First of all I love your you tube site, frakking creations. I also love the video. Very informative. I did not know that RF acts like water. A small defect in the Faraday pouch can allow RF to escape. Other google sites, suggested using Aluminum foil as a Faraday insulator. I tried it. And much to my surprise, Aluminum foil it wrapped out well, works. The test was to bring your car key near the door and tried to open it. Also tried to turn on you car with and without the aluminum package. Thanks again for the video. You should test a similar aluminum bag. Since aluminum is relatively cheaper.
Thanks for the comments. We appreciate that. You are correct that aluminum will work too. Several points to keep in mind is that some aluminum foil comes in different thicknesses and the cheap ones are often too thin and tear easily. There is also aluminum tape but note that a lot of aluminum tape use non-conductive adhesive which will cause adjacent tape not to conduct properly to form a good cage. Copper is also denser than aluminum at the same thickness so you may need more layers of aluminum, which could make the cost difference not too different. In some cases a proper cage may not be enough and signals can actually penetrate the cage if the thickness of the material is not thick enough. That's where it will matter what material is used.
I’ve added three layers of copper tape to a large plastic bag, but my phone is still receiving phone calls. I’ve tried to roll the bag as opposed to using ziploc seal or magnets. Is rolling the bag closed keeping my phone accessible to calls? Do I need to find better magnets to close the bag as opposed to using magnet tape?
So you have a link to faraday tape that is pretty expensive for tape but i didnt see you use any faraday tape, i only seen you use the copper tape so im a bit confused. Where did you use the faraday tape?
I provide the copper tape and faraday fabric tape so that viewers can choose what they want to use. Both can block RF radiation and have adhesive that is conductive to work best (unlike aluminum tape which typically has non-conductive adhesive) I don't use faraday tape to make the bag here but I do use it to make the faraday book box in my other video. The copper tape is heavier so it may make sense for some to use the faraday tape instead. It's up to you.
What would we put in them ? And you would likely have to keep it in the bag until the attack happens, which you would never know when… so taking anything out to use until then is risky.
True. Though typically, wouldn't reading the RFID require the crook to be close to you with the scanner? Plus timing would have to be right for the crook to be next to you or near you and ready to read your RFID items when you do take them out. Faraday bags are not perfect but they do serve some purpose.
Update: my Faraday bag with three layers of copper tape have now blocked cell reception and Bluetooth, but it's still connected to wifi! What do I do to fix this? Do I add more layers? Do I not use magnet tape? I am not only using magent tape but rolling the top of the bag down twice to close.
It may depend on the thickness of your copper tape. If it's thinner then you may need more layers. Usually, if the layers are good enough, it will be any other areas where there is an opening like the top of the bag. The two sides of the bag must maintain conductivity. So the lip on both sides should touch metal to metal to maintain conductivity. Rolling the bag opening could help but I would still say that both sides should maintain conductivity at the top. The way I did it in the video is to have the tap from both sides wrap around the lip at the top. This way when the magnet snaps closed, both sides of the bag touch metal to metal at the top lip and maintain conductivity. Another thing to note is that copper tape, like any other metal object, when bent back and forth over time will break. So if you regularly roll the copper tape, it could form small holes where the metal breaks. Hope this helps.
idk aboot putting magnets in a bag meant to carry electronics. Might it not be better to double up the bags to go tip to toe like when you're using bin bags for oversized things?
I don't think it will affect too many electronics other than magnetic ones like old audio/data tapes, floppy disks, hard disk drives, etc. Even cell phones nowadays have MagSafe cases that have metal plates on the back that allow the phone to be attached to a charger or holder that uses strong magnets. The case attaches to the holder using magnetism. Is there a specific concern you have with what the magnets will damage? And, it's up to you how you want to create and use your faraday bag. If you want to double up the way you mentioned, that can work too. You will just have to test it to make sure no signals are leaked.
Probably a larger ziplock style bag you can get from some dollar stores or camping stores. If you don't mind me asking, how come you are using it for your oxygen machine?

It probably won't work well, if it works at all. The reason is that the aluminum tape usually uses adhesive that is not conductive. As you layer one layer of tape on another it's important that they conduct with each other. This will maintain the RF shielding. Also, the aluminum is less dense than copper so you will likely need more layers.
could you tell me does the copper tape work as well as the faraday tape. The price difference is huge. the copper tape is 1/2 price of the faraday tape. Thanks.
I haven't used the tape in the same way to make a Faraday bag so I won't know if the durability is better or worse when comparing the two. The Faraday tape is made using metal infused threads that supposedly can flex more easily, which could allow it to last longer. In general, for the bag both materials will eventually fail from flexing and use. That's why I came up with the DIY portable Faraday box video. It should last longer but I still have to verify.
It's possible but not ideal. Aluminum tends to have an oxide layer form on it that is non-conductive. Also the adhesive used is typically not conductive too. When you apply multiple layers of the aluminum tape on top of each other, the layers may not end up being electrically conductive and will not work as well to prevent signal leaks. Copper tape will not oxidize like this and the adhesive used is typically conductive. Best to stay with the copper tape or the shielding tape that I linked to in the video description. Don't worry about an oxide layer on the aluminum tape. Just spray some acrylic lacquer on the surface and no layer will form; also you can stick a layer of ducttape on top of the aluminum tape. Aluminum tape works fine and it's cheaper than copper tape.
