PLEASE READ!!!
Due to some molding in some users plates omit the alcohol and replace it with glycerin. For Example 3cups water, 3 cups glycerin, 12 Tablespoons gelatin. Adding sugar to the mix will help preserve the plate too so I'm told but I have not tried that yet. I found an alternative recipe with sugar here: calligraphycards-shazinoz.blog... if you want to see hers, it was posted after I made this video otherwise I would have tried her recipe first instead of coming up with my own:) calligraphycards-shazinoz.blog...
Hey friends! I was overwhelmed by the response to yesterday's video that I had to play a bit more and figured out how to make a non-spoiling gel printing plate, AKA gelatin plastic or a Hectograph. I can't say for sure that it is the same as a Gelli Plate but it works as well as a regular gelatin plate and it won't mold or rot. If it gets too beat up, cut or scratched (used & abused) just clean it and melt it for 1 minute in your microwave on high and reset it, easy peasy! Here is the recipe:
6 Tablespoons geletin (7 packets)
1 1/2 Cups water
1 1/2 cup glycerin
I dissolved the geliten in the alcohol/glycern then added the boiling water but you can just mix it all up and microwave it for a minute, don'tcha love something this easy, I do!
Also, here is UK Maryanne's post about making gelli tools with funfoam (she's stinkin' brilliant!) scrappystickyinkymess.wordpres...
And my blog, I hope to have up some finished gelatin print projects this weekend: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/ Music credit (if music is present in video) Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)

I just cut up and re-poured my diy gelli plates (your recipe!) so I can have 3 barely teen girls over for a craft date. I am 63 and loving your tips on frugality so we can all be creative. I want to show these girls that you don't have to spend a lot of money to create. Thank you again for all of your great ideas and tips. Each will go home with a bag (I made from scrap fabric) filled with her own gelli plate, some paint, texture tools, and card blanks so she can maintain the momentum and catch the vision.

It's 2019, & my diy Hectograph is going strong to this day! I used glycerin, water, & gelatin about 4 years ago, & have remade it many times, adding a single recipe when needed. Each time I remake my 9" x 13" plate, I'll strain it through several layers of damp cheesecloth to remove dried paint & fibers, etc, & it then has a perfectly clean working surface again. I've told hundreds of ppl to watch this video over the years, & hope they love it as much as I do! You changed my life for the better with this video & I thank God for you, Lindsay! Thank you for making my life better than it was before, & it was a great life back then before discovering you!!! ❤️

Hi Lindsay - I finally got my stuff together and made a 12" x 12" x almost .75 thick gelatin plate. It came out awesome! I used 16 pkts gelatin, 3.5c water, 3.5c glycerin. It's nice and firm but pliable. Luv it! Thanks for the recipe!

Just wanted to give you an update on the plates that I made. For one plate,I used 7 pkgs plain Knox Gelatin dissolved in 1 ½ cups cold water to bloom. Meanwhile, heat to boiling 1 cup of water and 1 cup of glycerin and 1 tbsp sugar Add to the Knox gelatin and stir until all is dissolved. Pour into mold.(8 x 10 box frame). I kept them in a box on the shelf - no refrigeration needed, and after 5 months, it's still working fine and no molding. I've also made round ones in 8" cake pans and smaller plastic containers so I have a variety of shapes and sizes.

I read somewhere else that someone thought the sugar acted as a preservative or disinfectant but honestly that makes no sense to me at all. Vinegar maybe, but sugar? Anyhoo, I'm sticking with straight gelatin, glycerin and alcohol, and bleaching everything beforehand this time. We'll see how that does. It is a bit weird. For two weeks it sat in my kitchen on the counter, sealed in a cute cupcake holder I had bought at Walmart. It looked fine until a couple days ago, when I noticed the surface appeared a bit weird. I ignored that and put it in my new craft room, closer to a window but still out of direct sunlight and then last night noticed a lot of mold. Oh well. Will eventually get this working! :-)

Now, two years later, could you update on how that plate held up? I'm debating about using the alcohol along with the glycerin.
@akartisan1

I made 9 of these for a class I taught. The main thing was to have your final place LEVEL before you pour it. Luckily, I did this right before it snowed, so I used a shelf unit outside in my driveway that I checked with a level and put shims to make it level first. Then I carried the liquid stuff in an 8 cup measuring cup out to the shelf and poured it into the frames. I used 8 1/2 x 10 1/2' frames and 2 that were 11 x 14. It was cool enough outside that it acted as a refrigerator. After the first 2, I left out the alcohol and just used water and glycerin. I put each one in the frame in a ziploc bag for storage. They worked great

I don't know, if it was just gelatin I'd say melt and mix in the other ingredients but since bleach is involved I'd say don't risk it, use that plate till it spoils or breaks down then chuck it and try this recipe. I'm curious how the bleach worked, let me know how long it lasts if you think of it;) Thanks for watching!

I just remelted mine after almost a year on the shelf. It had not degraded nor molded, but I wanted to make it bigger to accomodate larger sizes of paper. I melted it in the microwave (3 1/2 minutes, probably should have added a spot of water and made it 4 minutes). Then I mixed it with some fresh and poured it out again.

I just finished pouring 2 gelatin plates and here is what I found out for anyone who is interested. I bought a 16 oz bottle of vegetable glycerin online (gives you 2 full cups) and followed your mixing ratios and could fill 2 moulds one was 5" x 7" and the other was 6" x 15 ". I was hoping to get more because I have and 11" x 14" mold but will have to wait for my next order of glycerin. You did mention something about a sugar addition for preservation but if you have ever tasted glycerin you will see it is laden with sugar or something extremely sweet. Thanks for the great recipe. Glad I found it before I made up one of the others without glycerin. Love your videos and your energy and of course your great creativity.

I just finished mixing my first gelli press plate, using your receipt ..now I'm giving it an all night cool down or chill out ..I'm so excited ... I had to compromise the receipt because I could not find gelatin any where with in 15 miles of me ...so I only had 4 packs of gelatin to work with .. but you gave us equivalents and I used them ! so I think it will work..My pan is smaller too . I had to break out my carpenter's level to get the pan level ..Thanks for sharing this DIY project!! ..PS. So glad to read that glycerine alone is a preservative ..I did want to mention as a soap molder I sprayed alcohol on my glycerine soap after pouring the base into the molds to make the surface bubbles go away.

It is a clear acrylic picture frame, I got it for $1 but they are normally $2-$4 I think, they work the best for this and other storage too! I can't get it back in there to store unless I were to trim it, I have just left it out, I might just set a page protector on top to keep the dust off of it and slide it on a shelf;) Or buy one of the bigger frames to set the plate in. Lots of options I quess;)

I know that you created this video a long time ago; however, I just wanted to let you know I have made my own and I followed yours and someone else's video. So instead of adding the alcohol as you suggested, I used just the water and the glycerin. However, I have found that if you soften the gelatin with part of the water and brought the rest of the water and the glycerin to a boil and then added it to the soften gelatin. It was easier to use and set up a lot faster. Of course my was a little thinner than yours, will be making a thicker one some. Thank you for saving me a lot of money.

years I think, it should not spoil and you can melt it if it gets beat up (maybe add a bit more alcohol or glycerin to the melted mixture to replace any moisture that may have leached from the plate during use and storage but it should be good. I found that the plate shrunk just enough to store it in the frame I made it in so now I put the piece of plexi on the frame to keep it clean and moist and i can pop it on a shelf easy as pie;)

Hi Lynne, it lasted well for a week and then I decided to melt another plain geliten plate into it to make it bigger but I did not use additional glycerin and I went out of town for a couple of weeks and there was a subtle bloom here and there, nothing like the full out mold fest on a traditional plate I had kept to compare but I think the plate I mentioned in had started to breakdown, my bad. I posted another recipe link in the video description that a former teacher shared with me (cont.)

Today I've made 2 kinds of permanent Gelli Plates, really cheap. One I've made of the Silhouette Stamping Material and after that I've made a small round one of a silicone backing mat. Both work very wel. With the backing mat you can make a Gelli Plate in every shape you want. Ideal for Christmas ;-) Thank you so much for all your great video's and all the inspiration!
