I always love any idea that converts "waste" into something else usable =) Great idea! A simple, yet elegant, solution to cutting down on costs for your chickens, and recycling back into the earth to boot! I hear chicken bedding makes great compost or even mulch.

So cool. I've been doing this for about five months and love the results. The birds haven't complained and tend to scratch it even better than wood chip. Glad to see someone else using their noggin. Just found you and I"m already impressed. I listened to a podcast with you yesterday and learned more abouat REKO Rings. LIKE that business model better than CSA or working festivals. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Word yes yes yes! The best $50 I have spent ! I use it in my worm farms and compost!

Great tip. Woodchips work really well for chicken bedding. Spreading about an inch of biochar around chicken bedding works great for basically eliminating smells. In addition, this is a great way to activate the carbon.

My heavy duty mulcher works well too. Wads of paper, leaves, sticks, BRANCHES, and more. :D :D

I started composting yesterday (tumbler) and have been doing some worm bin stuff and bokashi just recently too, but yea. Using that shredder daily for a while now to collect and shred every piece of carbon resource (or paper waste if you prefer). Such a useful tool.

Thanks! I bought a paper shredder from Target for $46. I use grocery store ad paper and it takes only a few sheets for my small coop. Great idea. Any ideas for cheap/free chicken feed?

That seems like such a great idea! Only thing I would be concerned about is all the chemicals from the ink.
@DiegoFooter
@DiegoFooter 4 года назад
Keep in mind you are touching that same ink with your hands potentially absorbing any of that in. I think it's safe.

Lol, I shred my empty toilet paper rolls and use them in my garden. Worms love it.

I ball mine up and put them in the compost. They break down so fast!

Genius, but does the ink or bleach affect your plants?

This was my one question too.

but will the inc and plastic on some paper will corrupt the compost and make it full of toxic wastes ?
@gavinmatthews5618
@gavinmatthews5618 4 года назад
As far as the plastic windows you rip those out any shiny or glossy inks don't use as they BBA inks .
@DiegoFooter
@DiegoFooter 4 года назад
I don’t shred plastic. I don’t shred glossy. So it should be fine. There’s more pollution coming from the sky than there is in that paper.

SO SUPER COOL I CAN TOTALLY USE THIS FOR MY FLOCK OF FOUR HENS DO YOU HAVE A VLOG FOR YOUR COMPOST DESIGN BIN? IT LOOKS INTERESTING.

Yes, if you search through some of the older videos you can find ones on the "trash can" composting method. I will be doing an updated version in the near future.

Would basic shredded paper (strips) work as well, or do you think it needs to be confetti?

I would suggest not using it in the nest boxes. I found that it sticks to the eggs and is hard to get off.
@DiegoFooter

Yep. We have that problem when eggs break. Good point.

Didn’t work for me. My chickens eat it obsessively like it’s candy. I got worried about all that ink.
@belindaroadley
@belindaroadley 4 года назад
Ink isn't bad these days, unless you're trying to be organic. I'd be more concerned about the paper gumming up their works. :)

They eat the paper, eat toxic inks, then die.
