Super comfy and it slides apart and knocks down flat for convenient carry and storage. Its simple construction but a lot of fun to build with the curves, especially when build using only hand tools.
This deck chair design has been around a while but I ended up making my own patterns using SketchUp. You can download the model and a PDF of the leg patterns on my website at www.renaissancewoodworker.com

Compass Plane is perhaps the coolest hand tool ever invented, and my absolute favorite to use.

Great project, Shannon. Might make a few of these next year to replace some crappy plastic Adirondack chairs on the back patio. Congrats also on the weight loss!

These days you'll find me on Instagram a fair bit but my Hand Tool School takes us 99% of my time when I'm not working at my day job. I'm not done here by any stretch of the imagination but I kinda have to prioritize a lot more now. Glad you liked the project.

You look awesome, Shannon! I see it because I'm about to embark on my own weight loss journey - again. Dreading it, on one hand, anticipating renewed health on the other... Oh, the chair look great too! :-) But you, in the chair, at the sea... Wouldn't have hurt my feelings to have had that view extended a while, there at the end. :-)

Good Job, I built the same ones from a plan by Simon Watts. The plan was in the book Easy Outdoor projects by Popular wood working. I included a couple of hand holds to make them easier to handle. Very comfortable chair.

Cutting those 2x8's with a hand saw, that's work! I'd use a hand held electric jig saw, a band saw, or if it would fit...my scroll saw. But how would pine 2x8 wood hold up in an outdoor chair. Maybe Duglas Fir?

Thanks. Great video and plans! If you made the legs from oak could you use 4/4 material ? Would it be strong enough?

RenaissanceWW awesome, only a stones throw to lie-nielsen, is that by design? We traveled the coast between Portland and Bar Harbor. We stopped into the Lie-Nielsen headquarters and I purchased my first quality hand tools. What a inspirational place to do some wood work. Great chair build. Thanks for the video.

@@jocofi5852 Ha no, I have no say in where my in-law's bought their place. They have been visiting that area since before Lie Nielsen existed actually. Did you get to take a tour of the factory while in Warren? Its a cool experience.
@jocofi5852

RenaissanceWW we were driving in the northwest part of the state before making our way down the coast at the end of the week. I missed the opportunity to tour the factory by an hour. But it was still fun to play with the tools and talk shop with the staff.

Hi Shannon, I haven’t seen any recent videos from you, I hope this means you are well and just enjoying life! I do have one question, do know of any references/guides on what “hang” should be for the various saw types? For example, my crosscut and miter are straight out from my forearm, while the dovetail tilts up about 20 degrees and the rip hangs down about 10 degrees… Thank you! Bob

Hi ya. The only trouble with exposed screws is the heads get hot and can burn sensitive skin

Use brass "trim screws" inserted where the head is just below the surface of the slat

You should have left the bow in the original board...it would have followed the curve of the rails. :)

so if I don't have a turning saw, a frame saw, or a compass plane, would a bunch of crosscuts down to just above the line, followed by removing the bulk of the waste with a chisel (bevel down) work well enough? (I mean i could cheat and use my bandsaw, but where is the fun in that?)
@RenaissanceWW
@RenaissanceWW 4 года назад
Sure, roughing to the line is the easy part and there are a number of tool combinations that can get you there. I would recommend at least a spokeshave however to finesse the curves back to the line.
