"HOW MUCH We Paid For Our Derelict Farmhouse in Ireland" finally discloses exactly how much we paid for our Irish four bedroom farmhouse, two ancient stone outbuildings and just under an acre of farmland which will become our Homestead in Ireland. We also answer a lot more questions in our not so normal take on questions and answers session such as "Why Ireland", this is easy, the rural countryside is AMAZING.
With the first stage of restoring the 200 year old stone built outbuilding with lime complete, we thought it time to answer some questions you have asked.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

Thank you so much John. Your comments are always so nice and also encouraging, we do like to read them. If only one person see's what we have done and decides they can do it too, then our videos have been worth it. Fingers crossed our channel grows enough so we can have enough to manage. We don't need riches, just enough and we are happy. How is Canada at the moment? We have had a mix of sun and rain but it is still chilly at night. Have a good week John and thank you again :-)

Hi, guys, June 23rd is St John's night, just after Solstice. On John's night it is traditional to light a bonfire. Part of the Fire Spirit for the turn of the year. Bless you both, you are an In spiration to many. I wish you luck and joy and God health!

Hi Artistik World, how are you? Well it just so happens that we have been collecting bonfire material for St John's night in readiness, hopefully the rain won't dampen it down to much. I think having a pile collected and learning about St John's night about two months ago was a happy accident, don't you think ;-) Thank you very much indeed, that is a really nice thing for you to say and a very nice thing to read. Thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)

Hi, I'm well. Start a good fire with dry kindling,then add all the rest. Some of the dryworm timber will be fine for starting it. When I was a kid in the west of Ireland, Bonfire night was a big event. Thanks for all your vids I enjoy them..

To me, this was the best! Thank you both for sharing your story, I was glued from the word Hello. Thanks to everyone for asking questions, as now I can understand the why's, wherefores, and way you do things. My grandmother used to tell me a lot; there is no right or wrong way to do things, just different! And you both embody that, I love it. Cheers to you both, and keep having fun.

What a wonderful Q & A, loved hearing your story, you were so fortunate to find such a great property, at exactly the right time for an amazing price. You really do know when something feels right and you've certainly moved to the right place. I'm so fond of you both, you are doing everything right and also I'm thrilled that you're keeping the brown!❤

Good evening Pat, how are you today and how has your week been? Thank you for your nice comments. We were fortunate. Everything just seemed to fall into place at the right time. The cottage we had our hearts set on soon fell by the wayside when we saw it in person. Believe it or not, it would have been too much for us to take on with no experience in building works or a trade. But The Corner House was the second place we looked at and we were so sure after an hour of being here, we even removed some of the ivy which had started to grow up the wall of the house, somehow knowing we would be back. Not sure we are doing everything right.... we are doing everything slowly hahahaha. We want to restore as much as we can, or recreate what we can, so keeping the brown, especially knowing how much you like it, is important haha. Thank you so much Pat for always watching and commenting :-)

For the next Q&A then, have you considered bees and bee-keeping, for pollination and honey? Clever setup, with the camera outside, and the screen, and sound equipment. Nicely done.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 11 дней назад
Hahaha, the next one? We were shocked at how hard it was and we know the answers already. I think making it like we did made it harder though, but hopefully more interesting. Bees..... I did say to Dawn long ago about keeping bees but I am not a fan of them really so decided it probably wouldn't be a good move lol. Thanks Andrew for watching and commenting :-)

Determination is our middle name and we will have a go at pretty much anything. I will sort the last bits of Dawn finishing the first part of the wall so you can get to see it and not just a glimpse of it through a photo on the wall haha. I felt like we needed something a little different for our Q&A :-) Thank you as always, for always being here, even though you are all the way over there. Watching the Q&A today I was struck by a similarity! I also bought a fixer-upper on 1 acre of land in the Mississippi countryside for the same amount as you did! Lol. What a coincidence! I gutted (literally me) the entire house down to the studs and started over. Only the ceilings were spared 😬 Thankfully I didn’t have stone walls to repair. I can’t wait to see it all done but you are right to pace yourselves.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 12 дней назад
Wow that is a coincidence isn't it, sounds like you had it all under control. You and Dawn sound alike, don't really need men lol. How long ago did you buy that? And depending on that answer, have you got it all finished and how you wanted it to be? 6 months every day was hard work but had to be done. This year, apart from soooo much digging, has been more relaxed, certainly now. Would you believe, apart from recording the video stuff yesterday, we are actually having the weekend off. Thank you so much for watching and commenting sharing your experience :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject As long as I can remember, I’ve taken on projects myself. I watched my mother wait for 20 years for my father to put up a metal backsplash behind the cook stove and I declared right then as a teenager that I would never ask a man to do something that I could do myself. Lived that truth since then. I’ve tackled things no other female friends of mine would ever attempt. Once I moved several railroad ties that were used to border flower beds to the curb for pickup. I’ve written down the “how I did it” and sealed it in an envelope to be opened after my death lol. Like Dawn, I also have an issue with my right shoulder not being 100% and that slows me down. I will tackle most anything but plumbing. Very interested in watching your workarounds.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 11 дней назад
Sounds like you and Dawn are the very same person lol. Dawn has always been of the mindset of if she can do it, why shouldn't she.... so she does, so good for you too :-) With the new push fit fittings and plastic pipe, plumbing in general is quite easy. Plumbing in our range in the kitchen will be done by a professional due to the pressure of building water. Copper fixings and pipe needs to be used I believe, and it is the "I believe" which is why we will get a pro in. Other than that, I can make a workaround for most things haha. Thank you so much for your reply :-)

It’s amazing how much we are alike. My husband and I also have always been home bodies, we have never really been the type that loves going out, we don’t drink or smoke. I am exactly like Dawn, I have to be busy, I absolutely hate being bored and am always ‘pottering about’. We in many ways regret not doing something similar when we were younger. Loving watching your channel, and seeing the changes. xx

Hi Andrea.. thank you so much for watching and commenting. I think there are more of us home bodies than we think and certainly a lot of people maybe regretting not going with a gut feeling and just going for something. We knew that if we didn't grab the bull by the horns when the time seemed right, we may not be here or ever done it. We are so pleased we did. We used to smoke but gave up and just vape now, been vaping far too long but a lot cheaper than smoking. Don't know about healthier yet, we will let you know lol. I like to potter and Dawn likes the big things when available to do, but this weekend, for the first time is a weekend off. Thanks for sharing our adventure, it is nice to know we are enjoyed :-)

Hi Dawn & Ben! What a fun video! I actually clocked on a few minutes after you posted and was so excited. And then the internet went down, and I had to wander off and do animal chores. You two are such really nice, fun people. I think I personally kept the video an extra 1/2 hour longer (oops🤭) with my many questions, but I am so thankful you answered them. I'm thrilled your stove fund is getting up there! Last winter looked so damp and cold. Ben, the indoor/outdoor video chat from the living room was really cool! Not sure how you did it, but very impressed! You two are amazing for following your bliss and living your dreams. ❤ P.S. Sometimes, fruit trees need another of the same species, blooming at the same time, to cross-pollinate in order to bear fruit.😉

Pleased you enjoyed the video, we had plenty of questions hahahaha. It doesn't matter how long it was, as long as we answered most. I realised once it was edited we had missed some of your questions so we are sorry about that. Yes, the stove fun is building, thank you for asking that question, which is lovely and will help immensely and nice that we will always think about the people who supported us. The video was fun to make but did add a lot of hours to the editing time and the arm wrestle took ages as we kept laughing. Hopefully we will see some plums in the future but it isn't looking like we will get any this year. No rush, we can wait :-) Thank you as always for being so invested with us. Have a nice week :-)

Hi Wendy, thank you for a great comment and of course for watching. We think it is like going back 40 years or so. Petrol pumps are still a single pump where the man MUST put the fuel in the car, you can buy coal and logs from everywhere and so many other things. Public transport for us is non existent where we are unless we go into a town or know the bus route. We need to find a good Chinese takeaway but we really don't miss anything except family. We love the way of life this area gives us. Thank you again for watching and commenting :-)

Well we don't know why Clare but your comment was put in the naughty box for some reason, so sorry for the late reply. They were both great questions and both deserved thoughtful answers, I am not sure who had the most air time in the end though between you, call it a draw :-) It is the dream that keeps you going isn't it. To look around and know that one day it will all be amazing and worth every cut, bump, bruise, ache, oooh, ahh and grunt! (We seem to be having more ooohs, ahh and grunts lately). The cats on the table were a happy accident. Peaches is just nosey and Alan was busy sleeping to care. Oh yes, it had to be Steve and then Alan for exactly that reason. We have never had human names for any of our cats but always liked them, so these gingers were the first. In that case keep it w 5:56 6:03 here you can. It was used only in the best houses. Needed skilled tradespeople to do it as it went hard very fast. Lot of things about your farmhouse point to a wealthy owner. The design of the culvert, the quality of stone work particularly at the corners and door openings in the out buildings, the door and window detail. Certainly not a average farmhouse of its time. Enjoy..

Hi, Dawn and Ben! I think you you two mesh really well with the things that you're doing and have to do. You just seem to gravitate to your jobs naturally and that's nice. I can't imagine how you're going to put that long piece at the top to create the roof in the outbuilding! :) Makes me dizzy just to think about it. Your answer to "why Ireland" makes complete sense! It's so beautiful and the countryside seems so restful. Cities are tough everywhere, but not every country has that lushness. I'm sure I'm not the only one to say that we're glad you found the Corner House and decided to do youtube!! What would we do without you? Thanks for the chat. I've got to go now, but I'll be back to finish later! XO
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 12 дней назад
Well the door is open when you return and you know where the kettle is by now hahaha. Seriously though, we do gravitate to our most suited jobs even if the rolls are reversed sometimes. The roof beam will go up using the scaffold, we should have plenty to have two towers one at each end. I won't say it will be easy but hopefully we will manage it OK between us. It is easy to see "Why Ireland" isn't it, really easy. We used to get quite excited when we saw the tractor in the field which used to be behind our house at harvest time, now we have tractors passing the front door, being on cow directing duty and having to walk down the country lane with our rubbish bins every other Sunday. It really is a beautiful place. As I said in the video, we think The Corner House found us and we feel very fortunate it did. We are always here for a chat, normally on a Saturday hahahaha. Well I think Dawn is going to throw both of your questions right back at you for your journey in the car tomorrow, but for the first time in 12 months, she is actually sat watching something on the TV in the living room so don't think she has got round to it yet. You two sat at the kitchen table in your first video made us realise we would not be alone in our journey we were just starting. Hi Dawn and Ben, Thank you so much for all the information you gave on this brilliant Q&A episode. I have followed your journey from the start and enjoy the episode each week. I remember back to spring when you did daily updates on your garden, phew. The stone wall rebuild looks great as do the new doors. I have a question, have you ever met up with Rob & Clare or other homesteader to have a catch up or to share the journeys? All the best to you both 💛
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 12 дней назад
Hi Helen, you are most welcome but thank you for always watching and commenting on our videos. 32 days of daily videos, seven days a week were hard work but if nothing else it showed us that I can make videos every day in a few hours and Dawn can reply to no end of comments. It did take pretty much every waking hour to do, but we did it. As a result, everyone got to see what we were up against with the land and share our pleasure when it was finally "finished" so it was worth it. We have met Becky from Irish Homestead and hope one day we will get to meet Rob and Clare as they are our hero's really. Those two can really work and that was with full time jobs! We are not a patch on them. We will show the first fixed part of the wall Dawn has been working on properly as it would be a shame no to share the last few bits being done. It was going to be the intro for this video but I felt it deserved more than to be just a few minutes before Q&As. Thanks so much for being with us all of this time. Still so much to do, but you know us, slowly but surely we will get there. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

On your water situation why not ask the farmer next door to supply your water , the shed next door has a water supply, it would be easy to run a pipe to your house , pretty sure he would do so for a couple of hundred a year if anything, until ye get your own well, just a suggestion. Ask around for a local water deviner, he will tell if you have a water supply on your land .better to know for peace of mind, if there is none, then farmers water is your best option anyway. I built on a 10 acre field, found water beside the house, but he said that was the only place showing in the field.

@thecornerhouseproject 12 дней назад
Hi Tango It is a thought but we wouldn't want to put him in a position where he felt obliged to say yes if there is a reason he shouldn't do it. We are doing well on the rain water harvesting at the moment and have all the filters and UV light in place making sure the water is clean, germ and bacteria free. We can always add chlorine to the tanks if we wanted to go down that route. Dawn is pleased with the fact that in 12 months, she hasn't had to use hair conditioner as there is no additives in the water. Thanks for your input and thoughts. Something we will keep in mind.

Fingers crossed, as time goes on, we will have more done and we will be able to spend more time relaxing. Once Dawn has of course done her research lol, Goats will happen, I think even if we have to change the entire place to allow for them, goats will happen. A sheep is just something I think would be fun. Like the cats come for a walk with us, the sheep would too. (In my minds eye anyway) Thank you so much for always watching and commenting Ellen.

@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 11 дней назад
Oooooh no, we could never butcher them, they would instantly be pets. I like pigs but never read into them. What happens when they have destroyed the current plot they were on? Do you just keep moving them or can they stay in the one area? We know as soon as we get animals the nice green patch won't be green anymore, but wonder if pigs would make it a huge mud area. Off Grid Bruce has 8 acres I think and moves his pigs around to clear the land they are on. That is what makes me wonder what we would do with them. Thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject I don't know about pigs at all. But didn't Mossey Bottom have at least one Kune Kune pig? He only had an acre. People seem to do better with pigs rather than goats. But then it might be a matter of the type of goat and what you are willing to put into them?

Regarding sheep or goats, be careful and research carefully first. Because I know that sheep can easily get problems with their feet if the ground is too wet, and I'm thinking that maybe goats could be the same. As your land seems to be a bit challenged drainage wise, that might not be the best choice. Maybe ducks would be better (bigger eggs and not so sensitive to the boggy ground ?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 12 дней назад
Hi Catherine. Oooh we won't be jumping in feet first, have you met Dawn, Research is her second, third and fourth name haha. We would also ask the advice and input from farmers who have sheep / goats too. The land is in need of drainage channels in several places and we wouldn't get animals until we were ready for them. We would have loved to have had animals this year but the time isn't right and the place isn't ready. Chickens we could do, but larger livestock will have to wait for now. Thank you so much for your input and thank you for watching :-)

I watch a lot of vlogs with people like your selves. (Particularly in Portugal). Anyone that has had goats has had to sell them. (Except for Tiny Shiny home) who have just built a goat barn. The goats have eaten the bark off the fruit tress and ignored the brambles in Nick and Andreas farm from Project Portugal. Luke and Sarah (Luke and Sarah’s off grid life) had to sell their goats because they needed, but couldn’t afford the infrastructure for all the milk the goats produced. They had too much cheese and yoghurt.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 11 дней назад
Oooh we would only have a couple / few pigmy goats and not for food or milk. The plan is to have electric fences around the entire plot to keep all animals in and others out, and then once they have learned what the nice white ribbon does we will then put it around the areas we want protected such as around the trees. We will keep the entrance where the badgers come in free from the fence though as it is there home too :-) Did you see Clarkson's Farm when they trained those new goats what the electric fence did? There were so many OW noises before they all gathered in the middle of the plot out the way of the fence lol. Poor little buggers. Thanks so much for sharing what you have watched :-)

It was a channel just dedicated to chatting with others, I don’t know if back when you were younger there used to be like a information service on the tv that told you things like the weather or the news via just text on the screen? We used to have something called ceefax in England and that’s what the channel sort of looked like that me and Ben met via. It was just called Txtme I think. Oh yes I do love a puzzle, not particularly jigsaw puzzles but definitely mind puzzles! I used to play a lot of PlayStation and n64 games and I prefer the platform games where you have to figure out a puzzle to unlock something else. He did a great job with that extra screen didn’t he? He is a computer geek through and through and loves learning new things to do. Editing is pretty new to him but because of how his brain works he picks it up pretty well, I’m not sure I could do what he does. That would be amazing if RU-vid gave us that little boost! But I do wonder if we need to go back to doing more than one video a week, we will see what happens but until then we shall see you soonish 😊 Thanks again for your question and lovely to be in the gang of “odd relationship meetings!”

interesting micro goats sheep and chickens. Goats will love to eat your already past their prime fruit trees bc they'll ringbark the trees and clear away your fruit canes, unless there's guards around the trees. I noticed in one vid you took cuttings, and I'm assuming you put rooting powder or honey and planted, and there was a a hint about . The'll take 10 years to fruit. Whereas if you'd bought rooting stock and grafted your cutting on the stock it would be 2 years before it fruited. Goats are we milking or for meat, or breeding? For the normal size its 5 head per half an acre, Not really sure with the micro goats but normal urinate all over themselves and their females, you need to wear a a hazmat suit and taints the milk. Now sheep same 5 head per half an acre great lawn mowers as they only have top teeth. But it also means you gotta learn how to shear their wool off and possibly learn to spin. Or get meat sheep. My fav, chickens Where I am its a square meter per head to live in. I have 3 areas for my hens a coop for just the layers, an emergency room with an incubator cupboard for medication broodying box. for baby to 8 weeks old meat birds call 'fryers'. isolation section for bumble foot pr sourcrop which they get if their crop ain't empty first thing I the morning. The main issue us they should be able to see each other, Even the 3rd section that for fertility. Again we are not allowed to sell fertile eggs in with the just layers , but we can sell them as fertile eggs.

That is quite a bit of knowledge you have there tucked away, thank you. We plan of having the no go areas taped off once they learn what the electric fence does. Like the farmers around here use the white tape over drive ways and things so the cows don't go past it, that is our plan too. We have cuttings of willow and black currents but didn't take any of the apples once we saw they were starting to show signs of life again. Each apple tree has some fruit growing so we are hoping we can grow from seed and now have to use root stock. Although have fruit available is nice, it will be nice to try and grow from apple seeds to reproduce the same tree. Any animals we get will basically become pets, so we would more than likely have a couple of Does to avoid the urine issue with the Billys as eating them won't happen. We may look at milk at a later stage but not initially. Sounds like we have found the right person to ask about chicken and coops. It wouldn't be many to start with as we want to find our feet with them first and learn as we go. Too many might take the fun out of it. Thank you so much for all of your information, it is a brilliant read. Thank you for always watching and commenting, it really is appreciated :-)

NO.

🤣 Gracias de nuevo por el encantador comentario encantador --------------------------------------- Hi Mario 😊 First of all thank you so much for your lovely and well thought out comment ❤️ and also thank you for kind thoughts on my rebuild of that portion of the wall. The book is so very helpful and I think that’s down to the way Pat Mcafee explains the whole process is such a simple but very in depth way. I’d wholeheartedly recommend that to anyone if they are looking at wanting to do any stone work. I think Ben has a talent for carpentry, not that he would agree lol His dad was a carpenter and joiner so he feels like he has big boots to fill. He did a really good job on all of the doors though and they look blooming lovely! 🥰 From Wexford we are about 3 and half hours away. We’re in County Leitrim our nearest, what we would class as our biggest town, is Carrick on Shannon. Oh wow! Yes we had not thought about the clearing of the land! The change in that from when we first moved here really is an achievement and so much work to get it done. Thank you for reminding us and you’re right that really should have been up there with biggest achievement! We wholeheartedly agree with your reasoning behind not waiting to build up some more savings because we most likely would have been out priced to be able to do what we are doing now and where we are doing it. Everything happens for a reason and happens the way it should, I truly believe in fate! Also our age, like you say would have played a big part, the older we get the more we ache and the less stamina there is! 🤣 Thank you again for lovely lovely comment 🥰

enjoying your journey. I have been binge watching to catch up, started at the first episode and i think i got most. I like the land clearing looking for old things, so it wasnt boring for me at all. I am curious how a goat will work out when that time comes. They will keep the vegetation down, but they need a secure fence.
