Locking Wingnuts, better than plain locknuts.

Yea something about it just being a friction fit just doesn't seem right. I would have just made it a swivel point and a second hole where you inserted a bolt with the wing nut to lock it in place, no slots at all. Of course I have never built one of these. :)

Never use pliers to tighten nuts, always use a wrench. Cut the wire with a wirecutter, not a pair of scissors.

God I wish that I had the money to build one of these, they are so cool.

Tip: Some ESCs come with male bullet connectors on the input side. Don't cut those off and solder the wires, rather, crimp or solder a female connector on the wire and connect that way. It'll cost you a few cents more, but it'll be a nicer connection and you can more easily replace a broken ESC (or transfer it to another project) if needed. Don't forget to apply heat shrink to cover over the entire female body connector or you may have a short circuit. Tip: If your ESC comes with bare wire on the input side, it's still a good idea to solder a bullet connector on both sides rather than hard soldering the wires. Tip: Soldering stranded wires together is a cheap solution, but it's not ideal. The soldering makes the wire hard and it can break, Using a wire crimper is better. In this case a butt connector would be the thing to pick. A crimping tool and a set of various connectors is going to set you back a bit, but it's a worthwhile investment if you do a lot of electricity work. Some crimp connectors have a a built in heat shrink sleave to tighten off the end and make it waterproof. This is true tor all sizes stranded wires, if you can, avoid soldering and use fixed crimped connections or use removable connectors (with the wire crimped in, not soldered).

I would recommand larger booms most of the watchers are biginners and larger booms makes it more stable

Note that from 7:10 all through to 12:05 the video shows the bottom plate with the brackets and nuts on the outside and the bolts on the inside. At 12:05 This is specifically corrected (although not mentioned it was the other way around in the video before).

hi, which one of this flight controllers are you going to use for this project? (I'm buying the parts and I would like to have the same one to avoid confusion since is my first project, I'm only listing the ones you recommend on the "maker hangar tricopter kit" site) Flip 1.5 Ardupilot (Tutorial) OpenPilot (Tutorial) KK2 (Tutorial)

Still waiting for the laser files. :D buying the kit is costly for someone from Scotland!

true. We need star trek type transporters to beam stuff we order around the globe rather than have parcel delivery. You'll prob pay more on shipping, customs fees and taxes than on the kit. If you haven't received the invoice from the customs yet,.. expect it :)

Doesn't locking the front arms totally defeat the entire point? I thought they we're supposed to be able to move back if the copter hits something so that the arm doesn't take any of the force from crashing.
@chartle1
@chartle1 10 лет назад
My understanding is that they are for storage. If it was loose enough to move during a crash they would probably move during flight.
@oreubens
@oreubens 10 лет назад
Somehow I doubt you can make 'folding arms that are rigid enough to handle the stresses of flight and at the same time flexible enough to fold back when something is hit. And even if something is hit, it's probably better to have a broken arm than have the arm flex inside and the body taking all the damage.

oreubens there are vids of this. I've seen then. I am not (yet) a tricopter owner so I can only comment on what I've seen others do and their successes.
@oreubens
@oreubens 10 лет назад
Will Lewis Maybe, But if you crash, "something" is going to have to absorb the hit... I'd rather break an arm of than a more expensive part of the body. Besides, it's only a stick of wood. This particular tricopter is made to be cheap to replace the body parts.
@RICTOR464
@RICTOR464 10 лет назад
The arms are rigid enough to stay open in flight you don't have to lock the arms down to fly, the whole point of the folding arms are for easy storage and to absorb the impact when crashing so nothing breaks, and when you lock down the arm the body of the quad copter is more likely to break then the arm.
