Can you make money with public domain books? Publishing public domain books on Amazon can be a viable side hustle, and it's an interesting business since your "inventory" is available for free online.
This is the art and science of republishing classic literature - where the copyrights have expired - and earning passive royalties when your version sells.
Because these works are so old, they’re available online for free - but many Amazon shoppers and Kindle owners will pay to have them delivered straight to their device.

I make about £66,000 a year selling public domain books, but it's not easy. There has been a steep learning curve and honestly, working with Amazon can be a real pain sometimes. I had my account suspended once because I didn't understand copyright law properly and have had two copyright claims against me. You have to make doubly sure the books you are selling really are in the public domain because you do not want to get a nasty cease and desist letter from the estate of some dead author. Amazon will always take their side.

Hey can you share how to doubly check them? There are books I like and see reprinting shops in my country and would like to understand which ones legal or not. Obviously not for like recent books..

You haven't been able to do this for 6 or 7 years now. Amazon stop taking PD books that long ago. The only exceptions are for things of which there aren't any current copies already being sold, and all the big sellers were taken years ago.

Not quite. To publish something that they already have, you have to DIFFERENTIATE it from the extant edition. This can be by adding material (like annotations, translations, or illustrations) or by offering it at a lower price. kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200743940

@@studogable Have you ever written a book with footnotes? I only have once, but tracking down info for those notes may just rank as the toughest part of it. Then you have to format them for the ebook and put in the links as well as back-links for them. Also, the books you get from places like Gutenberg are barely formatted at all, so you end up ripping out all the formatting and starting from scratch. It's a big job which requires a strong knowledge of html, css, and knowing a ton of workarounds to solve all the ebook and reading app glitches and incompatibility problems out there, and with over a hundred different reading devices on the market, you better really know your stuff. I've owned ebookpioneers.com for seven years now. Believe me, formatting books the right way is not for the faint of heart.

@@wildbillhackett I have, yes. And I can see your point. It's work, maybe more work than it's worth. If you've noped out on it, that's OK. Some stuff just isn't worth it. Like Ricky Nelson said, sometimes it's better to just drive a truck.
