Learn how to make a router jig that turns your router into a planer sled to let you surface large side boards.
Planing wide boards is always a challenge but with this planer jig you can plane almost any size board and get great results and with a clear plexiglass base you can see what you are doing as you plane.

A big thank you to Colin. This jig is far superior to the ones where you manually slide the router along a fixed carriage. Those designs tend to produce ripples in the wood; Colin's design does not. I made a few minor changes. I used 3/8" Lexan for added stability as it was readily available from my local commercial plastics fabricator who was kind enough to cut a precisely dimensioned piece for me including the round cutout - so no waste. My handles are 5" tall made from laminated 1 1/2" birch plywood that I had on hand and didn't feel like cutting them lower. As it turns out I like the taller handles better than shorter ones. I did not make Colin's rail guides, however. I simply stack and clamp various thicknesses of 1x3 MDF on their faces so no milling is required on the table saw as they are accurate as they are. Again thank you Colin for this wonderful jig. I know I was certainly dancing one after I made this!

Nice! Have you seen any problem with the MDF sagging because of humidity though?

Best planing jig I've seen on youtube.

Seen other jigs but I like that you move the entire jig around instead of moving it a little then running the router across the jig. This seems like a much better idea.

After too long a time since I was actively working with wood, I decided to get back into it. I've subscribed to many channels devoted to woodworking and your channel is absolutely the easiest for me to watch and understand! I look forward to the notices that you have a new one posted to RU-vid! Thanks so much!

Thanks Colin. Next month I'm making a pub/game table using a 36" live edge 2 1/2" cookie for the top. You've shown me a great way to plane it. Many thanks. And love your tutorials.

I like how this vid shows the end result (working!) prior to the build. Many don’t and I often get mentally lost while watching. Of course, I still got lost a little durign this video, but this is my fault. :) Well done.

Tablesaw could probably get you close enough as long as you take your time and have a good stop setup.

Another well done video Colin. I like several others wonder how you didn't cut into side rails.

This presumes you don't have a thickness planer or one that's wide enough, right? I mean, why else go to this trouble? Also, would a large drum sander do the trick as well? Just curious.

You should have put a stop ether side of the blade to stop it cutting into the side rails.

Interesting you used the hole saw. I always just used a straight bit larger than the one I was going to use in it

Gary Bowen isnt wrong....its your own job to make sure it doesnt hit the rails
@unbranrettable

O was thinking the same thing. He used the inner lining of ply wood on the rails to create a gap between the work piece and the rail, which made it easier to avoid cutting into the rail. You can just see that detail in the final image of the video.

Where did you buy the router bit???

I imagine a bit like that requires a pretty hefty router - what power rating is your router Colin?

Thank you for the info, good information. I like your version of the planing jig also, the ability to see what you are doing is cool. I also like how you showed what bit you use for this. I fear, however, my little 2 hp router won't handle a hit like that. What size would you recommend?

Can you use this to flatten multiple boards if you don't have a planer or a jointer?
@Shelbarino1

Having a Bench planer is naturally a great way to plane my epoxy resin cutting board but for those of us that don’t have expensive tools such as a planer, is it possible to use a Hand held electric planer? And is it possible to share a video for this if it is infact possible?

You mentioned you had to use the jointer to make the rail edges straight, but is there a way to accomplish that if you don't have a jointer? Thanks and God bless.

i guess your bench or whatever you clamp it to would have to be perfectly flat too?
@maxirvine6759

turtleclans1 no because if it's no level then none of it will be level but it's ok cause only one bit has gotta be flat

I'm new to wood working, I have a fixed speed, not variable speed, 2 HP 25000 rpm Kobalt fixed Router, will this router be sufficient for the router sled. I also have a uxcell 1/2-Inch Shank 2-Inch Cutting Dia, Double Flute Carbide Tipped Cleaning Bottom Router Bit; Will this combination of bit and router work on the router sled?
