What tool do you use to get your values right? Do you think this one would be helpful?

This is a very helpful tool. Sometimes I also turn my reference photo into a three- or four-value black and white photo to determine darkest darks and lightest lights. Thank you!

I’ve actually never used anything to check my values. For 10 years now I’ve been a beginner with watercolors. I hated them for the longest time but really wanted to pursue improvement. I will definitely try this out. It’s a wonderful idea. I love the subject and colors your painting. I will give this painting a go. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I love how you did the background it looks like light is filtering thru and softened the entire painting. I’m just starting watercolor but I’m going to try this. I found I like sketching with watercolor pencils so the lines disappear. I don’t know if I can get anywhere close to yours but I was able to sketch it pretty close which I was proud of because drawing is never a skill I thought I had. I am a self taught acrylic painter and water color is so much harder but I love it. Thanks for this from a serious newbie!!

I just discovered you channel and love how you teach. I usually shy away from videos where sections are sped up - I'd rather watch "real time" painting. Real time doesn't break the relaxation vibe of the video. And as a beginner, the repetition of what your are doing is very helpful. Could you include more real time in your videos? I look forward to viewing and painting some of your previous videos.
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040 9 месяцев назад
Thank you so much. Before I had sped up parts, I was just cutting chunks of the video out. Unfortunately people just don’t seem to watch 1-3 hour videos. I may do a live one at some point and then it would be in real time.

This is great tool! 👍 You asked about tools we use. I use several, but one that has been helpful in studio when working from photos has been using my photo software to open an image, next create a white border or whatever base color I am painting against and then use the select color tool to grab the color in the photo and paint it onto that border. I am able to get my lightest to darkest range, but I can also change the image into black and white to look at values. I had to learn what looks like a different color is the same color that looks different because of what other color it is next to. For those needing sketch help, it can even do a line image from it to simplify the sketching process. I can also take or put my image into my amoled tablet because it gives it a warmer color screen. Really good for when I want to pick between warm or cool palettes. (I am so old school, I used to have to select if I used Fuji or Kodak gold 35mm film to get these warm or cool palettes in my photo outcomes). Times have really changed and so have immediate results!

You don’t sound old school to me. It seems you have this down to a science. Thank you. I will try to figure out how to select colors. I’m not too techy.

New subscriber here. So for the 3d effect , one has to dip the stencil brush in to color and brush it on the paper?
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040 9 месяцев назад
Welcome! The stencil brush is used with clear water that removes some of the paint. Occasionally, but not often, I will dip it in a bit of paint. Here is another video that plains bokeh effect a bit more. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--P6mO0jiMXM.html

Thank you so much. The palette is called a Premium Palette. It was designed by a watercolor artist. Just google it. Each well holds a whole tube of paint which is rather amazing. If you order from her, would you please tell her I told you about it. I am trying to set up an affiliate with her so we can both help each other.

In the UK these are called chineese lanterns, I prefer what you called them. Could you laminate the cards then punch the hole out? Beautiful looks like you can pick them up
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040 9 месяцев назад
Thank you. I don’t remember what I called it but I thought it was a Japanese lantern. I just looked it up and see that it can be called either one. I’m not sure you could laminate something on rough watercolor paper. I think it would leave some air, but I’m not an expert on laminating.

@@captaindrywallWrong advice. Copying the color with a "color checker", which is what the square piece of paper with a square hole is, does not make your painting "3D". Correct drawing, control of edges and correct color value is what makes your artwork "3D". Try again. :D
