Make an extreme Writing Focus Mode to shut out the world while you think and write. Here's how to do it, when to do it -- and when you really should not.
LINKS:
Support 58keys on Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=86274276
Join the Writer's Mailing list too: eepurl.com/gQTqTT
Buy my book on Amazon US: amzn.to/3KhF19P
Or Amazon UK: amzn.to/3IzZm94
If you buy through my Amazon links, they may chuck me a penny or two. Or they won't. Either way, it will never cost you anything extra.

Thanks, super useful info! I think I’ll set up a writing mode, a research mode and a general work mode, with varying levels of “allowed to contact me” permissions!

Thanks. Would you let me know it goes for you?

Thanks for this! I've been putting off making a focus mode for too long. This has been the encouragement I needed 🧐

I've never even used it. I typically write at night; everyone else being asleep is my focus mode. And I didn't know you *have* to pick on option for who can call you. I choose Neil Gaimen. We've never met. He's only minimally aware I even exist, him having liked something I'd posted on Threads once. But if that call ever comes I don't want to miss it.

Made me laugh. And now I’m wondering who my choice would be. I’ve still got William Goldman’s number in my phone from some project long ago; whatever it was, I never had the nerve to call him. Plus he’s dead now. And as good as his writing is, I rather went off him as a man. But still, I can’t bring myself to delete the number.

@@WilliamGallagher Oh wow. Yeah, I can understand that. If he'd *only* written _the Princess Bride_ that'd still be something to admire.

I'm just trying to figure out how far down I am on your 'like' list. I can tell you I never find you a distraction or interruption. Just a weekly essential. Having been watching and attending to lots of D-Day celebration happenings on your side of the pond.

Would you believe that I missed almost all of that? It was a head-down writing day and it’s only now, at the end of the evening that I’m catching up with the news. All of which is by way of avoiding answering you about the like list, which I’d best not reply to because I’ll sound like a crawler.

Focus Modes are the best feature. 🏆

I think that I think so too. I want to use them more but I tend to juggle a lot of things and it’s hard to make a Focus Mode that fits. Other than perhaps this extreme Writing one. Maybe it’s me, maybe I need to focus more.

@@WilliamGallagher The "Extreme Writing" sounds especially useful. The late Jerry Pournelle used a pre-notifications method he called 'The Monk's Cell", which contained only a desk, chair, and a bare-bones PC with nothing on it but his writing software.

@GordonRunklePhoto I was enjoying that right up to the PC at the end.

"Wouldn't be it be good to get rid of the constant nagging?! Oh, by the way, don't forget to subscribe..." Yes, that was funny. Isn't youtube wonderful. Still, at least it wasn't "but, before that! first take a look at this new exciting vacuum cleaner!!!!"

I really like your name there. I’ve not looked for sponsors for 58keys but I work on a podcast for a client who does and I am so very relieved that every time I’m involved, the sponsor has been one I could recommend - and that was relevant. There are some very strange - oh! I forgot. I was once asked to promote pillows or bed linen or something and when I explained that had no connection to my topic, they said okay, what if we up the payment to $20? I declined.
