Making your own DIY 4x4 Soft Shackle isn't as hard as it looks, but how much they can actually hold after you make them is a big unknown!
In this video I show you how to make your own soft shackle out of 12mm Dyneema rope.
I wouldn't advise making your own soft shackle for 4x4 recoveries.

Thanks so much for running us through that. I'm going to make four of them. Of course I'm not going to use them for my personal 4WD recoveries. I would not dream of such a thing. I'll hang two on the lounge room wall, and give my wife the other two for Christmas. 👍🏼😊

Big thanks from Texas, mate! Thanks to your very well done video, I whipped up a couple of my own soft shackles, using a spare length of 3/8 inch Dyneema that I had laying around. Used 7.5 feet of rope, with the twine tied at 20 inches from the top of the loop. Sweet as... 👍👍

Just finished my first one! Awesome vid! Thanks for the instructions! Came out great for me! Only modification I made from your video was instead of using the twine to hold the spot on the knot, I passed the rope back through itself to use the rope itself to make a knot there! Thanks so much! Can't wait to try mine out!

i seek adventure, but i do it in the USA. That said, awesome vid, whilst doing my laundry i made one of these, and then used it later at my own risk. After much investigation, i also determined the same taper method on the rope is used for syn rope repair. I am learning australian to better apperciate your vids. The australian to America dictionary translates "Dynamo" to "really cheap chinese synthetic winch rope". I have that cheap blue winch rope on my winch, its actually quite strong, single line pull of 12000 pounds during the great South Texas snow storm of 2021. (thats 5000 kilos approximately) No issues. i use my winch alot. Keep the vids coming, making more of these, they are awesome.

Thanks for teaching us Yanks about Aussie off-roading! I was going to buy a metal "fid" to use to make eye-splices for a bridle, a winch rope extension and also some soft shackles using 3/8-inch 12-strand synthetic rope. The metal fids on Amazon for 3/8-inch line are expensive. I was happy to find that a pair of plastic knitting needles like you used in this video were less than 10 dollars. Got the Wright Products/Boye Jumbo Plastic Knitting Needle Pair 14"-Size 19/15mm from Amazon today and cut off the ends. Perfect fit for 3/8-inch.

I made two out of some winch line I had laying around. They are the most used piece of gear I have now. Several pulls using a kinetic rope and used with my winch as well. Very well put together video and presentation. Thank you so much. I just now need to find some sheathing to put around them to help with fraying.

Thank you. Great on the Brion Toss button knot. It should come out at around 230% of rated strength for the line. I assume it breaks at the loop. If instead a diamond knot is used the expected strength is about 170%, requires a hard knot, and breaks at the knot. I think that with smaller shackles, hardening is will improve performance, although not as much needed as with diamond knot.

One of my coworkers is a high wire works stunt choreographer & he uses soft shackles in most of his wire harnesses. The needs of film safety coordinators & designers make these a must have item vs. a traditional piece of hardware. Naturally his are made out of 6 or 8 mm depending on the demands but the product is still safe to use under the right conditions & only by tested pros.

I made the assumption that this was a diamond knot. That first “symmetrical” configuration being the carricks bend, the next step would then be to run the ends around the other side and through the middle. But when I do this, running the ends back out through the middle undoes that last step! I will try again, but I really thought it was first a diamond knot then some splicing of the ends.
