Great video! My Grandfather and I were talking the other day and he told me how he made his own hookah using a bike pump and old regulator (not the safest.) He grew up is Mesa (AZ) and used it in the canals. One day somebody approached him and asked if he wanted to trade for it. He said yes and ended up with a TV.

I love your channel @alec peirce scuba ! I decided to lighten my poor back after 15 years with twin cylinders and Navy Seal's style rides from the car trunk to the water .. Definitely, at the age of 37, I'm already destroyed to keep on my back all that weight .I tried three years ago a single 15liters tank on a floating cart with wheels and the setup was fine using a 19ft tailored dive hose.. Unluckily the sand isn't weight friendly and to transport the equipment by hands was a big effort, including the dpv. Now I'll use again that hose, excluding the first stage and tuning the IP on the second stage. A small 12V oilless diaphragm with a suction filter and a personal filter type for the outlet will do a good job to stay in the shallows if modified to work when needed only...I'm a lone diver too and honestly the most scary thing I've seen until now is the panicking crowd's faces when in group...

Another great video sir thanks for sharing thought some of you guys might be interested in a slightly cheaper way but quality way to do your surface breather set up, I use a US divers full face mask with a rear entry for the air so it comes out the back of your head it's a square fitting into that I made my own fitting put a good 3/4 inch external diameter half inch internal diameter hose on to it it saves me having a regulator because I breathe directly out of the mask. The one real advantage I find this I found while testing my setup so underwater I'm at about 20 ft I have a leak it's mine are at first but then slightly gets worse then the valve let go that I had made cuz it wasn't properly done the first time I tried it but because I had the mask on and it's properly sealed I put my hand over the back of the mask to block the air entrance and I had air left in the mass that I could breathe on my way back up, had I been using a regulator it would have been slightly more dangerous because I wouldn't have had that extra air. I improved my valve design it's not actually a valve it's just a fitting and I've had no problem since then. I did a video on my RU-vid channel on how to construct this and shows all materials needed, Keith Robinson SCUBA 101 is the name of the video series.

It´s a good and simple description of a hookah surface supplied system, and is as described ok for shallow diving. - I see a few questions about diving deeper, using a compressor for air supply, type of hose to use. Some advice regarding this... If using a compressor, use a oil free compressor and a filtration system to get air of breathing quality, and if the compressor is driven by a gas/diesel engine- make sure the air intake for the compressor can´t get the exhaust fumes from the engine... Exhaust gas in breathing air is lethal... An oil-lubricated compressor can be used-but only with the right filtration system. (Normally a charcoal filter is in the system). A compressor should have a volume tank, with a drain valve- that’s helping getting the moisture out of the air. From a tank supply a regulator used for oxygen normally have the adjustment of 2:nd stage pressure (o2 welding regulator) just change the fitting from O2 to air on the regulator... Then you have the possibility to change pressure according to diving depth. -In commercial surface supply diving, the supply hose is normally a 3/8" hose and supply pressure from 0-18 meter is normally 8,5 bar, at 30 meter supply pressure is 11 bar and at 50 meter 16,4 bar. And the flow volume of air of 62,5 RVM as a minimum =125 litre at 10meter 187,5 at 20meter 250liter at 30 meter and so on... a hose of 1/4" can be used to about 18 meters, but flow restriction gets to big for deeper diving. In commercial diving there is always a non-return valve on the mask/helmet from the surface supply hose to prevent squeeze if a hose brakes. If the supply pressure is to low or flow in the air supply is to low the diver can "outbreath" the gas supply - it feels like running out of gas on a scuba tank... you don’t get the air you need- happens if you dive over the systems limits... Hose used in commercial diving has to be resistant to kinks and pressure tested to verify quality, and safe= not giving of fumes or in any other way contaminates the air.(Barfell divers hose for example is a good one). And think about that it is still the same physical rules for hookah diving as for scuba diving, don’t hold your breath going up, don’t dive to deep to long and so on… And if you don’t know how to dive safe, get trained so you don’t hurt your self!

Love your channel...and on this topic, you've wandered off into something I've done for years...diving with surface supply. I 'gold dredge' (in both salt and fresh water)...with depths from 3-ft to 20-ft (often in a dry-suit, due to northern water temps). My dredge runs a 30-hp Yanmar diesel, powering not only an 8-inch suction dredge pump, but it also powers a single stage air compressor (like you might find in a workshop). The pump head is mounted to the dredge frame, and belt-driven off the Yanmar v-belt. The compressor takes in it's air from an elevated intake (with first-stage filter), compresses the air to 120-psi and stores it in a mounted aluminum tank on the dredge. On the output side, the air passes throughdryer, then a 50-micron filter, then second, through a 5-micron filter. That's smaller than a human blood platelet. After the second filter, it goes to a 3-port QD 'hookah' connection (for up to 3-divers). I run a 50-ft hose to my 2nd stage (don't need a 1st stage, as I am already at intermediate pressures). This setup is as safe, or safer, than SCUBA tanks, since I can hear the engine running, I know the compressor is working, and at shallow depth, I can rise without problems if there is an issue (such as a hose rupture). I can operate for 160-minutes at 20-ft easily, for the cost of 2-gallons of diesel (that powers both the dredge and the compressor). Overall...I'm guessing this set-up has saved me a couple of thousand dollars over the years, compared to paying tank fill fees at my dive shop.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Sounds like a great system. I've seen these in use in Northern California a long time ago. Keene Engineering used to make such dredges. How long can you breathe if the compressor stops, like on the tank reserve only? Alec
@skeetersaurus6249
@skeetersaurus6249 5 лет назад
Well, the tank is 30-gallons (about 120L), so depending on 'how labored I am (dredging is quite strenuous), I have anywhere from 2-5 minutes, depending...of course, if you have a 'catastrophic failure' (air hose rupture, etc) you have no more time than if your air hose on a tank ruptured, zero. But, even when NDL, if I am deeper than 10-ft (I've gone to 30-35 ft on 'face work') I'll stop at 10 for a minute or so...and if you hear that engine shut down, you stop hearing 'rocks fall back' from the end of the sluice, you stop hearing the motor, (your vacuum dredge quits vacuuming) and you know 'it's time to GO'. Yeah, Keene made them during the 'new gold rush', and still make 'sluice skiffs', but mine probably cost 1/8th what theirs did, and in my opinion, is FAR MORE featured (after all, I dive, and I know what I needed...I don't think any of theirs has built-in surface air provisions). Running the whole dredge, sluice, air ops on that one 30-hp diesel is, if I must say so, brilliant....and makes it exceptionally affordable...almost profitable! Wife says it is about as boring as 'watching grass grow' (she likes pretty water, bright coral, colored fishies...go figure).
@skeetersaurus6249
@skeetersaurus6249 5 лет назад
I don't have video of my dredge skiff (been meaning to make some, for a while now), but after you asked, I went and looked around on RU-vid for the closest thing I could find that was set up like mine (which is a larger dredge skiff). This link will show you a walk-thru of what mine is similarly set up like...except they used a Subaru car engine, and my diffuser is set up different to drop the uptake onto 'gorilla bars' first, so that large boulders come out at the headwater, to prevent 'rock damage' to the aluminum sluice walls. I'm also not a fan of this dredge's steel reservoir air tank, or their intake pipes for air, or that they don't seem to have sufficient water and contaminant filtration on their air stream....all that said, it will give you (and your viewers) an idea of the layout and how the engine drives both the suction pump and the air compressor pump. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mlNmCIOvQxY.html

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Wow! Really neat. The "new gold rush" as you call it was pretty exciting for me to watch. Dozens of manufacturers produced dredges and skiffs designed to make millions for simple scuba divers. I'm sure a few divers were pretty lucky too an did all right although I don't know any names. I think that Keene and the other "gold mining" companies made more! Thanks so much for sharing Skeeter.

I decided to look into hookah systems but really dont want to spend that much extra money as I have tons of $$$ invested in my scuba gear over the years and I have enough spare gear laying around I can make one of these tank set ups at basically no cost aside from the hookah hose and a couple fittings and that should do the job great, plus its super portable, even more so then a traditional hookah rig, winner winner chicken dinner!

I often make breathing air lines for industrial workers and in theory they sell "breathing air hose" that is guaranteed to not put possibly harmful fumes in the air, another good option is to use hose intended for high pressure potable water, its usually transparent with a white nylon mesh inside it, ALSO also, if some one wanted to do this they could probably just buy a short hose for their regulator, cut the short hose in half, and use the barbed hose fittings (the ones you used for splices) to connect more hose in between the 2 halves of the original regulator hose, that way they don't have to go find the exact fittings
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Using barbed fittings is a fine idea. The pressure is low and it does eliminate the need for special fittings. Using 'breathing air hoses' is also recommended. I have used ordinary airline hose as used in service stations for many years with no problems but again only in shallow water. Thanks Trombone. Alec

Great video, I have been diving for years on surface air. I did buy breathing air hose not sure it matters. I bought an 12volt oil less compressor and a regulator. went to the welding shop and cut the scuba fitting off the short hose coming off the regulator and spliced in a pressure washer quick disconnect. with a couple of 12v deep cycle batteries I can stay down all day. Hey Alec, loved your video. Just a question about IP. If you go down to 120’, your static water pressure is about 60#, and your IP from the surface first stage is about 140#, so your second stage down below, only gets about 80#. Do you need to adjust your second stage to 80# IP or increase your IP ( I doubt you can go that much higher) to 200#? Thanks Miguel
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
If you were diving with a tank with the 1st mounted on it the IP increases automatically as you descend. With Hookah you would need to adjust the IP depending on your depth. Alec
@WAGNLOADDOGWASTEBAGS

Alec, I REALLY enjoy your videos on Hookah. Here's my question. I have designed my own battery operated hookah system. Compressor is capable of 200 psi, oil free compressor, with only 60decibles. Air is on at 75 psi and off at 100 psi. What would your recommendation be for a GOOD second stage regulator? The regulators i have seem to draw very heavy when pressure drops below 75 psi. I think a regulator in the 50-100 psi would be ideal. Thank you in advance for your help!!
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 2 года назад
And 2nd stage will do, the cheaper the better. A sophisticated one will be harder to set. You need to adjust it to the pressure. A 2nd stage is designed to be adjusted for easy breathing at a fixed, steady input pressure. Normally the 1st stage gives air at a steady pressure, maybe 150psi, and that doesn't vary much. Yours varies by 25 psi. At 100psi it will breathe ok. At 75psi it is harder. That's perfectly normal. You should try to reduce the variation in the pressure range. Maybe make it on at 80 and off at 90. Then you will not get so great a change in the effort. The compressor will come on and off more often in this case. The other suggestion is to add an air tank into the system. Just a common auto tire filling tank (sometimes called and air pig) will do. You can get one at Harbor Freight for $40 (www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-compressors-tanks/portable-air-tanks/5-gallon-portable-air-tank-65594.html). They are usually rated to 125 psi max. Adding that will flatten out the pressure a bit to the regulator. Just have the compressor line run to the tank and have another hose run from the tank to the reg. Just use a TEE fitting. Do both of these things and you'll find a big difference. See my video on adjusting the 2nd stage ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wkU2OB_fkVg.html . Good luck. Alec

Do not use just any tool-hose, there is a good chance it will off-gas toluene especially if in the sun. Breathing air hose, medical O2, or better still Diver's Hose ( non-kinking ) is essential.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Yep. Always better. But, ordinary air-line tubing will work OK for this purpose in shallow water - a pool or cleaning boats for example. The pressure is 110psi so there's no danger of a breakdown. I know you stated these are typically used in shallow water, so maybe this is generally negligible, but if your first stage adds a constant pressure to the ambient pressure in it's diaphragm as the intermediate pressure and the first stage is at the surface in 1 atm of pressure, will it still supply the correct air pressure to support normal breathing underwater?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
That is what your air supply has to provide: an IP of 135 to 150 psi PLUS the ambient pressure at depth. Some hookah's can meet this demand but smaller/cheaper units cannot. When in doubt, use a scuba tank to be sure. Thanks Robert for the comment.

Dear Alec, is it possible to know a safe and good way to create an array on 4 scuba tanks for an air supply ? The video is very clear about what you need if you use only one tank but, if i need to connect more tanks in series how can i do that ? There is some kind high pressure adapter that accept multiple air intake ? Is it possible? I really see only pair of tanks linked toghether but i really do not know how to create an array of tanks. Hope to read you soon ! Great videos always ! Thanks a lot !

If you want to have a stationary supply, that is, one that sits on land, it's quite easy. Each tank has a valve and each valve has a Tee fitting (except the first one). Now you can run an HP hose from one valve to the next. If you want to carry it underwater, it gets more complicated since the tanks must be secure first. That is, they cannot move relative to each other. So you need a large pack with solid bands to hold the tanks. Then you need a manifold to connect the tanks to each other. It's not difficult but takes time and some material. Alec

Hi Alec...another great video. I'm currently putting one of these together but as you know our UK waters are pretty cold most of the year so I'm thinking of splitting the air line to accommodate a dry suit inflation hose as well as the regulator. I think you can buy air hose splitters but do you have any thoughts or tips about this. By the way I'm simply floating my 15L tank around on a rubber ring rather than messing about with compressors. Cheers...Tim

A scuba compressor filter should take out all of the oil, and other impurities including noxious gases, oil or oil-free design. Most large compressors are regular oil type but the air is well-filtered. Breathing air with oil in it can cause lipoid pneumonia. It sounds as though that's what you had and it can be very serious with long-lasting problems. Take care. Alec

Hi Alec. Quick question. If 1st stage is on the surface and you go 100ft deep (as you mentioned in video) - does it affect you breathing, since 1st stage does not sense the water pressure. 🤔🤔 and if it does - how ?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 4 года назад
You can't do that. That's why most hookah setups are for shallow diving only. As the 2nd stage goes deeper, the IP must increase. For advanced surface supply, the tenders do that automatically or the diver may have some control at his hose valve. Theoretically, if a diver with a properly setup regulator dove with the 2nd stage only (the 1st stays on the surface) he would not get any air when he reached 330' (10 atmospheres). Of course he would never get there because the air would get harder and harder to access all the way down. I have a video coming that explains how a regulator adjusts the air pressure, the IP, as you descend. It's really very simple. Alec
@YesWeCampFPS
@YesWeCampFPS 5 лет назад
Excellent and instructive video as usual, Alec. One question. I see you're not including a non-return valve in this setup. Is it because that is not needed in a scuba-style mouth-held regulator which doesn't seal the diver's head/face (as opposed to full face masks or diving helmets), and/or because the second stage demand valve works as its own check valve? In the latter case, would either downstream and upstream designs work to that purpose? Thank you and I'm looking forward to your next video.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
Interesting question. A non-return valve is used in surface supply in case the air supply fails such as when the compressor stops. In that case the water pressure on the 2nd stage at depth would theoretically force water up the hose and into the air supply source at the surface. That's not a concern for a modern 2nd stage since they are all downstream valves and would automatically stop any air or water movement into the hose. If you were using some form of upstream valve such as a tilt valve, that's not the case and you'd need a non-return valve. Quite frankly, air or water being forced up the hose to the surface is not the biggest concern. The diver has no air would be on the top of my mind!! That's the reason why a Hookah rig is often used with a scuba tank. The divers still wears a tank but has a Hookah air line running to the regulator. This presumes the regulator accepts a Hookah line while mounted on a tank such as with a 2 hose late model Aquamaster. Otherwise the diver would have the Hookah reg in his mouth and the scuba tank reg acting as a safe second but for his own use. I hope that makes sense Take care. Alec

Hi Alex, I really like you videos but I need to comment on this one. My experience as a mechanic using Harbor Freight air hoses is that #1 they smell bad, #2 I have had them deteriorate internally and allow particles of material to flow down stream into pneumatic tools. An air filter designed for garage type compressors should take out the particles but they would not filter out the taste or smell. As a Scuba instructor, I personally would only use a dedicated scuba hose, and a scuba tank for the air source.

Any compressor that supplies 100 psi or so will do. BUT, you do need to get the cleanest air you can. Oilless is good but not perfect. They may be oilless but they can still produce noxious gases. A proper breathing air filter is really needed. However, and I'm NOT recommending this, you can survive for short periods and shallow depths on almost anything. If using brass fittings, the most common, there is no problem. Remember most of the inside of a 1st stage is brass. For the hose, use one labeled for air/breathing as that is where you would likely get more undesirable particles. Read through this videos comments for some more info.

OK Terrance. A couple of suggestions; 1. If you take the 1st and 2nd stage and hose into any decent hardware store, maybe even Home Depot or something similar, they may be able to match up the threads. 2. If you can find a compressor supply outlet they can do the same. 3. Any dive store can get these items so maybe one will order it in and mail it to you. Give them the Trident numbers. 4. You may be able to get them on eBay or Amazon. 5. Contact Scuba Tools (scubatools.com). They have the fitting for the 1st stage (#20-161-105) and can certainly get the other one for you. Nice video again. Thanks! One thing that confuses me: how about the ambient pressure? As far as I understand, the first stage senses the ambient pressure and adjusts the intermediate pressure accordingly. So, the 1st stage provides a surface + 10 bar pressure, but it is different than bottom + 10 bar pressure. If this is the case, I understand that the difference could be ineffective if the diver is not too deep. What would you do with a hookah if the diver is so deep that the intermediate pressure difference is effective? Maybe adjust the first stage's intermediate pressure?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
You're quite right and that's the reason this type of set-up is used mainly by shallow water divers - dock workers, pool guys, pond installers, etc. At less that 20' it isn't problem. Deeper than that and air volume becomes an issue. For a deep dive one would have to increase the IP and re-adjust the 2nd. It's not quite as radical as you may think. The IP increases by roughly 15 psi (1 BAR) for every 30' that you descend so if at 35' the IP would be 165 psi (11 BAR) instead of 150 psi (10 BAR) and so on. Eventually a diver could be so deep that a standard regulator won't do the job. At 132' for example, the IP should be 210 psi (14 BAR). It would be hard to set the 2nd stage properly with that IP. I think my math is right. It isn't perfect but it works. Take care. Alec

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Even on Hookah you are breathing air under pressure. Excess nitrogen goes into your body so the same DSC rules apply. If you limit the hose length to 25'. you cannot go deeper than 30' so can stay down for hours with no problem. The bigger danger is that in less than 10' you can suffer a deadly embolism. Even in a swimming pool, if you shoot to the surface while holding your breath, it can be very serious. Every time I see kids playing with a surface supply or Hookah system I shudder. If the air flow stops, what will they do? Hold their breath and surface. It's a nasty way to die. Take care. Alec

If you mean to supply hookah diver(s) directly from a compressor? That is a complex formula that above what I could provide in a comment. Best action is to calculate the max number of divers, max depth, SAC rate, and visit a reliable vendor like Bauer to get their ideas. Remember safety first before cost, otherwise just put on a scuba tank.

@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 2 года назад
Hmm. I'm not clear on what you're asking. The upper hose to the 2nd stage must be attached to a normal regulator 1st stage. That ensures the pressure to the 2nd is 150psi - not 3000! Quite frankly, the quickest and easiest way to make this type of surface supply is to cut the regulator hose in the middle. Then using brass ferrules (tapered brass inserts) and hose clamps, attach your airline hose onto the cut reg hose. No adapters are needed for this setup. I hope this helps. Alec

Mr. Peirce , can you recommend a 12 volt air compressor that is best for a hookah system for two people to the depth of 40 foot or less, and can a regular second stage regulator be used for this purpose.. thank you Dan
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
First remember the air flow you need is between 135-150 psi intermediate pressure to the 2nd stage, times 2 divers, times 40 feet deep (over double the SAC), is a LOT of output PSI from a 12V to be safe. Discuss your needs with other experts on www.scubaboard.com who may provide a better solution or just fill up scuba tanks from the compressor. Dive safe Daniel

Be sure it is a oil less compressor, preferably with a diaphragm. Place a reserve tank between compressor and hose connector in the event you are 30 feet down and compressor quits. You still can surface safely instead of no air at all. Keene Engineering sells plastic reserve tanks.

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter I thought, 1- diver, for shallow water diving (10-15 ft) Flow was more important than pressure. I am considering a 12V pump that delivers 120L/min @ 10-14 psi. connected to a small accumulation tank, such as a 5 lb, used CO2 fire extinguisher. A sensitive 12v pressure differential switch, which cycles the pump motor on and off, by demand, keeping it running cooler, as/per duty cycle. Any thoughts on this... Thanks guys!

Hi Alec, greetings from Norway.. Been of course watching all your videos.. I always thought hoses for scuba had to be approved for breathing gasses in the same sense compressors need to be approved once a year.. Hoses are hoses. Far as I've ever known scuba regulator hoses are not special in terms of carrying breathing air. They just meet pressure specifications and are new material. They all used to be rubber - rubber inner lining, nylon braids for strength and rubber outer cover. Rubber is nothing special in respect of breathing air. Good to hear from you Tom. Alec

Question, I am an recreational divers and where I live the closest dive shop has closed there doors for good, due to this has put me as a diver in a pocket full of hurt, been doing some research and I don't dive over 100 feet deep, and got this idea to try and build my own tank fill station, that being said the air we are breathing in from what I understand is just compressed filtered air, but are the compressors oil less or does it matter as long as it's filtered properly? Make it short thinking of buying an oil less compressor and proper filters so that I can fill my own tanks, please message me and she'd some light on this question I have. Nearest scuba fill shop now is 150 miles away, puts a good damper on diving now. Thanks. Chris.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
I'll do a video on compressors and filter systems soon Chris. Most scuba compressors are oil based. It's hard to find an oilless compressor that will pump to the high pressures needed for scuba. A decent filter system removes any impurities from the use of oil. You can get a personal use compressor that would meet your needs. The cost would be in the $5000 range for a decent one set up and ready to go. It is NOT a commercially rated compressor and cannot be run continuously but it will fill several tanks before needing to stop and cool. Look at the Max Air 35. It is available under several brand names. Sorry about your dive store. All divers need to support their local store as much as they can or face the same problem. Good luck. Alec

A sore throat is NOT a good indicator. Without a 1st stage, you must be using a compressor of some sort to supply air. You need to check the air to be sure it's clean. There may be oil from the compressor, particles in the air or maybe it's just extra dry and your throat is getting dried out. Tell me what the source of the air is and I might be able to give you a suggestion. Alec

hi Alec. interesting "backyard" hookah scuba hookup. My only concern is that as the hookah systems seem to promote "no license necessary" it could put people in a dangerous position. A good thing about the scuba courses is that half of it deals with emergency situations and how to deal with them. I also don't like the idea of no safe second or pressure gauge. anyone who wants to try this should be careful about using just any old compressor because they can produce carbon monoxide with the breakdown of the oil (filters won't help with this ) Most compressors have a warning not for breathing. If you are using tanks on the surface then you will have to be certified to get them filled (not at the gas station!). one other thing NPT is actually National Pipe Taper ,tapered threads for use with pipe sealant or tape as opposed to NPS National Pipe Straight these usually have an "O" ring to seal like the scuba 1/8" NPS fitting.Regarding another comment about off gasses from the non food grade hoses this is generally only a concern for liquids like potable (drinking) water or liquid foods in hoses.thanks Owen m
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
All good points Owen. I always appreciate your input. Most low pressure air hoses as found in garages and for air tools are NPT. One should use Teflon tape (not pipe sealant) if used for breathing air. Alec

Well, I've been PADI since 1989 and predominantly dive on surface air ('hookah') in my hobby work. That said, many of your presumptions are wrong - though safety IS CRITICAL and you can't under-value PADI or NAUI or whatever professional school you prefer. Again, I've been PADI for almost 30-years... THAT SAID...you can fill a scuba tank with a modern high-compression paintball set-up, and most have videos of it on their RU-vid channel. Right now, coming out of Asia are a bunch of cheap, crappy compressors that promise an 80L fill in less than 4-hours. And, all the 'rednecks' you fear of using a hookah without training are, in fact, using it (and have been for decades anyhow)...keep in mind, before it was 'engineered correctly', some fool tinkered with it personally at a VERY hazardous level. There are PERPETUAL horror stories of sponge and fish divers in the Philippines dying of various 'compressor-related' deaths (such as open-breathing low-pressure air without 2nd stage at ALL) almost daily. I am NOT excusing them at all for their deadly follies...what I AM addressing is the fact that here I am, a certified diver, and this topic interests me because I DO IT FREQUENTLY, and you don't want anyone to speak on it because 'they might do something foolish' if they know. It IS a legitimate form of diving! As many have said, there are NO LEGAL REPERCUSSIONS from 'diving without a license' - a certification just gets used as a 'check point' to control diving via air-tank-fills, yet if a rich guy drops $3,500 on a tank compressor, the compressor companies will direct-sell him a compressor, no dive organization knows about it, and he dives...so it becomes a 'rich-vs-poor' checkpoint, not a 'skills-vs-no skills' checkpoint. FYI, actually doing 'hookah' diving correctly IS EXPENSIVE! I've got THOUSANDS in my rig (more than a good compressor costs) AND I am PADI...but if I couldn't exchange ideas with people, I would NEVER have thought of some of the designs I ended up implementing, either. Exchange of ideas gave us dive tables, respirators and BCDs..think of what we wouldn't have, if we didn't communicate?

There are some devices designed to help keep your mouth moist but they have never proven to be much help and some have actually caused problems with the reg.
