Nice review! As a Beambox Pro home user, also a Technology teacher, I truly love laser cutting and engraving. Our school started with 3D Printing last year and I learnt a bit of laser cutting during remote teaching and lockdown. Now my school has a Beambox Pro and I own one at home so I can experiment with different techniques and materials. In terms of the laser cutting, I think power/speed control is very important, speed is not the only concern for a laser project: longevity of laser tube (I assume we all use glass CO2 tube) can be a trade-off if you decide to use high power most of the time. You are not gonna get 8K hours on 80%+ power. For me, I don't mind the slower speed and I usually run the laser around 25%-30% of the full power. You might want to run a one-off laser engraving and cutting test pattern each time you get a new material - they provide you different gradients of darkness and reference on the depth of cut for a given material. For school, Makeblock, glowforge, or Beambox/beamo can be suitable candidates but I must stress out that safety is the most important factor to use in the classroom. The camera feature comes second. Students don't have time and patience to align the object so a camera is a must have. I think the upgrade path after these kinds of devices would be RF laser tube from Epilog with some addon - they are not cheap but the laser tube and build durability should be a lot better. Happy laser cutting/engraving everyone!

I used to teach laser cutting (and other tools) at Techshop in SF when it first opened. They are great to have access to. Looking forward to seeing more of what you do with it. I haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but in case you don't mention it, one of the most important things to keep in mind is never to put vinyl or many other items that are toxic when burnt by the laser. Vinyl also will rust out and ruin the machine very quickly. Now back to the rest of the video.

Here's a fun fact for you, since the engraved denim blew your mind: You might have already owned or seen some without realizing it. Many Jeans factories will use lasers to pre-distress jeans. Less mess, less fuss, less machinery than using traditional methods, and you can do anything from precise patterns, to simple wear marks, with different degrees of psuedo-wear.

On a glowforge I've been using, the camera alignment is great in the middle, and a bit off in the corners. When doing any camera work (using scraps to cut new things, scanning drawings,) i've been just trying to keep it close to the center as much as possible. :) One thing I didn't think of before lasering (Pew pew!) was that the harmful fumes from some plastics aren't necessarily harmful to just us humans... they can also leave residues, ash, smoke, etc on the lenses, which decreases performance, but also could absorb some of the laser energy, damaging the lenses.

Those 'quirks' are simply unacceptable for a machine of this price. Especially that white lid that had it's plastic basically disintegrate, dropping screw after screw onto the work area. Even with the machine being second hand, that is just unacceptable. The reason you got more accuracy with cloth is because the math of making a fisheye camera look flat makes a huge difference by the distance from the camera. I work with a Glowforge which may be a bit more extreme on the point, but without an accurate height setting what you see in alignment of image to material is useless but with it I get sub-millimeter errors at worst. As long as rotation is accurate I have even flipped an image and come back on the backside where a cut did not make it through. Also by making the design bilaterally symmetrical I can flip it in the hole in the material and engrave it on both sides.

Lightburn with a webcam will do similar functionality. Mix that with a K40 you get similar functionality with well tested inexpensive software for 1/4th the price of a complete proprietary out of the box solution. Not as pretty enclosure but gets the job done and sometimes more options like auto focus.

Do you have any other recs? My mother loves her cricut and has been drooling over a glowforge but I refuse to buy something you can’t use offline and I want her to try something more affordable first. I need something user friendly for her, but I don’t mind a learning curve and tinkering so long as she never has to do any of it. If I can just let her set the settings and run cuts, we’re good. She’s almost better with technology than I am and loves to test and zero in settings and stuff, so I think she can handle something a bit less polished… but when it comes to multiple programs, errors, deep settings and more important stuff, she freezes up. I’ll do that stuff if need be. You’re the first person I’ve seen who has a decent idea of how to run a cheaper setup. I’d really appreciate the help… I literally just missed her birthday because I was planning to buy her an Ender 3S1 with the added Laser, but you can’t run the laser and printer, you have to manually swap the heads out and physically re-zero and level everything… it’s a hassle if you want to print AND laser engrave with any frequency. I really thought it was a slam dunk, but she opted out. So I have no gift for her… haha Your help would be greatly appreciated!

@@DanteYewToob The market is to me sort of a mess, I feel your pain. Both inexpensive and expensive have a cost. Like in 3D printers inexpensive is of the "bairly enough" functionality with potential to a tinkerer. Often inexpensive does not do the job the brochure says without modification. Expencive is what it is with no real expansion in many cases but does the job as the brochure says but nothing else. Glowforge has done a good job from what I hear at the non-tinkerer market but you pay a premium for that. K40's are popular likely due to the price but they are "just enough" tech. My understanding is to make a K40 a better machine and add 3rd party better software like Lightburn you need to change its controller. Not a tough job but it is a job. There is piles of online info on this type of upgrade. Controllers are where the hair pulling begins! Controllers are designed for a purpose and the tinkerer world tries to make them into something they are not designed for because there may be potential. Somewhat like a Multi-tool, gets you out of a bind but you would pull your hair out if you had to use that screwdriver for much other than an emergency. Basically a tool that does many things bairly good enough and nothing excellent. 3D printers/CNC Routers/Lasers are 3 different beasts with 3 different needs for computational functionality and motion functionality. I'm not personally convinced a 3D printer controller is powerful enough to be both the computational and motion functionality for them. They work for 3D printers which is a very small subset of gcode in a more 2D use with special issues for flow control at historical printer speeds of 100mm/s. CO2 lasers often run at 1000mm/s and potentially has to pulse the laser 1200+ times/sec. I often fall back to traditional ways, why beat my head against the wall reinventing a wheel. Large CNC machines have been doing this for 40+ years, 3D printers for only 10+ years with focus on affordability often sacrificing functionality when used for other functions. Traditionally a CNC machine is a motion controller that takes care of timing of motors and a processor that takes care of conversion of gcode to motion commands. The Klipper project on that point has it right I think. They proved the controller can run orders of magnitude faster if its not doing the gcode conversion and all the math. Sadly Klipper is for 3D printing only so far but has potential to do laser and routers. Klipper could run 3 completely different modules for each specialized function where a 3D controller or GRBL controller has very limited memory and can't do that so well. Maybe future! The way I see it is trying to get a very limited processor on a 3D printer board to do complex calculations of gcode conversion mixed with motor/laser timing is very similar to trying to get your toaster to open/run your complicated Excel spreadsheet. Its just not capable! But it is cheaper! You could make it work! The question is why? I recently tried the re-invent the wheel strategy! I built 4 machines and wanted functionality that was not available in out of the box controllers. The machines are 700W 6' x 12' CO2 laser, 2 - 180W 5' x 12' lasers and 1 7' x 14' cnc router. After a pile of time with stagnant grbl32 projects and a multitude of controller boards (mostly 3D printer boards), about 2 years in time and effort. I found that auto squared gantry on the lasers mixed with full abilities of all laser features was not going to happen and I used Ruida controllers. GRBL worked ok after I finally got a working version compiled but a huge lack of documentation and support and I ran into a problem with jagged circles. I said Bub-bye grbl. The large CNC router is running a FPGA board for motion control and Linux CNC as a gcode processor. To answer your question, I have no experience with K40's as I just built my own but with what I read they are ok with poor controllers and adequate motion components. Putting a rudia controller on a K40 should be the inexpensive ticket! I can not speak for the motion components of the K40 and their accuracy but they would be fairly cheap to replace later once the existing wore out. With the Ruida controller you can get Lightburn and add a webcam to the K40 and I think you off to the races but with some startup tinkering. You might be able to convince a Chinese manufacturer to put the supported Ruida controller in for you if your not comfortable with that. I'm personally not convinced of the diode laser path, I did some tinkering there also. One of the large tables was built with a diode laser to cut corplast (corrugated plastic). Ya that ended abruptly. I read that diode lasers power drops off over time but did not know the extent until this test. On small projects you wouldn't notice really, just over time increase the power setting and not know why. A note on Ruida, I am not really sure whats in the box! I don't know if the file sent to it is "pre" processed to offload its processor or if its gcode like. I'm sure it breaks some of the thoughts above but it works out of the box and has current support. It also seems that many people are happy with them after the conversions.

Nice that it works out of the box, but what a price. I can do almost everything this does on a laser that costs around a tenth of this. With various upgrades, like cooling, air assist, a camera, better software and controller, I can match the abilities of this laser cutter and still be spending around a quarter of this price. I see nothing here, apart from it's far superior looks, that would inspire me to spend so much. If I was a school, this would probably be a better option, if I was an etsy type producer it offers little.

I get better shadowing results from my $200 desktop laser. I'm impressed at some of the cutting but the fact that they shipped you a machine that could not do everything it promised is disappointing for $3,500. I'm actually in the market right now to buy a cutting laser or an SLS printer but I've seen the prices go up higher in the quality drop. I'm at a loss to which way to go. This definitely was disheartening for this product for me. I have created some amazing artwork and personal wood carvings with an neje laser. I would however be interested to see how it fuses corundum! My laser isn't quite strong enough to create a bead like I can with a torch. It might be a cool experiment because no one has tried it yet.

I could even run the machine "open and disabled" such that it would emit a low intensity laser pointer type red dot and you could run the just the cut or engrave lines to see if the output lines up to expectations.

I recently purchased this machine with the smoke filter machine and boy does it smell!! I was very disappointed with the smoke purifier. How do you vent for this machine?

Combine the 3D print and the woodcut, you can print a frame to hold the veneers. You're welcome.

1:55 nope 405nm its violet not uv, but it gets the name uv in the 3D industry (for marketing purposes or sth) and yes, violet and IR light do have different properties, but not so much when it comes to burning

Devin, I really thought given your background, I'd see more paper cutting. Intricate designs. and possibly stacking the intricate designs to create 3d-ish intricate art.

For the size would got to a generic Chinese laser 50w with lightburn so much more performance. yes needs checking for safety but totally worth it. under $1500

Are you talking about Zimbabwe dollars? I'll go with just a 40 Watt Laser module and do a _big size_ cutter on my own.
