Hi. I'm waiting for my LasterMatic to arrive. It will be my first laser. One question: Why don't you always enable the air assist, regardless of the material you're cutting or engraving? Thanks.

Great subject for a video :). Short answer, using air when engraving makes the wood dirty. When cutting you mostly want it on.

Personally, I always run at least some air and I really haven't had much trouble with the wood getting dirty. It does seem to depend on the wood - I did have one particular run of birch plywood that is crazy sooty and would get filthy even without air on. Often when engraving I'll run a lot less air - barely open the valve (I'm hooked in to my shop air) just to maintain positive pressure around the nozzle to help keep the lens clean.
