I love all of your videos. I'm new to the world of knifemaking, and am very envious of your workshop! I made the foldover sheath from your "zero to hero" video and it came out perfect! My favorite blade shape here is the one with the c-tech and elm handle, but my favorite handle materials is the mammoth, so... that's me. I don't like the artificial materials on the handles. Just my pref. Also, when I'm not learning to forge/make knives, etc with one son, I'm out hunting for fossils and minerals with my other son, so the mammoth bark is extra special! Thank you for all of your videos. I especially like that yoiu allow and show mistakes and move on. Its good to see your skill is incredible, but even you make mistakes.

One of the things I really enjoy about making knives is that I get to play with different sizes and characteristics. The only absolute I’ve come to is that control/feel is imperative to a good knife. The larger the knife the greater need for finger well and/or guard. Everyone has a different feel and hand shape which makes custom knives all the more valuable to those that have the smarts to go that route.
@benr8772
@benr8772 3 года назад
Great classic profiles on all of them. My thoughts on the handle material: the Ctek is cool, and I love natural burl, but together they're a little busy. Would rather see some subtle material next to the Ctek, single color Micarta, faux ivory, etc. Thanks for the demonstration of how fast a grinder can hog steel!

The mammoth and elm burl ones are probably the prettiest and i reckon they would fly off any sales desk. However! The fordite one's blade shape would lend itself to being a great skinner with a bit of double duty for boning out large cuts of meat, with the necessary finesse to also do some fiddly work on smaller fish and game. Its a classic shape that works really well.

Now I know how and when to use my 36g belt on my high speed 2x42 Norse belt grinder! Sweet! Any other application with low grit belts in the little beast is too too risky, especially since there's a bit of flexion between the tracking wheel and drive wheel. I've added a brace, and a new, DIY fabricated tool rest, but there's still a little bit, which throws off accuracy. In my opinion, if one masters the little beast, a 2x72 is likely going to be a trip through the lily fields on a warm spring day a few hours after a light morning shower bringing an iridescence to bursting blooms of sparkling wildflowers never seen before cascading into a cool pool of water... would normalizing the steel be necessary for this style of grinding and the heat it generates? i only have a forge so holding a specific temp for extended times or allowing a very slow cooling is kind of tough(I do have a steel bucket of vermiculite though). id like to profile like this though; currently, I am taking it kind of slow. when the blade gets to hot for me to touch with bare skin it goes in the water real quick.

I have never made a gut hook mainly because I don't care to use them.

Definitely love that maple with mammoth bark! Not a fan of the harpoon blade (sharpened clip) shape though. At least not on that little knife

For me 1.6mm thick blades only have one place and that's the kitchen, 3mm minimum for my own preference.

Are there any belts this efficient for a crappy harbor freight 4x36? The ones from Lowe’s suck bad. At least that’s what I’m assuming the problem is. Takes forever to grind anything

Hello Airin, Mass production is definitely accelerated with this grinding machine. But it looks like you need to change the sander every 2-3 blades. How many grit abrasives did you make these knives with, man?👍🙂🙋

Happy Sunday Volkan! I get about 10-15 blades out of each 36grit belt. I use fresh belts to grind the bevels and old belts to hogg off material
