I have been asked to make a mattress caddy for a friend. It is something that tucks between the mattress and box spring and hangs over the edge to hold glasses, phone, remote control, and maybe a book. It’s a great thing for kids or people with limited or no bedside table space. I would love to see you do a project like that since I haven’t been able to find a tutorial on it anywhere. Thanks for all your great tips and tricks and keep your awesome energy flowing!

Great idea! I've seen a couple videos on them but I really like the style of Rob's videos. I go through so many quilting videos but I always end up at Man Sewing.

Wow, Rob! Love those tigers! I could really use a short garden tool apron for pruners, gloves, hori hori digger & hand rake - those are always in use, & having them right to hand would be way better than having to remember where I left them!

Rob, I add a 1" finished strip of the same fabric across the width of the rollup where the tips of the drill bits will be. This helps to keep the tips from poking through the rollup.

Hi Rob. I’m so glad that you are taking requests. I am an auditor (the good kind) and I frequently travel to client sites where I need to be able to work. In addition to my computer I need to be able to carry my mouse, charging units, various cords and office supplies including pens, markers, pencils, sticky notes and paper clips. It is easy to purchase a pencil case or a case for cables/cords but I would love to be able to carry all of this stuff contained in one case. The charging unit for the computer and the mouse are somewhat bulky and they don’t fit well in any purchased supply cases. What do you think???

Rob, Well done! I love this tool caddy. It's gonna be for my notions (pencils, pens, extra cutters). Any ideas for my extra sewing machine feet. Maybe clear on the inside?

This is also good for carrying silverware in your lunchbox...I made one pocket about 3" wide and made a custom napkin out of the same fabric that fits in that pocket. Great for taking your own washable straws around so you can carry them home after they're dirty and don't get sticky beverages all over the inside of your purse/bag.

Nice quick and easy storage solution! I would love to see your take on a zip around case/wallet that opens and lays flat, with a gusset formed by the long zipper and the panel at the spine, like a book! I’ve made a few, for take along colouring books with markers (pockets one side, elastic dividers for markers on other), and one for my crochet hooks n stuff (customised with features that store everything!). The pattern was quite tricky and lengthy but comes out so professional. It uses foam stabiliser and peltex so very sturdy! I’d love to see a quicker easier version that doesn’t require steroids or weeks to make and recover! I know you’re more than clever enough to design something awesome!

Rob, I need a drawstring bag. Not a small, wimpy one, but one that would be nice sized to transport completed quilts back and forth to guild. Large enough to fit a queen or king-sized completed quilt without having to fold it a gajillion times. Perhaps with the option of having carrying handles on the sides too? Oh, and when you open it, the lamp comes out with the umbrella. Okay, joking about the last part, but you get the idea.

Colette, I wanted to direct your attention over to Jenny from the Missouri star quilt company. She has a tutorial on how to make three great big tote bags from a jellyroll. I made a tote bag that is big enough to carry my rotary mat, rulers, ironing pad AND a full size quilt. It isn’t drawstring, but it goes over your shoulder the way she makes it. You can even make the handles longer to carry it cross body. Just thought I’d let you know that that was over there. Happy sewing!

Personally if it was me I would make a over sized Toiletry style/shaving kit style bag if it is an heirloom type quilt. I am going to be making one in the very near future to replace the bag my 8 man tent came in. Just get the dimensions of the quilt after it is rolled up and make it with boxed corners. Now if your making it for a quilt that is more meant to throw on a hideabed when guest come over then I would make a sleeping bag style drawstring bag to store it in as you put it in the closet.

Great functionality; I like to use a decorative stitch (one that suits the pattern on the fabric) when top stitching this kind of project. That way if your stitching is not “perfect “, it doesn’t show as much, Lol!

Great job! I want to make a roll for my sharp clay and wax carving tools. They're the size of dental tools. Any suggestions for reinforcing the area where the sharp ends will touch to prevent them poking through over time? I'm not sure my sewing machine will sew through leather, so another material suggestion will be great. My machine is a Brother CS-6000i.

Great project Rob! I'm going to make one for each of my great nieces and nephew. they are into using fabric colouring pencils and these would be perfect for storing the pens. It's great to see another guy into this sort of stuff. After suffering a complete breakdown I have found machine embroidery and sewing have helped my mental health.

Thank you Rob!! Along these same lines, a hanging bag for my quilting tools: rotary tool, my Jack the Ripper tool, extra needles for my machine, etc. I’m using an old hanging toiletries bag. Works ok, but could be better. I like the suggestion below about working with vinal and mesh.

Hi Rob! I love this idea, thanks for sharing. I do have a request though. I made a "gear" bag for my first grandbaby. It is a cylindrical shape with interior zippered pockets. We use it to hold medicines and dosage servers, extra pacifiers, thermometer, and all the tiny things babies need. My problem is....the instructions are a nightmare. Do you have any alternatives? I am positive I will not be using this particular pattern ever again, but I have another grandbaby on the way. I did make a second bag thinking practice makes perfect, not. The idea of this bag was good but too frustrating to face again.

Any advice on modding this into a Double pointed needle roll? I have knitting needles from size 2.75mm to 6.5mm- a set 5 each. I have yet to find a quality roll that doesn't cost $40+.

Great project. I love organizational projects. Another way to deal with bulk in the corners is called a wrapped corner. I learned this from Nancy Zieman (Sewing With Nancy) years ago. It is a construction method that really helps with sharp corners. It's nice to see seeing projects that are attractive and functional. Keep up the good work.

Great tutorial, Rob! Since you asked... 😉 I would like to make a protective cover for my little camera - a point & shoot - with pockets for the memory cards. My challenge has been the closure at the end of the “box” shaped cover. Any ideas?

This is fantastic! I was just looking for a tool roll to put my fountain pens into. I found good ones, but they were way more complicated and I had to think about the fact that mine would be cotton and not leather and what differences in design I would make. All I had to do with yours is make the pockets longer to cover the pens entirely. Now I have a wonderful roll and don't have to choose between pens!

Rob if I wanted to make a curtain that was unlinked but still was on the energy efficiency side would the canvas linen be a good choice? I think I'll make a holder for all of my crochet hooks.
