wish you could see how beautiful everything looks from my end thanks to your work .. 😂 OMG that little Shorna .. hopefully soon you can also relax ❤❤ thank you whenever you can post appreciated.👍
This episode had it all. Katie’s initial underwhelming response to the big flagstones, crowdie head butting a very spirited Shona, beautiful landscapes, so much green and different greens, birdsong, wildlife. Beautiful. So so enjoyable. Is Martin the marten still about🥰
Yes, the floor will be a lot of work...but it will be so worth it when you get it done. If only, we could bottle the energy from young lambs and take a leaf out of their books on how to, 'not - have - a - care - in - the - world!' looking forward to seeing how the work goes.
I’m rooting for you on your floor project! Take heart, give yourself small achievable goals with each stage and I know you will succeed. Regards from Ontario, Canada.
Whoever had that place before you obviously didn’t have a clue about what they were doing. They have ruined it. It will be hard work but amazing when you have finished with it. Well done for everything you are doing
Aww, them couple of minutes of the sheep just being sheep and wee baby lamby were just adorable 🥰 …loved the Viking slate carving too, it’s not easy carving in slate and they’ve done a beautiful job.
Scott could build a wooden sled to move the rocks. They also have these little square wood, things with wheels and the d. I y stores that you could use to help pull. And push the rack slabs into the house. I've seen them used on RU-vid channels to pull big heavy beams through old houses that they're renovating. You could also use a wheeled dolly cart while they slabs are tilted on their sides to move the slabs inside the house. They have dollys with bottom extentions so you could put the slabs at a good angle or lay flat for better moving.
Love watching your chosen lifestyle and when I was 30 years younger it would have been a path I wished I had followed, but today I find your "meanwhile" lifestyle suits me fine.
You could always leave the grass to grow and just mow a path through it so you can walk through it. Or cut it in stages not do all of it in one go (should you not do that already). The wild flowers and wildlife would thank you for it (not forgetting Scott!!) it would also save you lots of time and energy!
I think the flagstones would look amazing but will be a hell of a job to move them. Would be great if you could get a working bee together, am sure closer subscribers would pitch in but know it's probably not possible for many reasons. Shona's hilarious, could watch her all day, the other's seem to think their playing days are over 😂 And do love that plaque, would love to see how he goes about even doing that, looks pretty painstaking!
Because every time you choose to click on one of our thumbnails to watch a new episode, RU-vid automatically unsubscribes you. This has been happening to a large percentage of our subscribers since March this year. On average, RU-vid are unsubscribing people from 'The Scottish Isle' to the tune of 80-100 subs per day. If it wasn't for them doing this - and we have no idea why they are (they're not interested in acknowledging it, let alone stopping it) - we'd already be at 100k subs. We've given up worrying about it. There is nothing we can do but watch people being unsubbed from the channel in real time.
Haha…Shona has the zoomies. So cute. You both are awsome. Staying historically correct with your renovations. Impressive. Flagstones will look amazing but the work ahead is not going to be easy. But knowing you two it will get done and it will be done right. Kudos to both you.
Hello Katie and MP Scott 😂. Nice to see you back. Can I suggest you make a wooden frame with a backing to place the viking ship slate inside of. This should protect the edges etc from damage. It's gorgeous and needs protecting. See you next time .. P.S. I'm exhausted just thinking about moving those flag stones. ❤ from New Zealand
Random thought. Not related to this video, but just a general thought. Why don’t you rig up feathered lines and set them out in the sea. Weighted down with a float and catch fish bet you would get Mackerel. Nothing better than fresh Mackerel.
