There is an argument that the entire assembly should have been cleaned and dried before adding new grease. A little messy, but all of the wear particles will continue to wear the components, even with new grease.

Thanks for taking the time to produce the video. Excellent. Newbie at bike maintenance. Just like to share the most important part about this whole procedure I learnt. Look carefully at the Crank Puller that you will use. I did not realease it has two parts to it. Make sure you match the size of puller end to mate with the face of crank shaft. I had to modify the small end to make mine fit. Initially, nearly destroyed the crank arm. I've just done 1000km on the bike. There wasn't much grease inside the motor. After following your directions and test riding. Results.....wow, now as smooth as silk. Highly recommend doing it. I also used Mobil grease 28. Expensive, but worth every bit.

Excellent video and well narrated. One constructive comment though...I found it unnecessary to remove the crank on the Bafang BBS01. Simply remove the pedal, then undo the crank ring, slide it over the crank arm to remove, the same for the motor cover. This leaves the gearing exposed for regreasing as you described. Reverse the process to complete the task 👍

Just bought a new BBS02 motor as a backup to the one I've been using for a couple of years. After seeing some of the videos about greasing the motor, I decided to take a look at the situation with the new one. Next to NO grease on the gears! Couldn't see ANY on the meshing surfaces! Greased it thoroughly and will have a look at it again in 1K miles. No doubt greasing it when brand new will help it last a long time.

When I did this the motor cover was stuck on to the casing so that I had to pry it apart, then a couple inches of the gasket stuck to the cover the rest to the casing, and it tore at one spot. I applied the grease then I had difficulty getting the cover back on until I rotated the inner gear (ratchet ring ?). So now I guess I'll have to order a gasket and tear into it again.

I don't get the obsession with so much grease....... over greasing can cause extra friction, loss of power and heat build up. grease is a substitute solution where oil can't be used or easily contained. A good quality grease should be used that matches the material of the gears .....Clean out the old grease before packing with new stuff ......it task is to provide cushioning as well as lubrication. IMHO.

Any guides on M800 motor?
@killerbeau95
@killerbeau95 2 года назад
I’ve just purchased this BBS HD and installed it and wrote it for 200 miles, the issue I’m having is the motor will provide too much resistance or something is to my peddling so anything under three speed on nine speed mode it’s like paddling against the current or as if the brakes were on. I know it’s nothing to do with the wait because for some reason when the motor has been off for a night or a long time and you initially try to pedal without turning the motor on there is no or little resistance it’s only after activating the motor and paddling for a moment that something engages inside which starts the resistance again. Of course the motor works and rolls you up the hill good but the problem is it’s like there is the brakes on all the time which I think can cause extra lots of battery to lose as well as it’s near impossible to go anywhere when the motor is off or in low PAS. I am hoping somebody knows any solution to this I’ve read maybe I have tightened the motor too much as a lot of people recommended it can loosen but also maybe the nylon gear has already went out or they’re just needs to be way more grease inside any help would be appreciated I have not looked inside yet but just disassembled everything

-20 shouldn't hurt the rider if they're properly dressed. I'd be more concerned about the battery. Best to keep the battery inside when not in use. While the battery is in use it should create some of it's own heat and not get too cold for a while.
@JSROOKS
@JSROOKS Год назад
Yes, of course the additional grease will be adding to the internal friction of the gearcase, and moreso when the grease is cold. One way to test this is to put an ammeter on the power leads before greasing and after greasing, and bring the motor up to same speed both times, and compare the amperage draw. Then let it get cold and try it again. With the amount of grease added in this video, the difference could be significant. Remember though, you're only measuring the motor spinning on a stand; it's not really working as it would be on a ride. Maybe less grease, but still have plenty?? Need more data.

@rverdonk3
@rverdonk3 7 месяцев назад
From what I can say after riden for 8400km on the stock controller without any problems. Dont ride it to hard at a high pass level. When the cadence is to low and you are riding into high gears, lots of watts turning into heat, if you possible dont use your gears right. Specially at the summer, if you life in a country with a hot climate. Allways use your gears right, shift low enough when going uphill. If you can feel lot of resistance on your pedals going up, then it will also be very tough for motor, and the watts your motors uses will be send into heat in your controller and tough for motor granny, pinion, nylon gears and motor copper stator windings. Limit your max amps to 18 amp, the controller from the BBS02 cant handle 25 amps for long, BBSHD has a much better controller. reprogram your controller for smoother cycling. Sometimes at summer when i drive at high pass, the controller feels very hot (even below 18 amps)after you recognize this, quickly lower your pass level. I'm going to install an temp sensor (like i read on the internet)to keep an eye on the temperatures of the controller.
@mikethomas6051

From my experience, owning bbshd for 5years or so, I've had one controller error, it happens, my advice is upgrade the motor and battery connection, I had anderson poles and they melted and come loose, went to xt90, disconnect the battery when charging to avoid sparks, don't buy cheap a battery, avoid programming the pas settings to stupid currents and percentage, same goes with the throttle setting ( can cause alot of issues ) being to high power. Bafangs paper gaskets are crap, use some rubber gasket sealant instead, it forms a better waterproof seal, check the sealant that covers the controller so its not getting any moisture in, check all wires to make sure they are not loose, apparently this is the main reason for errors. I've covered over 3000+ miles on one bike and 700 miles on my back up, 1 controller fail and one stator issue.

This is only 1/2 of the job, you definitely have to clean out the old contaminated grease then remove the crankshaft and lubricate the "Needle Bearings" they have very little grease from factory and they are often near dry or starting to rust @ 1500 miles. Not greasing the drive system in its entirety is the #1 cause of BBS02 motor failure, a very expensive mistake.

Y'all missed a Step: Step #1 - Order a NEW Gasket for the cover and have it on hand prior to disasembly. Factory gaskets will more often than not tear to pieces the first time the cover is removed. Any gaps between the cover and case WILL leak grease. Side note: You really only need to lubricate the main output gear. Excess will transfer to the drive pinion. A better alternative to the Mobil 1 is Lucas "Red-n-Tacky". It'll stay stuck to the gears longer and resist flinging off on the inside of the case. All this tips I've given are from maintaining 3 BBSHD powered Bikes.
@martinlong8739
@martinlong8739 3 года назад
Mobil Red n Tacky is NOT a synthetic grease but petroleum based so may have an adverse effect in the nylon gears inside the motor. Best stick to synthetic Mobilgrease 28. Shell Aeroshell 22 or Mobil SHC.
@SternLX
@SternLX 3 года назад
@@martinlong8739 1st of all. Red 'N' Tacky is not a Mobil product. It's by Lucas. And 2nd it is indeed a Synthetic Complex Lithium EP grease. The stock nylon gear in the Bafang motors comes from the factory coated in a non-EP White Lithium Grease.
@JohnSmith-ch9lp
@JohnSmith-ch9lp 3 года назад
@@SternLX Yes of course, my mistake, as you say it is Lucas, I use Red n Tacky a lot. However it is petroleum based so who knows how it will react with the Bafang nylon gear. It is not synthetic. @davemeise2192
@davemeise2192 3 года назад
They used WAYYYY too much grease. It only needs to be lightly applied and only after the gears have been cleaned beforehand. They didn't even clean the old contaminated grease off of the cover. When they took it apart note how much grease was on the cover? After greasing your bike as they show and after using your bike for a month or so pull the cover again and see the mess left behind from the excess grease! It has no place to go and after awhile it will force itself into everywhere, even places it isn't supposed to go.
@Biktrix
@Biktrix 3 года назад
We appreciate your comment, but in the 10k+ Bafang mid-drives that we've sold, this is the best process we have found. Many of the greasing issues arise in these motors because Bafang doesn't put enough in from the factory
@davemeise2192
@davemeise2192 3 года назад
@@Biktrix Thank you for the quick reply. I have had the same issues with the final drives on shaft driven motorcycles. The solution was to clean and then apply a small amount of grease to the splines each time the rear wheel was changed. I realize the Bafang motor is a different item, however grease will get into everything and too much grease creates its own issues. A small amount, perhaps a thin line down the centre of the drive wheel or a small amount applied with a small grease gun to get into the root of the gear teeth would work as effectively? Repeated every year perhaps as part of ones annual maintenance process?
