Team Wristify (www.embrlabs.com) has developed a bracelet that allows you to instantly heat or cool yourself. The team presented their prototype for the Intel Make It Wearable Challenge on November 3, 2014 in San Francisco. Learn more about Make It Wearable and see highlights from Finale event at makeit.intel.com.
Concept design by Niccolo Casas (niccolocasas.com).

seems like one of the best ideas yet for wearable tech that i've seen.

so are they just faking the temperature change to the body or do they actually cool or heat it down respectively up? Because if I am really hot, I dont want to make my brain think I am cool enough, maybe resulting in a heatstroke
@m93sek
@m93sek 10 лет назад
***** so what then is this rapid cooling about? "the brain perceive it as a much stronger effect."

The problem working in every office building I've worked in is that they run the air conditioning to a low temperature that is too cold for everyone; men and women. This is where *everyone!* is complaining that it's 65 degrees in the middle of summer where it's maybe in the 90's outside and no one can get the maintenance staff to adjust it--no one, not management, not anyone. LEED certified buildings do not have LEED certified maintenance staffs. This is compounded (energy savings wise) by staff running heaters just to be able to keep their toes from freezing and their fingers able to type--in SUMMER! Memo's go out--NO HEATERS! But people use them anyway. IN SUMMER with the Air Conditioning blasting. This is a management structure problem. Top managers tend to have suites that are better controlled environments and are also in and out of the office. But I've noticed that no one can tell the maintenance staff what to do--they don't answer to anyone and everyone seems afraid of them. They are typically run by an iron-handed manager that no one dares to mess with. I've seen staff try to help and then get demoted and assigned to the night shift just for speaking up. Not even the CEO will mess with the Maintence department. There should be EPA spot checks and fines or tax breaks--some incentive. What a company will do, however, is, instead of fixing the problem and confronting Maintenence is to threaten heater-using staff--that's easier.

This is actually an idea I could get behind and support, very smart indeed and a very green idea. Bravo five stars

Interesting idea. It's the 'pulse under the tap' to cool down thing, made smart.

This would work wonderfully for anyone working out in the elements. Especially during summer months. Cooling a person's blood temperature could prevent heat sickness, stokes, and dehydration.

I want one. It seems to be very useful. One of the most interesting topics of the people is the weather and the temperature (as how we should dress us to hang out) and with this thing all those kind of topics will be a lower trouble. It should work to athletes, but also to people who wants to dress more clothes on spring and summer. If it works you could make of this thing a fashion thing and maybe with time sell more models (different kinds of colour and forms, maybe more elegant or just casual, and special models by authors such as singers, actors and designers. Do not forget that vein design, it could be very useful for in a future). Good luck, i really like your project!

Thermoelectric materials are too inefficient and high power for a standalone wristwatch. You're going to have to lug around a big battery to make this work

I really like this idea. I take a lot of meds many that have chills or heat sweats as a side effect I can't constantly adjust the thermostat to make me comfortable I live with 5 other people. This would really help me

i just wonder how they are going to go around the power supply problem, i've tried making something similar and the problem i kept running into is power. not sure how efficient both in terms of power and in terms of comfort this is gonna be but good luck.

So basically you are going to put all that energy from those portable batteries into the environment just to make your body feel a little comfortable. Wow. Real GENIUS... Peltier cells are very inefficient devices that though create a temperature difference, in the process also dumps all the battery's energy into the environment in the form of heat. We are better off using refrigerant based cooling systems like our A/Cs.

So, it's just a heatsink on your arm? Hot would it actively cool you? More than that, how would it warm you up? *how* does it work, exactly? What makes it different from a chunk of metal? Is it powered? How?
@BeeJay120
@BeeJay120 10 лет назад
A peltier device is a thermoelectric cooler/heater that converts electrical energy into thermal energy (yes, it's powered). When used, one side gets warmer whilst the other side gets cooler. Essentially the heatsink is attached to deal with the temperature of the other side of the peltier unit.

It basically warms or cools your blood that circulates around your entire body. Athletes have ice cold gloves they stick their hands into and it cools their whole body.

Guys this is simply previous technology strapped to your wrist its just a peltier cooler something used to cool and heat mini fridges for probably ten years now in other words this is nothing new and basically a peltier cooler when electricity is applied all heat is moved to one side and all cold is moved to the to the other

It's a cool idea, but I don't see it being very practical. I understand the idea behind it, sort of like putting an ice pack on your forehead in the summer to cool down, but it certainly wouldn't be a long term solution.
@BobVahn

i dont get it, is this device that mess with your brain about which one hot or cold?
@JBDuncan
@JBDuncan 10 лет назад
I would like to try it because I don't see how it would work. If it did though it would be amazing on them summer nights, when you bang your head on you bed post cursing at your body for not allowing you to sleep.

So a device to make you think you're warm or cool you down... I've also come up with a similar idea for being warmer in the house. I put on a hoodie, or another layer. Too hot, take one off. I have most of this tech already in my wardrobe and it does actually warm you up or cool you down.
@mchobbit2951
@mchobbit2951 2 года назад
For most of the year (when it's not summer) I end up in a cycle of cold--sweater on, 15 minutes later sweat starts forming under my pits, sweater off, 15 minutes later, hands and toes get cold, so sweater back on. If a simple wristband could do this without me having to spend all day taking off and putting on stuff, it wouldn't just be more practical but also more comfortable. Especially when you aren't at home and always end up having to drag along a jacket you realized was too warm or take one in case you freeze later on. Plus, wearing layers STINKS. I always feel like a cocoon plus so much more stuff to wash.

They just combined a heat sink from an old computer to a low end wrist watch strap. Wow
@Shadd0wblade7512
@Shadd0wblade7512 9 лет назад
+Daniel Sullivan No, there is a thermo electrical conductor powerd by a battery under the heat sink allowing the side that comes in contact with the skin to be cold and the other side that is attached to the heat sink gets warm and the heat sink brings away the heat that is made. It's called a Peltier cell.
