This is a really cool LED Project for you! Subscribe for more!
Here's a link for calculating your required resistor ledcalc.com
Note: Diodes usually drop about 0.6v, so you should also take this into account. i.e. instead of calculating for a 2v drop, perhaps calculate for a 1.4v drop across the resistor.

I have a question, why do you need a diode in series with an LED, the LED is already a diode itself anyway and the peak voltages are small. You mentioned that the voltage commutation could damage the LED. Why is this??

because it an AC power supply and the power supply will alter now and then resulting in burst of LED.....the diode will prevent the current from going through the other way as it will allow current in one side only

@@alwindeandrews4146 but LED is actually a diode with a certain reverse breakdown voltage. If applied voltage doesn't exceed that, it can basically work as typical (poor, but still) diode too, because reverse biased LED stops current as well. Ok, it has a high current leakage, but in this case it doesn't matter, because LED won't glow when reverse biased. A single LED in series with a proper resistor would be enough here (for such voltage peaks). If the peaks were a lot higher you could in fact slam a higher resistor in, but the power loss would be huge and not worth it.

theoretically you could do this on a large scale using one of the amp outputs, maybe powering a wall of LEDs behind a television, and an OP amp can always be used to boost the signal!

Yes, this would be pretty cool. Could probably get away with rectifying the output and using a Logic Level MOSFET to switch the supply to the wall of LEDs.

pretty awesome, now I only need ot buy a subwoofer to try it out :P

Thanks, if you have any desktop speakers or something similar. you can do this by adding the leds to the bass speaker.

Simply Electronics Cool, I'll see if I can do that.

What if i had a row of leds in a line and i wanted more to light up the louder the sound was. So it looks like a studio monitor? How could i make that?
